Not sure, but it's hard to come first.
I think coming first consists of coming the closest to the "Average speed" for the whole event as dictated by the organisers, while still making it to all the "events" that are made known to you as you get your time sheet stamped at the start of each stage.
If you do it too fast, you lose, too slow and you lose. Miss too many events and you lose. Generally the average speed, while almost "doable" while keeping to the speed limit is only achieveable if you don't go to any of the events. Which means you lose. Well that's my understanding of it anyway.
Soooooooo... if you want to do it, do it for fun, not for the prize money
