Jun 2.7l Stroker Build Underway (hks T04z)
Shaun replied to StageZilla's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hey Brad, I know what youre going thru with the braid and fittings; i must have spent about $1800 at earls this month on water, oil and fuel fittings! Ive done a bit of research, and ive found that the teflon lined braided hose from Earls (Speed Flex its called) is the go for fuel. Everyone ive spoken to who have used normal braid have ended up with terrible fuel smell in the boot or cabin. If youve got the earls catalogue, you'll see that they have disclaimers everywhere about the use of high octane fuels with their conventional braid. Also, the Speed flex is graphite (?) lined so as to prevent the built up of static electricity. The braid is about $6/m more and the fittings are about 20 - 30% more but i feel its worth it. Or they sell aluminium tubing that can be formed into shape for fuel lines with aluminium tubing adapters. Just a thought. Shaun. -
I made the mistake of getting some paint stripping place to get the powder coat off because the alloy surface ended up really rough. But i just used a medium 3M sanding wheel (actually, i went thru about 10) on my power drill to get rid of the rough stuff. Then i used a fine wheel, then i hit it with cutting compound on a stitched buffing wheel on an 8 inch bench polisher, then i used finer compound on a loose leaf buffing wheel. Finally, i protect the surface with some autosol super duper fine sh1t thats gotta be ordered from Germany. I get in the cracks by hand or with a dremel. Thats the cast alloy cam covers etc; the stainless is another story! That stuff is really difficult because it work hardens if you heat it up too much and it becomes really difficult to polish. Polishing is addictive! Once you polish one thing, youve gotta polish the next because it sticks out like dogs nuts! I even replaced nuts, bolts and washers with stainless items that i polished. Its stupid.

My Turbo Upgrade What Power Should It Make?
Shaun replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
^^^^This is what GCG told me when buying my turbo. 700hp with the 1.06 and about 600hp with the 0.82. I would have thought that a 0.82 on a 3 litre would have been ok, if not under spec'd. I dont have first hand experience with 3 litres though; SK does. -
Hey man, thanks for the tips. I think ill definately get an engine damper before i start leaning on it. There's no chrome in those pics! Its all polished! There's about 200 hours of polishing on an 8 inch super cheap bench polisher. I bought the engine with terrible white powder coat on the cam covers, so i had to get it off! Shaun.

You can get the orange 'Flame Guard' from Earls in Silverwater. When you see it, its obviously a sh1t load better than other stuff around; but for $50/m it would want to be! Im not too worried about the cams at the moment. Theyre an easy fix later on, but yeah, im aiming for about 330ishrwkw. To be honest, i really dont care as the tyres will spin anyway. I just hope its nice to drive. Paul, ive decided to take your advice and use teflon lined braided hose from the surge tank in the boot. I really dont want that fuel smell, and it'll only cost $100 more. Earls must love me at the moment! I made all the heat shielding out of stainless. I spend alot of time on the shield above the exhaust manifold because i really want the package to be thermally efficient; hence all the ceramic coating and exhaust wrap. There's alot of surface area to radiate heat there! I sandwiched some woven heat guard in between the double layer manifold heat shield too; its really intricate and took for ever. Luckily ive got access to some benders etc at my dads high school! Ill keep you guys posted and put up some more detailed pics when im done in a few months. Im stoked to see some interest about my car!

Silverwater Automotive will be tuning the car. I was sold on the Autronic SM4 when i saw my friends 1100Kw twin turbo V8 idle and drive like a road car. The head has just been reconditioned without any porting etc. I figured that the tyres will fry without head work anyway! Ill see what the result is with standard cams and adjustable cam gears for the moment. Things will change in the future i suppose; such is the nature of the beast. Shaun.

Im using the new Autronic SM4. Apparently you dont run into ignition problems with the SM4. I think ill use the Autronic boost controller, as my tuner is quite familiar with it and says its excellent. Its hard to go past the PFC though. I really didnt want an AFM though (just my personal choice) and i didnt want to get the d-jetro (?) PFC. Ive spoken to turbotechnics in cardiff at length and drooled over their drag cars too. Guilt toy; Ha, How true is that!
-
Thanks Adam, i was hoping someone with experience in this sort of thing would tell me not to worry! I hope the Autronic goes ok; as i understand it, your very happy with your Autronic (SMC?). Shaun. BTW, are you using the Autronic boost controller? If so, any problems?
-
Thanks guys. Only gotta finnish the fuel system and wire in the thermos and boost controller now. Ill keep you all posted on my progress. Oh yeah Brad, ive addressed the oiling issues in the sump as well. Shaun.

Thanks. I think ill definately run with solid line from the surge tank until it exits the boot, and use braid up over the rear suspension componentry to the HICAS lines that are now used for fuel. I think itll actually work out cheaper than braid. Solid = $28 for 3m, braid = $44/m. On a side note, my turbo comp housing is sitting only about 5mm away from the shock tower. Im a bit worried itll hit the body with the flex of the engine. Ive got stiffer nismo engine mounts, but was wondering if anyone has had any troubles with this sort of thing. Shaun.

