350Gt Vq35De +T Build?
andy_cliff replied to andy_cliff's topic in V Series (V35, V36, V37 & Infiniti)
He strikes again So what is the difference exactly between the VQ25det/VQ30det manifolds exactly? Seeing as you provide more knowledge than a google search. Interesting. That is good to know, I will keep that in mind. -

After plenty of thinking and dwelling on the advice from Scotty and others about the constraints of cast iron manifolds i have decided to take a different path for the build. This build is no longer going to be completed in the near future. The reason being is i am going to be spending more money. I found out more info on the HKS Single Turbo setup in the past couple of days and i plan to base my kit around theirs. PS: Please let me know if the photo use is offensive to the owners as i have not asked for permission to use them. From what i can see from the kit it seems that this would be the best path to go down with some slight changes. HKS Single Turbo Kit - 350z/G35 (approx 270rwkw) The last thing i want to do is have to do this twice so im going to be spending some more money on the turbo and wastegate. I will be keeping an eye out for a HKS 3037 or similar for the turbo. Seeing as they work well with the numbers im chasing, it is a win win. With this setup from what i can see i will be able to use the stock manifolds as they seem to be essentially the same as the HKS ones? HKS just used Nissans VQ manifolds? If so. Thats awesome -

Not a problem. I was simply seeing if there were any cheaper reconditioned turbos worth using. Stupid idea really. Alright ill make sure i keep a pretty penny aside for the turbo. Hey, whats wrong with the RB26? I know the 20 series is laughable but the 26 is a great engine Granted the VQ is a much better option to get easy power from. Speaking of a VQ30 swap i remember reading an article from NZPC magazine that had a 350z that did just that. Good man, that is what i was wanting to know. Thanks! Yeah, I was looking at getting Sinco involved with a custom manifold but like you stated, the budget wont allow. -

I have heard of Uprev, however i have never heard the term used outside of the US until now. Im sure with 9k you would have a powerful & reliable setup. Im not looking at spending that type of money as i would do an RB26dett swap for that money as in NZ a RB26dett and box costs around 6k... Nope, i haven't had any reason to believe that the MAF would max out at 8/9 psi? The US F/I bolt on kits don't require a MAF change so i had presumed (never good) that the MAF was the same, therefore no issue? Cheers for the advice again Scotty. Why is that if you don't mind me asking? No way of cutting/welding the manifold to suit having the turbo further foward like the setup posted prior? Yeah, i wouldnt imagine the Holset would fit down in the stock position. I will look into the cost/what is involved of high-flowing a stock turbo and see if it is worth it. I also have this turbo in my watchlist. FPT Gt3076 Turbo (NZ company) http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/turbos/auction-688041090.htm Thanks mate. Much appreciated. -

