Mate I remember when I sold my R33 GTST 2 years ago.. Every one had them advertised for $15k, I ended up taking $6.9k for it If I had a lazy $20k laying around I would surely take you up on it.

I bought a new Toyota Aurion the other day and the dealership offered me $1500 for trade of my R33 96 GTST. I was insulted to say the least. I hope you can get the money you want for your machine.

Its a pity your not in NSW, Thats the sort of car im after. I have a 96 Series 2 R33, 3" cat back (5Zigen?) exhaust, HKS pod. I imported it back in 03 through www.directimported.com.au Its just hard to get the baby out of the back seat these days... So I have to sell my beast. Cheers Matt

You probably could re-nitride it, but this all adds to cost - and makes a new one seem even more reasonable if your going to spend that much on fixing the old one. The old crank has done what? 100 000kms? Im sure a new one looks much more attractive. Cheers Sumo

If it was my money, I would sell the GTST, and buy a GTR. Get a car with a better starting base.

Manwhore: How do you go with the retro fit's? We were doing some testing with the XenonOz range of globes and found on an older car, that if the contacts in the switching were worn, that after the 3-4 flicks of the starter and the globe had not being lit - you would end up with no lights. The HID stuff can initially take up to 30amps to start a light we found.... Thats big current draw for small switching. Cheers Sumo

I would never take a step back in age if it was my choice... My 96 GTST is the oldest skyline I'll ever own - I would either upgrade to a series 3 GTR, or forget about it and look for a 2000+ sports car. Cheers Sumo

Heh, those globes are not a H4 base. I think they are a D2S or something like that, which means they will not lock into place. They are NOT a direct replacement, modification will have to be made, I have never done a retro fit for globes - so I cant offer advice. Cheers Sumo

A Nissan Patrol 3ltr Hitachi Alternator cost me $475 + GST.... That was at trade price too.

2nd hand units are a lucky dip. I have never repaired a Hitachi skyline alternator, just the Bosch units off the r31's. But I would go to you local Ashdown Ingrams (these blokes are auto elec suppliers) or Repco with your alt and ask for a price on a new one, they really only should need the numbers off the side, but if you take the unit they can double check. As the brushes wear in a starter you will get an inconsistent starting patterns. But I have also seen a brand new battery off the shelf that I have had to fit to a customers car and it has had a brake in between the cells. Do what Deren said by checking battery voltage, whilst cranking - this will give you the best indication, also check you main battery lead going to the starter - if these look ok - its time to pull the starter out, and give it to some mug they call an auto electrician . If you have ever looked into a hotwire AFM, They have very fine wire which wouldn't take too much to damage - saying that 100,000kms on a car would have to take its toll. Usually there are 2 - 3 wires, which measure resistance (hotter = less air flow, cooler = more air flow) which can be measured via voltage - hgow much current will flow through it. Basically they are unrepairable. Cheers Sumo
