The Black Pearl - My R33 S1 Build
MC-WOSHY replied to MC-WOSHY's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
Oh, i forgot something! I have always wanted gauges in my car also, but never wanted it to look tacky or too illegal as cops are pretty strict here in WA. Lucky I have done the right thing and have permits for everything on my car and it's all legal After a lot of research and searching I found out about a dash gauge holder that was moulded specifically for the R33. But the information I was reading was from a site a couple years ago and these things were now discontinued But I was determined, so after 3 days of constant searching and looking up info I managed to find it! I found it on a website called perfectrun.jp and the gauge holder was made by a company called "Border". So here it is, I'm happy with the way if fits and now just have to buy some 60mm Defi gauges to go in them (Thinking of going the "Racer Series") -

So, the reason I bought this car is a bit cliche.. Ever since I saw Paul Walker's 34 I vowed that I must have a Skyline! and so I did. At the time I was at the video shop and 3 years ago 34's were a lot more expensive and so I saw the beauty in this R33 (Not everyone can) and the potential it had being stock! So I decided I would buy this R33 and make it one of the cleanest 33's in Perth, as a lot of people do ruin them these days, Apart from making this one of the cleanest 33's, my goal is to make it the full package! I'm talking engine-wise, exterior, interior, suspension etc.. Once I'm done this car will be complete in every aspect! Next on the list is (In order): Maintenance - New Diff Gasket + Diff Oil Change, New Drive Belts Installed, New Lower Control Arms + Nolathane Bushes, then Tune Looks - Roof Spoiler, R33 S2 Rear Seats (To Match The Front) & Hydro-Dip Dash Suspension - STD (Standard) Coilovers (Finally!), Front and Rear SRI Strut Bars (From JustJap) & Front and Rear Whiteline Sway Bars + Links Thanks for reading this far guys and girls, I hope you have enjoyed it -

So this brings us to today, this build thread is now up to date! I hope you have all enjoyed the read thus far. I will still be constantly updating as things happen This might be a bit late, but I realized I never really gave you the specs of the car initially. So here they are: The car is a 1994 Nissan Skyline S1 R33 (Duh ) When I first bought it, it had only 138xxx on the clock (Great for a 94 car!) and now it has 161,000 (Exactly ) on it, which is still pretty good IMHO considering I have had this car for 3 years and used it on my L's, Red P's, Green P's and Full License and not to mention it has been my daily driver! It is factory Turbo and Manual It is an imported Skyline, not Aus delivered and I am the 3rd owner in Australia In the next post I will discuss where I am going next and my overall goal for the car -

Before the tune date, I think I am going to take my car into Evolution R to get a compression test carried out just in case Wish me luck! -

After this my car decided that in the 3 years of ownership it finally wanted to cause me some grief! When I bought this car it was mechanically A1 and never had any issues up until now, which is good I guess Anyways, about 2 weeks ago my car started missfiring.. It was only on idle and not under any boost though, so I figured it wasn't anything serious! So as one of my best friends is a mechanic, we checked the car over. We checked: TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) CAS (Crank Angle Sensor) Swapped out my coil packs for a whole new set of others Changed all my spark plugs for new ones and changed AFM It was still missing! So I took it to a place called EFI, which was a fuel and injection specialist and $170 later they had said all the tests the had done indicated the AFM was out of calibration So I thought maybe the other AFM I bought was bust.. I then replaced it again but it was still slightly missing So I said f**k it, $280 later (Discounts ftw ) I bought a brand new Z32 AFM from Bosch So now I await my tune date with PZP on the 15th of May -

So after some thought I decided to replace my front seats Partly because the drivers side had a hole in it, as do all S1 GTST seats -.- So as I didn't want to go After-Market just yet I went for the direct replacement, S2 seats So out with the old and in with the new! -

After this I decided to get some tint applied to help keep cool and also to make it look a bit better So I went with darkest legal all round Was done by a mobile tinter called "Platinum Window Tinting", if you are in WA, I would highly recommend him! As for the tint, it's the same deal as the tail lights, looks way better in person Top: Is Before Bottom: Is After -

So after I received the message I was super keen to go put the kit on! Unfortunately we only got as far as lining the front bar up as it started to rain -.- So we did the front bar and left it for the day. We finally got to putting the rest of the kit on and here's how she stands now Finally I was happy with the way she looked! Sorta Ps, instead of drilling into my new bumper I bought 4 "Earth" Magnets, which are super strong industrial magnets, and attached two to my license plate and two behind the bumper and it works a treat! Been on the freeway etc and it hasn't even budged, it's been 3 months too. Will be buying a license plate relocate kit though as I don't want my custom plates stolen. -

So after letting my front bar collect dust, I decided to get it fixed up and cut! I put it in the hand's of a panel beater called "John" and boy did he do a great job, not only did he cut the middle part out for me, he even went the extra mile and fibre-glassed the cut bits up so it looks like the hole is actually meant to be there and not just cut out! If you looked at it you really wouldn't be able to tell it was cut, which was great! Then it was all off to be painted, it made my day when I received this picture message from my painter -

