  1. hi mate! i wouldn't be too concerned with the "amount" of power the amp has, at this level. you must realise that the difference between 100w and 200w is only 3db. try to use the sub's power "rating" as a guide only because theres not really such a thing as a sub with 200w or 600w. no sub has watts. oh and don't necessarily buy based on "label". if you had a choice between a 50w orion and a 800w boss, chose the orion, for example. get your box for the subbie right, invest in some good installation accessories like calbing and mounting hardware etc, have a play around with the sub's position (which way it faces, angle, etc etc) and have some fun! best of luck david
  2. while there isn't anything wrong with an all-pioneer system, but i feel a mix/match approach selecting components you like the sound of from different manufacturers may give you a better and probably cheaper result. man, if i was you i'd shoot marty (fhrx studios) a message. he will have a system he can recommend to suit pretty much any budget and he's a nice guy to boot. Clicky!!!! best of luck! david
  3. oops! 2x post
  4. sounds good so, really, you haven't heard the kevlars in their optimum environment then, yes? i'll agree to disagree here. i don't need to listen to anything because i'm familiar with the sound of MANY speakers and the nature of sound from many many brands. i would've listened to over 1000 different speakers by now methinks. now, comparing a speaker with response drivers to dynaudio/epos/sonus fabre/martin logan bla bla etc etc is going to be pure folly. thats a clear division between a TRUE high end speaker and a DIY design, but compare it to db dynamics or accusound or any of the entry-level b&w/jbl/wharfedale/off-shore manufactured stuff (as good as it may be- bang-for-buck) and it'll be very clear what they can stack-up to. i'm sorry, but do the abx tests yourself and ye shall see. i'll give an example, i did a blind ABX test (do a google search to find out what this is) at a previous place of employment with a since discontinued jaycar bookshelf kit based on a response carbon fibre 6.5" and soft dome tweet (the ones in the unfinished jarrah box). a customer built these with his own crossover design. i put them up against a $1400 set of paradigm "studio reference 20's" and the response walked all over its ass. no competition. we compared them to mirage, more paradigm, redgum, sonique and more i cant remember off the top of my head and they held their head up high. these were all speakers in the $800-$2000 bookshelf market. they didn't stack up to the dynaudio audience 42 or 52, nor the epos bookies we had and there were plenty of speakers that WERE better, but we were damn impressed. this speaker cost the customer less than $500 complete. so did you have the tweeters on-axis? off-axis? in the kicks? in the sails? a-pillars? top of the doortrim? what amplifier were you running, or was it from a headunit? what EQ settings did you have, if any? all these factors make a big difference to the final sound. a friend of mine has the kevlars installed in his S13 and i found them to be bright yes, and harsh when pushed HARD, but certainly very listenable at sane listening levels! now, i'd never own a pair myself, but plenty of people will get enjoyment out of those speakers, so i'll agree to disagree again there. and plenty of people like a really disgusting, shrill, harsh, ear-piercing pain-inducing top end. you need to work in a hi-fi store!!! cheers david
  5. i will dissagree with you here. while there are plenty of brand-name speakers that will, of course, outperform jaycar components, you AREN'T comparing apples with apples. i will tell you now, you get a pair of soft domes and some decent mids (the carbon fibre-coned 6.5 responses they used to sell for example) and tie them together with a good xover and cabinet and you'll stand up to some VERY stiff competition in a hi-fi store. even the kevlars, placed in the right enclosure and driven from the right sources and amplification will be better than some of the stuff out there. with all due respect, i should know because i've done these comparisons and there is a LOT of crap that, simply, doesnt rate. the second point here is that some people will love the sound the kevlars produce. everyones ears are different and its a sweeping statement to say that one speaker sounds "better" than another. again thats your personal opinion. they aren't a bad speaker because you don't like them! a lot of people like a bright, top-heavy