Missfire Boost@4500-5500 RPM - The Answer! (for me at least!)
SLY33 replied to Nightman's topic in General Maintenance
developed a pretty bad miss from 4grand up, well its more like a rev limiter sound after 4 grand! other than that it drives normal. Suspect its a coil or even 2 coils seeing as the miss is so bad. I was recently told that hitting the rev limiter frys the coils, i did not know this, and the car usually hits the limiter regularly... after reading this thread i pulled out all the coils and had a look, the one closest to the firewall has a very fine crack as is the topic of the thread. i took a picture but the crack is that fine, i had to struggle to identify it, but running my nail over it you can feel it. All other coils appear fine. you cant really see the crack in the pic, but the arrow shows where it is. it runs vertically about 3-4mm and starts underneath the raised numbers on the coil pack. Im still not 100% sure its a crack, as it looks like a mould/cast mark or something, but none of the others have it so i guess it is a crack.... im off to buy some insulating tape to wrap it up. Ill let you know if it fixes the prob! -
they arent supposed to contain ethanol. There were some cases a while back where ethanol was found in some fuels, but its illegal or something coz it can cause damage? so id say none of it has ethanol at present. the 8000 and ultimate 98 are both quality fuels, your pretty safe using them. Better than using optimax in my opinion. I tried it for the first time when i took my car to NSW and the car just didnt want to rev out. I put it down to a bad batch of optimax, as i had to use some a while ago and it was fine. but that said, i have optimax in there now, been sitting there about a week and a half, and now i have the same problem, it pops and wont rev out, so i wont be using it again unless i have to.

just curious, wat costs ~2grand that cant be sold?
-
i know what you mean. i looked around, but couldnt find anything that suited my needs. so i had to make one myself. it feels great.
-
my single plate does this sometimes if i try and slip it... dont know if that helps.

well at least you seem to be getting somewhere with your complaint. It seems SA import owners are getting pretty short fuses after all the hassles and pointless defects, just feel the hate in this thread towards SAPOL! Very soon someone is going to crack and they will have to change this bullsh1t "defect even if the cop suspects it might be defectable" crap. As everyone aggrees it is beyond a joke. whoever mentioned it ( i think steve) is right about going higher than the cops and straight to the people who can change/make the rules. Surely if that person were to see/hear some of these absolutely petty examples that something could be done... The whole defect issue should be concentrated on safety anyways, not because the car makes an occasional noise on gearchange. The whole fact that ten year imports have better brakes and suspension than even new local cars is ridiculous.

i have nothing against the GCG stuff or aussie turbo combinations, but it does seem that with the HKS stuff you can pretty much just choose tried and tested turbos for different applications that are going to reproduce results that you expect. GCG have been making turbos for ages, but why do ppl still run into problems such as struggling to make expected power, surge, and mismatched wheels and housings?! SK has shown more than once that you can get the results your after as long as you do the RnD necessary to make sure you will get what you want. With the HKS stuff it seems more of a no brainer. I often read about turbos put together with x exh housing and y compressor housing and z trim wheels etc... fine if you know exactly how all that stuff works! but id say for a lot of us choosing a brand name that works out the box with no need to have to pull it off to cut back exhaust wheels etc is a bit of peace of mind at purchase. Then again im not saying thats worth the 2grand or so extra! (actually its not a lot more than a highflow unless you purchase it in australia! Greenline sell HKS 25**for around 2 grand plus delivery, which really isnt much more for a name) Also the brand name itself, i know it means nothing but personally i like the fact that my turbo has HKS stamped on it, and i like the fact that its a jap tuning brand performance part (ignore my turbo smart BOV ) But at the end of the day if it works it works. Id still like to see a highflow and equivalent HKS superimposed dyno runs to see if HKS really does have "power and response"
-
is there one person with a high flow GCG that wants to meet up?
-
yeah 13.0 and 114 mph (not 113) yes i have a power fc, and that run was with 218rwkw (high flow cat knocked of ~10rwkw.) i dont have the std pump, running an 044, with std injectors.

