All You Spray Painter Experts Out There
frogman replied to lingeringsoul's topic in Exterior & Interior Styling
Yep, if they are fresh plastic... rub them with a green scothchbrite pad and soapy water (carwash). Don't use much prepsol on a rag to clean them, but wipe them on/off twice. You will have to use a plastic primer too. -

All You Spray Painter Experts Out There
frogman replied to lingeringsoul's topic in Exterior & Interior Styling
Yep, if they are just raw fibreglass gelcoat, you will need to primer them first. Give em a rub with 320 dry, then wipe on/wipe off with wax & grease remover (prepsol). I'd say put on 4 good coats of primer (I'll guess you are using acrylic) Best to let it dry overnight at least, before rubing with 400 wet to knock it smooth, then a quick 800 wet to get the 400 scratches out. You can 'guide coat' it before & in between coats too if you want, use an acrylic spray can though not an enamel spray can. Another prepsol before they are ready for colour. You only need to paint the colour till its all covered evenly, around 3 coats should be fine. You can pretty much just keep going with the clear, just normal flash off time is ok, so by the time you clean your gun out, it will be good to go. If you plan on cutting them back & buffing/polishing them up, you will want 4 good coats of clear. Let them dry for at least a day before cuting them back & polishing. It will depend on how much peel you got & how smooth you want them to be for how much to cut them back. 1200 or 1000 wet will be fine, just be carefull on the edges not to rub through. I used to use a buffing compound called 'Farecla' on acrylic (back in the day!) to get all the 1200 scratches out, then polish them up with Autoglym Super Resin polish. Prep work is pretty much the most important part. Acrylic is pretty easy to work with & fix if things go wrong too, so good luck! & ask if ya have any more questions... heres some orange peel -

Wax & Grease Remover should clean it up no problem, most auto shops have it in their paint section.

Mazda Velocity Red is pretty nice. The pearl has a nice sparkle to it in the sun. Looks good with white rims, but I've got a set in metallic charcoal that look tough too... goes with the bonnet. Oran Park Skid Pan

My brother bought some nice 211 (late model 'square' headlight) bumpers for his car... but they didnt really fit on the 210 too well.. The front comes with blinkers but no rubber ends, the rear has the ends still. Have brackets for both front & rear. He doesn't need them, so is just selling for what they cost him, $80 each. pm me if you want pics, located in Sydney.

Yeah colour choice is a hard thing... its pretty much all up to you. The darker the colour, the harder it is to keep clean too... If you mean a deep metallic or pearl blue, it will still show imperfections, but not as much. A solid/straight dark blue would look... hmm..?? Take a walk around a few prestige car yards, BMW, Jeep/Chrysler, VW/Audi have some good colours to get an idea whats out there & what they look like actually on a car rather than just looking at 'colour chip' books. A solid gloss black r32 with black window tint, lowered, on any rims painted either flat black or dark metallic grey (like gtr colour), red brake calipers & redlines on the tyres would look pretty tough though! (& the dirtier it gets, the tougher it looks)

Check out the NSW section...some members on here are detailers or Michael's Auto Detailing 465 Victoria St, Wetherill Park, NSW 2164, Australia (02) 9757 4740 I havn't used him for a while now, but he buffed a few cars for me through my work. Nice guy, did a good job.

A full respray/colour change is a big job... door edges, boot, engine bay... If its not done properly (especially if you are doing it on a budget) it can lead to problems down the track if you want to sell it. Its up to you to decide how far you can/want to go. Even if you aren't going for a 'show car' job, black will show everything, especially any average repairs. If you really want to go black, then I would be paying your painter a little extra & getting him to help you out with the prep work too. If the current paint is generally pretty good, it shouldn't cost too much extra, even if he does the dents/primer & shows you how to rub it all down. Definatley use a 2 pack... I would recommend doing it COB (clear over base) even if you just want straight tinter black. There are heaps of different blacks from all the manufacturers, including metallics & pearls. Your painter should be able to tell you what brand of primer/paint he wants to use & how much he will need. If he wants to do it in acrylic, get another painter! Remember... preparation is the most important part of painting... especially for black.

There is a near complete, rego had only just expired, late model (single headlight) c210 at Pick'n'Payless Wreckers at Blacktown, (Sydney) both bumpers were good. Their number is 02 9676 5355. Maybe they could pull it off & freight for you? -
& you could just colour it in with black if you make a mistake ay!

geez, wouldn't have thought that the old armour-all would kill glue... might change my mind too then... I like shiney tyres!
-
Yeah? hmm... is that just for the whitewalls, or reds too? What/how do they do them?
-
Like the title says... I've been thinking about getting Redlines done on my tyres, or maybe even thin whitestripes (not fat 'white walls' like hot rods) Does anyone know who does them in Sydney & any idea how much they would be?