I'm glad you are enjoying it! I'll keep it coming Although I am almost up to the current date haha. Yeah, I don't like dressing up my car to be something it's not, otherwise I'd buy a GTR! Yeah, some of them came without the rear wiper and just solid glass, mine wasn't that one sadly. Yeah, the tail lights were super cool! + I was sick of the condensation in the indicator part when I washed them -.- -

After this, I decided the last few pieces I needed to fix the cosmetics were coilovers (Will be buying soon) and a new kit as the S1 just wasn't aggressive enough! I didn't want to go to ricer and was going to keep The Black Pearl looking clean So I found the M-Spec kit from the 95 S1.5 rather appealing After months of searching I managed to score the M-Spec Front Bar for about $150 & the Sideskirts and Rear Pods for $60 #Winning The kit did need some work, but that was ok, here's what it looked like -

So after my LED Tail-Light install I fell in love with these lights, they were super bright, full LED and made the car look great at night So I decided to get in contact with the people who made my Tail-Lights and also bought genuine Nismo Shaded Indicators (Side) which they had opened up and converted to full LED and genuine Nissan S1 Front Indicators also converted to LED My car was now full LED and it looked amazing! The shaded Nismo Indicators definitely went better with the black paint Inc Tail-Lights and both sets of Indicators I paid just over $900, so was expensive but these things were the real deal! -

At this point, I liked the look of the car but wanted to give it more of a modern feel So I decided I wanted to get LED Rear Tail-Lights but there weren't really any that appealed to me as they all looked cheap and you lost the circle part from the light and got a little indent instead, similar to how the R34 Tail-Light's are. After a while of searching I came across a set of Tail-Lights that were made to order from a place in Japan, the best part about these lights was that they took genuine Nissan lights, professionally opened them, converted them to full LED (Brake, Indicators & Reverse) not just LED globes, full LED conversion and then resealed them and sold them. The only issue was they were super expensive but I just had to have them! So $670 later and my new lights had arrived Please keep in mind, these photos don't do it justice and they have to be seen in person to really be appreciated! These were by far the easiest upgrade as they didn't need any modification done (As they were genuine Nissan R33 Tail-Lights) they just bolted straight in and used my existing light plug thing Here they are: -

So, by now (If you're still reading ) you are probably wondering why my thread is called "The Black Pearl", if you weren't wondering then shhh, play along . As most of you know 33's have adopted the "boat" name and so instead of sitting there trying to justify this I decided to embrace this If my car was going to be a boat then it would be one of the fastest boats known, and so "The Black Pearl" was the nickname my car was given and goes by today! In commemoration of this, I got a custom sticker made up -

So now that she was looking mostly schmick on the outside, I drove around for a while with an endless list of stuff I still wanted to do The mod bug is definitely crazy! The car is never complete, there is always something new that can be done and that's what I love about building a project car. There's always room for improvement and changes! -

So next on the agenda (If I remember correctly) I decided I had to get rid of those ugly wheels! So after searching for a while I found some wheels that went with the car and I decided they would do until I bought my desired wheels (Enkei RPF1) I scored them for $300, so no complaining there Offset isn't great either, but they are so much better than my previous rims and that's nothing spacers can't fix So then I was off to the tire shop to get tires for them and get them fitted! Out with the old, in with the new -

Next in the aesthetic changeover was new plates Now, these new plates don't mean much now, but they will! I have a few things planned So $500 later and 3 weeks of eager waiting and I had my new plates! -

I was loving the look of the new spoiler and upon looking at it I had an idea, probably been done before but eh My rear washer arm never worked and so I planned to remove it, weight saving yo! , and plug the holes up with a rubber bung I got to work on this, the only issue I had was removing the nut holding the motor to the window as it was rusted AF! I had to get a mate to carefully dremel it off.. once this was done it was a matter of finding the bungs to fit and I was good to go. Again, IMO I think this makes it look a lot cleaner too! -

So I was content with the engine setup the way it was, keep in mind at this time I was still at the Video Shop and so I didn't want to do anything more in case anything went wrong because I was worried I wouldn't have the funds to fix it. So I moved onto some more aesthetic things One of the things I've never liked about the S1's is the horrible spoiler on the back, so I decided I'd change that. I didn't want to go for the GTR spoiler as I didn't really want to put a GTR part on a GTST All of the after-market spoilers I had looked at also didn't take my fancy So I opted for the straight swap and bought a S2 Spoiler Here's the before and after, much better IMO! -

So I again felt the need for more upgrade's so I saved up for about 3 months on Video Shop wages and brought myself a brand new Apexi Power FC w Hand Controller for about $1,200 from Nengun.com Ps, everything on this build so far was brought brand new and genuine, which I pride myself on given the fact I was @ a Video Shop only getting about $300pw. Thankfully I have a full time job now, which makes things a bit easier It arrived rather quickly too! I was then off to the tuners (No photo's sadly) and made about 250hp w a Boost Tee on 13psi (stock turbo) @ HyperDrive Motorsport in WA. -

Here are some photo's of how it stood at that point in time, I still wasn't convinced on the S1 look, wasn't aggressive enough. But then again, it didn't get me cop attention, which is always a good thing -

I then decided I wanted a dash colour change and so I paid for it to get plasti-dipped, at the time I liked it but now I am looking to do something different. This is the new look I want and will be doing soon, it's Hydro-Dipping, really interesting stuff! and it looks a lot cleaner IMO