GDay, I just finnished sitting my engine in my car tonight and i thought id post up some pics of my work in progress. I also just wanted to use my new mobile phone to post pics up on the net! The car has been off the road for about two years now, after i spun two bearings in the 26 only a day after putting it in. An oil line popped off the remote oil filter, so always use braid with Earls fittings! Ive just been doing this one slowly because of the extreme expense of it all! Anyway, its a 97 RB26 with forged pistons, standard prepped rods, ARP everything, balanced everything, recoed head, GT35 turbo with 0.82ar turbine housing (its a street car and i want response), ceramic coated manifold, turbine housing, dump and front pipes, 4in trust exhaust, tial 44mm wastegate and all the other usuals. Oh, ive got an Autronic SM4 wired in too. Ive still got to complete the fuel system, which consists of walbro into surge tank and 044. I think im going to bend up aluminium solid lines from the surge tank to eliminate any fuel smell in the cabin. Anyone had any experience in this? Other than that, its just small bits and pieces like wiring in the thermos (EL Falcon items) and boost controller. Interested to hear from those who have a similar set up. Cheers.

I just recieved some nismo engine and gearbox mounts for my R32 from Greenline today. $261 delivered. Just Jap sell two engine mounts only (without gearbox mount) for $240.

No shit its not a case of bolting it on and driving away. You really do write some stupid shit man. I read your posts all the time and am constantly shaking my head. I know many people with GCG turbos as well, and none of them have had problems either, however, i did have a problem, and it seems several other people in this thread have had the exact same problem. Is it possible that someone out there, who you dont know, is having problems with a high flow? Im sure, as Gary indicated above, you can significantly minimise compressor surge with successful tuning, however, i decided not to take this route and am sharing my experiences with the author of this thread. I hate your sarcastic posts Nismood freak.

GDay, My girlfriends Mum is selling her 98 GT Forester because of a change in family circumstances. This really is a regretful sale due to the reliability, functionality and good looks of the car. . The details are as follows: • $18200 negotiable • 1998 model, first registered in 1999 • Black over grey in color, which is pretty rare • Second female owner • 170K Kms, mostly on the freeway to Sydney • Always meticulously maintained and always gararged, never modified • Excellent Pioneer CD player and speakers • ABS, central locking, airbags and all the other standard options • Never been off road or used to tow • Major servicing completed including timing belt, plugs, leads etc. Photos are below. Contact: (Anytime) Shaun. (Me) 0414972596 You can PM me, but phone is better because im rarely on the net. The owner. (Kay) 0421813355

I had the exact same problem with GCGs highflow turbos on my R32 gtst. Huge compressor surge on light throttle; they told me my BOV was the culprit, so i changed to a Tial item and that didnt fix it. They built me three turbos in the end, all of different confugurations, and none of them worked. I already had a Microtech, front mount, and all the other usual mods. After changing turbos for about 3 months (i got really good at it!), i told them to just give me an off the shelf Garrett and stuuff the high flow to hell. I never looked back, and the GT30 was excellent although the boost threshold was a bit high for the street (0.82ar turbine housing). As i understand it, the problem was that the compressor wheel is way too big, and it was trying to force more air into the engine than it can ingest. It therefore, goes back thru the inlet tract and makes that awful choofing sound. GCG fit huge comp wheels in the standard type housings, and then mate them up with small turbine wheels trying to get the best of both worlds. It doesnt seem to work on some cars. Someone please correct me if my theories are mistaken. I should mention that Brett at GCG was excellent throughout. He had my car tuned, didnt charge for the subsequent turbos, and carried out mods for the GT30 conversion for next to nix. their customer support, in my experience, is excellent.

These are those shock absorber looking things that connect from the drivers side strut tower to the engine. Just Jap sell em for about $70, but i also saw one at Advan yesterday for $399!

So are the standard GTR mounts solid aluminium? ie; they dont use rubber mounts connected to a solid mount like the gtst ones?? If so, the vibration and noise thru the car body would be increased due to the solid mount wouldnt it?

Thanks for the info, but did you mean to write the SX goes for $150 (not $50)? Ill ring em on Monday. -
Best Surge Tank Capacity & Fuel Filters
Shaun replied to Shaun's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
The intank pump sucks through a filter (as standard), so this will remove any debris before the 044. Also, im being a bit optimistic about the 700HP thing, so im sure the 044 will suit my needs. -
Hello, I was hoping some of you could help answer some fuel system questions that i have in regards to my unfinneshed project. Im feeding a fairly modified single turboed RB26 engine with a Walbro in tank pump and a single 044 external pump. The 044 will obviously draw from a surge tank that ill install, but which capacity will best suit my application. I can get 1.5 and 2.5 litre tanks, but which one? My turbo will support 700hp, so i suppose thats a guide as to the limits of the fuel system. Also, i bought an Earls 'in line' fuel filter with a sintered bronze element the other day, but a trusted mechanic friend said that in his experience these particular filters will pose a restriction to fuel systems like mine, and in retrospect, it does look extremely small! For those people out there with high HP engines, id like to know what fuel filters you are using. Its easy to get an SX or Magnaflow filter with -8 fittings (thats the size i need), but i dont want to spend $210 + fittings for a filter that will support 1500HP! Surely there is something in between that will suit my application. Does anyone know of cheaper filters that wont restrict flow but will perform their job well? It will go in line after the Bosch pump. Thats it thanks, Shaun.

GDay. As stated, i need the heat shield that goes over the left hand engine mount. I dont want the mount itself, just the heat shield. Please ring/sms me if you have one lying around. Thanks, Shaun 0414972596

Ive always wondered the same thing, but ive got an RB26. Does anyone know where they are on the GTR engines?
-
Got my kit today. Thanks for your efforts SK. Looking forward to installing them; although my car doesnt have an engine atm!

I know you can get em from nissan, but im a tight arse. Its the silver one. Let me know, Shaun 0414972596