guys maybe i shouldve stated that im not looking for a scientific comparison! I just want to get a few cars in question together to see how they go, call it just for fun then.
-
yeah ive thought about that too in order to do a critical comparison, but for real world comparison each person is going to have a diferent tuner anyways. Im not talking so much about power but more how they drive. Also it should be easier to get a group of cars together than to find someone who wants to swap their HKS for a GCG or vice versa.
-
hi guys, every week there is a new thread asking about GCG hi flows vs HKS GTseries bolt on upgrades for 33's. I myself went the HKS, but still strongly considered the GCG. I thought it would be interesting if we get a few cars together with the above mentioned upgrades and do some road tests, as i think it would be great to put them side by side and compare lag vs top end etc. Mainly im interested in seeing them side by side rolling runs from 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. Id also be keen to go for a ride in a GCG hiflow fitted 33 for seat of pants comparison. Would anyone be interested in getting together for this?
-
the GCG option is easily the simplest, but not the cheapest if your get a 2nd hand hks turbo, but then obviously its not new! So basically i would only consider a 2nd hand turbo if it was very well priced and in excellent condition.. As far as looking stock is concerned, youd have to look pretty damn close to pick an HKS 25** sitting down there instead of the stocker. Put the heat shield back on and your definitly not gonna tell. from what i hear the stock fuel pump becomes unreliable at 200rwkw and above. As far as the stock injectors go, ive been running mine flat chat for just over 5000kms with injector duty constantly between 95 and 100%. I have a reg but the tuner didnt bump up the pressure when he tuned it, as it only reached mid 80's on the dyno... Recipe for disaster, maybe! Everyone says dont run over 80% efficiency, obviously this is so you have some fueling capability in reserve, but can someone who knows the actual technical reason tell me why if my absolute max peak duty is just under 100%, and AFRS are fine, knock is fine, what is wrong with running such a high duty cycle? do the injectors wear out or something? Is my setup a time bomb in its current high duty-cycle state?
-
Just a point of interest for the 34 injectors, I know SK has tested them to be around the same as 33 injectors, but just for reference sake: from HPI #32 (Project R34 article) "the std injectors on the RB25DET Neo engine are only 340cc/min... ...Unfortunately Nissan chose to update this engine with the skinny new plastic bosch inectors, so aftermarket options are limited."

in my post i was more referring to the head porting causing loss of response, as how i understand it (btw i am perfectly willing to accept i am wrong) as you port the heads for higher flow, you increase the size of the ports and therefore decrease air velocity at lower rpms which gives less response until the revs get up a bit more. Rev i am quite happy to be corrected and i never state anything im not 100% sure of as a "fact", (i will always say i think, or i suspect, or as i understand!). Now dont take this personally as im not trying to get up you, but i find some of your responses a bit annoying, even though im pretty sure your not having a go either. I realise that you personally have done a lot of R&D for your 33 and have a lot of info to offer, maybe its just me but i sense a bit of attitude in some of your posts. My name is not jack, it just sounds a bit (ocky to me. cheers buddy

Evan, hows the e-boost going for you? Have you had a play? brings the boost on pretty hard if you want it to!
-
250rwkw not possible with the 2530 (a really big MAYBE if you get REALLY FAT cams and a load of head work but then i suspect you'll lose the trademark response of the turbo!!)

HKS2535 on RB25DET results...round 1
SLY33 replied to SeriesIIGTST's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
obviously headwork and cams are going to increase power. But from a bolt on point of view, most people going a small upgrade turbo arent going to take the head off, and go into the territory where you spend significantly more dollars for not so significant powergains. also headwork and cams arent going to change the fact that the exhaust housing is too small, so if you do have a 2530 on an rb25, your wasting your money trying to get extra power from heads and cams when you can just swap it for a 2535 or similar. -
HKS2535 on RB25DET results...round 1
SLY33 replied to SeriesIIGTST's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
i dont think so, due to the fact that as mentioned a 2530 on an rb25 wont hold boost up top, i have tried every avenue to fix this on mine, 227rwkw was the max we saw with no cat. for over 230rwkw id say youd have to go for the next step up, the 2535. exhaust housing on 2530 too small for 2.5 litres and spins out of efficiency over 5grand. There has been a lot of talk about a 2530 being good for up to 250rwkw, but this is not so. ideally it is suited to the rb20 where exh gas flow is not so high. excellent result for the 2535! this is what i should have started out with. 2530 is extremely punchy, but the inability to hold boost makes a flat-feeling top end. -
Cost of mods and What does your car owe you?
SLY33 replied to meshmesh's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
this is actually a good thread, coz it doesnt make me feel so bad! Didnt realise there were so many who spend the amount of the car plus more on mods.. Its crazy how it all adds up, and the whole "couldve bought a GTR" thing comes to mind... has been a lot of fun tho, and if i had a GTR it would eventually be modded just the same but more expensive then it would be "couldve bought an R34 GTR!" -
yeah hiep, i am the original SLY33 -and my paintjob is worth more than 4g's sweet r34 cell!!
-
got work every saturday too, sucks... thanks for the offer adrian but i had someone film all of my runs, cheers. Does anyone know John or Johnny with the red r31 ABUSIV? he wanted a copy of his runs against me..
-
cool pics flaps, where did you get them? i cant find them on fullboost.com.au?
-
spewing, i looked on the net and it didnt say cancelled, so i went 50 min drive there, to find the ***n cancelled sign on the gate. AND IT DIDNT EVEN RAIN! it was perfect for it! nice and cold and dry! absolute bastard. i did get one run tho, from the entry gate to the end of the road in anger
