Adjusting The Idle Screw On The Aac (rb20det)
RB30-POWER replied to lows_13's topic in General Maintenance
To clarify how you adjust the idle, i've written the correct procedure below as the RB25 and RB20 procedure is different. On the RB20DET (as asked by the thread starter) Make sure the car is at operating temperature. Make sure ignition timing is 15deg btdc @ 650rpm. Disconnect the AAC Valve connector to stop the ecu controlling idle. Adjust the idle screw to 600RPM. Clockwise will make it decrease (screws in blocking the bypass passage and less air means less rpm), Anti-clockwise will increase the idle (screws out opening the bypass passage more and more means more rpm) Reconnect the AAC Valve connector and the idle should be approx 650rpm (+ or - 50rpm) If the idle is higher, make sure the diagnostic screw on the ecu is fully anticlockwise as this can increase idle if not fully anti-clockwise On the RB25DET (not asked by the thread starter) Make sure the car is at operating temperature. Make sure ignition timing is 15deg btdc @ 650rpm. Disconnect the TPS connector to stop the ecu controlling idle. Adjust the idle screw to 650RPM. Clockwise will make it decrease (screws in blocking the bypass passage and less air means less rpm), Anti-clockwise will increase the idle (screws out opening the bypass passage more and more means more rpm) Reconnect the TPS connector and the idle should be approx 700rpm (+ or - 50rpm) If the idle is higher, make sure the diagnostic screw on the ecu is fully anticlockwise as this can increase idle if not fully anti-clockwise -
What Would Make An Rb25 Idle Hunt?
RB30-POWER replied to copycutter's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Im not familiar with the plazmaman plenum physically, but before it was bolted up did you put a straight edge over the plenum base where it bolts to the runners to make sure its perfectly flat. I know on some plenums when they are welded the base warps and if the base isn't machined perfectly flat, it will never seal, even with a gasket. I doubt this is the issue with such a nice plenum, however some things need be checked when looking for those illusive bugs and gremlins. I will have a look in the manual for what pin number the TPS wires are a little later tuna_144. -
Pulling Out R32 Manual Gearbox
RB30-POWER replied to Baz's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
If i was doing this in my backyard i would always remove the gearbox and engine, that way with the engine on the ground its real easy to line it all up again. Stuff trying to get under the car to line stuff up. Motor comes out with very little extra work if you have a hoist. -
Reverse Light Not Working Or Flickering
RB30-POWER replied to Mid_Nite_R33's topic in General Maintenance
you can usually spray heaps of degreaser/contact cleaner/wd40 into the switch and it will clean the oil from the gearbox off the contacts so it works like new again. just make sure the pin isn't warn down. (it shouldn't be, but a common problem oh high km neutral switches in these gearboxes) -
best to remove the rear housing altogether, that way you can soak it in degreaser and hose it off. if you can't remove the housing, just get a rag that has been dipped in kero or degreaser and wipe the crap off carefully.

very simple. its the clutch stuffed.

If you don't want to splice and solder into the wire. Go to any autoshop and buy some 3M scotch locks or equivalent. That way you only need to clip the wires together and can remove it without damage to the harness in future. A tacho pulls stuff all current so the scotchlocks are perfect for the job.

You need to remember, turbo sizing and cam specs aside. The 2L SR20 has the same displacment as the RB20, therefore all things being equal it will have the same total airflow as the RB20. However the thing you need to remember is that the SR20 only has 4 pistons, so less pistons, less valvetrain componentry, less main bearings all equals less friction and reduced pumping losses. So its means the SR20 in theory is going to be alot more efficient at making its power, with less places for loss of power to occur. Thats my 2c anyway...