sound. for example, a really forward treble makes some people say "wow how crisp/clean"! i can name plenty of "cheap" splits that perform admirably in the midbass dept. the accoustics of your car or the way in which your speakers have been installed can (and probably has) had a huge effect on the sound they produce. sound deadening and proper mounting (kick pannel mounting for example or angled door buildouts etc etc) will change the sound of the speaker dramatically, esp in midbass reproduction. there are so many other factors to the final sound than the drivers alone. many years ago there was a gent in america (who some people might know ) who was competing in the IASCA sound-off championship (sound quality). his set-up was incredible to say the least - flagship gear and exotic/boutique brands. he took out 1st place. the next year he returned with a VERY basic setup - all kenwood gear - and took out 1st place again just to prove a point with the importance of installation. siksII do you have any pics of your kevlar splits installed? cheers david
  6. again, i'm gonna remain skeptical until i can see one made out of metal but if it turns out looking anything like the pics, i'm gonna be well pleased. i think it looks great! now, don't get me wrong, i LOVE the styling of all the lines in the past... every single one of them! but while they were competitors to "supercars" like the fezza's, lambos, porches and the like when it came to the drive, they simply didn't stack up in aesthetics, lets face it. i'd never say the skyline is a "beautiful" car. its hugely attractive and definately hotter cos its just so purposeful and i still touch my skyline's panels and get all fuzzy in the legs and want to whisper little things to it about how sexy it is, but the cars that are truly beautiful i'd say come from the pen of bertone or pininfarina or scaglietti. jaw-dropping ferrari 355s or 430s etc. tvr's completely hot and unique looks. the aerodynamic sophistication of porsches. lets face it, even the likes of the later model rx-7's... they're all "gorgeous" swoopy cars. now i'd STILL rather be driving my line, but they are what automotive beauty is all about. if this new prototype does turn out being anything like the pics, i say great! its styling is much more outrageous and avantgarde and, well, supercar than any of its predecessors and i think its about time nissan built a car that competes on EVERY level compared to the poms and italians and germans. *hops off soapbox and makes a dash to cover* d
  7. PRICE DROP!!!! car reduced to $26,000 ONO cheers david
  8. and i was there and left!!!!! nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. mmmm they are aren't they. they're absolutely sexual. spotted ib6ub9 today at kingston servo for a good ole chat. keep your eye out for one great-looking 32, for those that haven't seen it!!! d
  11. i don't know if there is a "performance" oil for autos. manuals are different beasts (syncros clutches etc vs torque converters etc) your best bet would be to contact some of the more reputable auto rebuilders to discuss the topic. d
  12. nope. these oils will work equally well in any gearbox, realistically. d
  13. uh huh mm humm... and i'm sure that "really" was excess polish you missed when buffing the bonnet... heh. on a more serious note, any action happening with the car yet? i'd love to see the beastie back on the road... d
  14. i feel your pain mate *gives rich a big fuzzy cuddle and a tissue*
  15. ahahahahhhhhahaaaaaa. lol nice. sorry rich but the man does have a point
  16. spotted gunmetal 32 gtst in kingston this avo. white seat covers, chromed doorhandles/mirrors. guages on bonnet. 18" bling etc etc. twas a perfect example of how i wouldn't modify my car but meh.... d
  17. gday peeps! up for sale is some gear i've recently upgraded. for a bit of background, home hi-fi is what i do for a living, so rest assured this is all very VERY well looked-after gear. i'll be sad to see this gear gone because it brought me so much enjoyment and formed parts of my system for a long time. anyway.... the bits are: musical fidelity X-A1 integrated 2ch stereo amp. this component was the first integrated amplifier musical fideliy released in the "x" range of components. i bought this unit brand NEW. 50watts per channel into 8R full bandwidth both channels driven 100% duty cycle <0.007% thd @ 1khz, <0.03% thd 20-20 unweighted and <0.003% thd 'a' weighted 230 x 110 x 315 true class-a operation external power supply unit. this is a sweet amplifier. let me say that again. SWEET. i used it to drive my dynaudio contour bookshelfes (83db/1w/1m) and it drove them amazingly! very gutsy little amplifier. because of its mode of operation being class A, it runs quite warm (not at all a problem...) and damn does it sound good! i have only just decided to sell this unit. i love it to bits. it was the best amplifier i listened to under $2000 back in 2003 and will give ANY amp you care to name around that price point some stiff competition. it was a bargain when i bought it and if it weren't for my desire to mod my car, i wouldn't be selling. unit is in EXCELLENT condition. it comes with box w/ full packaging, all paperwork, and power supply. retail was $1699 in its day. Sell $900 ONO sony cdp-x7esd what can i say about this cd player. if i don't get decent money for it, i'll keep it. THIS cd player should be all the demonstration you need of how sony used to be. typical ES all japanese manufacture. it weighs 17KG!!!!! i've put this in blind abx tests alongside the shanling sacd, denon's range, nad, marantz, linn, rotel, redgum... and a stack of others (at my old place of employment) and i felt that it blew them all into the weeds, particularly with its authority in the lower octaves. simply phenomenal!!!! dual 18bit dacs with 384khz upscaling. yes you read right a 1992-design that upscales to 384khz!!!!!!! separate power supllies for digital and analogue circuits. copper chassis full remote functionality balanced/unbalanced/optical/coax outputs one of the most impressive transports i've ever experienced (INCREDIBLY STABLE!) i have absolutely no idea what it was worth in its day (A LOT!!!) but i know that i paid $800 for it, had a brand new laser put in it and the unit fully serviced with a mate at a sony service centre ($370). its in excellent condition (esp. considering its age!) i don't have the original wood side pannels, but they look cheap anyway comes with manuals and information booklets (i lost the review!!! ) remote and all usual bits and pieces. no box but will be shipped in ultra good packaging. Sell $700 sony mds-ja3es awesome minidisc deck. got 5star reviews left right and centre in its day. this unit was purchased by a friend for his studio back in 1998 and it saw about 200hours max before i picked it up from him. its in awesome condition. optical/coax/unbalanced rca inputs and outputs frame and beam chassis sampling rate converter 20bit atrac adc/dacs the stereophile magazine review benchtested it and found that when they recorded directly from DAT or CD the frequency response was identical - way beyond their sophisticated measurement equipment could measure anyway. very impressive unit. retail was $2299 or $2499 (can't remember) Sell $500 ONO if you'd like any more information or you've got any queries, don't hesitate to send me a PM or, alternatively, you can email me at [email protected]. items are located in canberra. cheers! david
  18. i'm yet to see a quality driver become proper fried from too much power. to this date every singe fried voice coil has been because of too little power from an amp clipping. i ran a home amp (nad silverline) rated at 200 into 8R (which doubled its output into every impedance halving down to 2ohm) into a set of entry level 4ohm dynaudio speakers (audience 42) FLAT STRAP and they are still working just fine! these speakers were rated at 100w from memory. cheers! d
  19. it depends entirely on the tune, but lets just say that neither 1j nor 2j (or most factory powerplants lets face it) wouldn't be holding together for a long time... the toyota engines are tough as nails, yes, but they're not unbreakable. i'd like to see a 1j with 700hp last indefinately... d
  20. i'll be there if it isnt raining
  21. theres a bloke here in canberra - greg tarlington Pro Engines. he's got an awesome reputation around canberra thanks to his strong builds. word has it he's going to be doing OS-style spacer plate 3litre rb26 stroker kits. forged/balanced everything etc etc. i'm not entirely sure what money he'd command for a combination like this, but he'd be a good place to start with your 12.5k methinks! d
  22. all previous turbos before r34 were ceramic. i've never heard nor seen anything otherwise. anyone seen anything (non n1) that wasn't ceramic on 32/33?? d
  23. as in stock r34 horrible??? dude theo's car's front bumber is a 100% stock grade-a vspec affair.... (and i still wet my pants every time i see it!!!) d
  24. neither do i.... but 12.5k engine would be very nice nonetheless!