Of course all the above assumes you are still running standard engine managment? -
What Would Make An Rb25 Idle Hunt?
RB30-POWER replied to copycutter's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
First thing first, -Make sure there is no vacuum leaks -Make sure the plugs are gapped correctly and not fouled -Make sure the ignition timing is set to 15deg btdc @ 650rpm -Make sure the TPS is adjusted for idle position (0.4-0.5Volts @ idle) -Make sure the base idle is set correctly. To do this you have to make sure the engine is at operating temp & all electrical loads such as lights, AC etc are turned off Then remove the TPS connector (this will set AAC valve opening to a set opening i.e no feedback or change to idle rpm) You now need to adjust the screw on the idle adjusment assembly so that the engine revs are approx 650rpm (+ or - 50RPM) Then reconnect the TPS and the base idle is set correctly. -
Your Advice. I Have A "good" Dilemna Here
RB30-POWER replied to LatinR33's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
put it on, reduced pressure drop across the core, more heat sink area to effectively reduce heat soak in traffic, plus the greater core area is going to aid cooling immensely when moving along even with stock boost. -
Not to mention the extra detergents and stuff in the premium fuels, goes along way to keeping your fuel injection system nice and clean. Your Skyline has active knock sensing that will retard the timing by x amount however, it isnt designed to pull timing enough to cater for a drop in ron from 100 to 91. Besides, once the system even your old mans pulls the timing etc, your fuel consumption and power will go to the shitter. So he may not end up saving 4c/L after all.

way to much though...

Yeah, you just want an 18x1.5 O2 sensor bung welded onto the pipe. -
Carbon Deposits On Head Normal?
RB30-POWER replied to MerlinTheHapyPig's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Way to rich mixtures, nothing more, nothing less. (what caused the excessively rich mixtures would be the real question) You can get upper cylinder lube/cleaner or carbon clean in a bottle you spray into the inlet manifold and it cleans the piston tops, valves etc, without having to remove the cylinder head. Water also does a good job, but you have to be very careful, if you don't know what your doing as you can hydro lock it. You don't want all the carbon in the combustion chamber at all as it can get rather thick in places and cause hot spots that glow and cause the engine to detonate. You don't usually see modern engines in a state like that, because the ecu's control the injection so precisely. But you get a backyard racer boys that fiddles with oxygen sensors, fuel pressure regs, injectors etc, without having a clue, you can get the above effect. -
Is that a 6 or 8 heat rating on the side of the plug? If its an 8, thats way way to cold for your car, unless you making a sustained 500+hp all day at the racetrack, they are going to foul and misfire real quick.

Aftermarket seals about $5 each from any spare parts shop. (Same seal as used in RB30, so just ask for VL Comm/R31 Skyline crank or cam seals, same part for all the seals crank and cams on all RB engines) Get genuine seals if you want about $15 each though. (I use aftermarket on all my RB engines, without drama) There is a thread with the part no's for the tensioner and idler, tensioner is about $40 and idler around $60 aftermarket from any bearing store/supplier. Can go genuine as well but they are like $100+each bearing.

Clutches Aint Clutches
RB30-POWER replied to Triskillion's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Main thing i would say is make sure you get the flywheel refaced at the same time you fit the clutch or else you may have issues with the new clutch as well. -
Input Shaft/thrust Bearing Noise.....
RB30-POWER replied to lows_13's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
If it makes the noise in neutral and gears with clutch released as you said. It may be just the gearbox bearings in the best case scenario, or worse case it will be the hard casing worn off the input shaft and cluster gear set, causing the noise and wine. Make sure someone that knows what they are talking looks at it, as you don't want to pay $600 odd bucks to get the bearings replaced if the hard casing is worn and its still going to make the noise after the rebuild anyway... If you can pick up a genuine low km box from wrecker or half cut for $500, might as well just do that. There is always confusion as to what is gearbox noise and clutch thrust bearing noise, if its the clutch thrust bearing it will only make noise when the clutched is pressed to the floor. This is when the carrier pushes the thrust bearing into the pressure plates fingers, causing the two halves of thr thrust bearing to spin and if the bearing is f**ked make noise obviously. (Only get this problem usually if the bearing wears out from the owner sitting at the lights holding the clutch in, instead of selecting neutral and releasing the clutch) Just stating both issues as your post isn't entirely clear. -
Ecu Diagnostics - Afm Came Up Faulty
RB30-POWER replied to WazR32GTSt's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
As above possibly dry/cracked solder joints. If the AFM circuit board looks ok. It can't hurt to check the wires for continuity as well to rule out potential breaks somewhere. If all the above fails get a s/hand one off here from $50-$100 on average. -
Yes nissan do a "liquid gasket sump gasket" When i asked for a gasket for an RB30 a few years back, they said, no gasket only the genuine Nissan "liquid gasket sump gasket" From that point, i just went to local auto parts shop and purchased gasket maker as its cheaper. But if you want the factory sealant, you can easily get it through Nissan.