I contacted NZEFI (One of NZ's best tuners) and they said that with some of the newer model Nissans like the 350z, 350gt's they are able to tune them without an aftermarket computer. I will be taking it in for a pre-tune consultation in regards to the ECU as obviously it isnt something you want to bugger around with. NZEFI are NZ's main stockist for Link computers and i believe one of the dudes there is one of the producers from Link? son of rajab! 9k?! Do you happen to have a list for your build by any chance? Quote from the tuner: "Hi Andy, Thanks for your enquiry. With the later model Nissans having a CAN bus we typically stick with retuning the factory ECU rather than fitting an aftermarket ECU. This is especially the case for automatics. We haven't done a V35 350GT VQ35DE yet. We've have done several retunes on 350Zs with the factory ECU and like you say your car is essentially the 4 seater equivalent so I expect that it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you want us to be 100% sure that we can retune your factory ECU then you should bring your car in for us to check over before hand. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Now for the build. This is as far as i have got so far with the planning. Ive been way too busy over Xmas/NY to put $ into the Skyline haha. Tune: NZEFI $800-$850 Turbo: Holset 3LD Turbo $400+ shipping http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/turbos/auction-686523897.htm Injectors: 550cc RB25det $300 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=685904641 Aluminium Intercooler piping: approx $200 + shipping http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/radiators-cooling-systems/auction-686400366.htm Intercooler: $160 + shipping http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/other-accessories/auction-686315039.htm Fuel Pump: Deatschwerks 320 LPH $155 + shipping http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/fuel-systems/auction-686820426.htm Oil pan spacer + oil feed: JWT VQ35DE Oil Pan Spacer Kit $150 + shipping http://www.z1motorsports.com/350_g35/product_info.php?products_id=2140 Turbo oil feed line: Driven Performance $120 http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/other/auction-686282369.htm Manifold: VQ30det Manifold + Cross Pipe etc $50! http://www.zclub.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=3754&highlight=turbo Oil Catch Can setup: Greddy $80 + shipping http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/performance/other/auction-687460120.htm Sparkplugs: NGK Platnium LFR6A-11 $80 Radiator: Megan Racing Radiator $260 + shipping (Apparently not crucial to the build) http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/partdetails/Megan_Racing/Cooling/Radiators/-/14878 BOV: $50 Hoses/Fittings: ?? (A friend will be helping here) So a rough estimate (not inc shipping costs) from the cost i have so far is: $2630 inc. tune Obviously this price will blow out a bit as other parts/general costs will be added but it is not a bad start. -

In reply to the earlier comments. I am thinking of mounting the turbo in a forward position as it looks like the room is going to be VERY limited in the stock position. I will look at getting the Manifold extended like this one: (not as high but further forward) More like the positioning of this setup: And then plumb the waste gate back into the exhaust like this: Would there be any benefit in using 3inch IC piping instead of 2.5? as it looks like most of the Bolt up kits use 2.5 for convenience... Cheers guys, Andy -

2:35. That poor man needs to get a welder onto that diff asap! either that or an LSD. Nice ride, i don't really like the Sedans but that one is quite clean. Sounds damn good too. When you say it cost a lot to get 425bhp, he did use a sedan and the Supercharger route. Im not saying it is not expensive, as it definitely is. He did however go for the underpowered G chassis (261hp compared to 282hp stock). Supercharger kits in the US are outrageously priced. $8000 for a bolt on setup that will get you approx. 350whp. By the looks of it he has quite a built engine also. How much did he pay for the polished pieces?! dat shine! @PN-Mad. That is gold. hahahaha -

Sweet as, i figured the spacer isnt terribly priced so i may as well. Good to know about the injectors, cheers! The kits from the US do not work on our cars as it is in reverse. Which is fine, i just wanted to use their guide to get a guage on how much work is involved on fitting a kit and how much they actually upgrade when creating a kit. As far as the air con goes, i will follow your advice, if it doesnt work i will take the other route Ill keep an eye out on turbo's. As i said above, im not doing the kit yet but like anything i just want to get all the research i can, so thanks. BTW - you missed out on a second hand complete HKS Z33 turbo kit that was for sale on Z club for $2100. It pays to keep your eyes out for the second hand market... Damn it! I have only just joined that forum! Some reasonable priced parts on there. Maybe ill scout for my coilovers on there @Scotty - Nope, not planning on buying the Turbonetics kit. Just using their guide as a reference to see how much is involved with their kit. -

I just found a very, very helpful guide by Turbonetics. They use this for their "complete turbo kits" they sell. http://www.treadstoneperformance.com/prod_imgs/installation/ul/install-41.pdf Turns out i just need to be able to borrow a mates hoist to get around most of the build. Sweet! -

Wow, cheers for all of the info guys! Im quite surprised no one has done this conversion already?! I have found a VQ30det manifold for $50nzd so far. There are a few wrecked Turbo Stageas on Trademe that i will get the rest of the conversion from when i am ready to do it ($$$) Addressing the notes from above: You'll need to fab the sump for a oil return. I was planning on doing what the Americans do and use a sump spacer as you can get them with the oil return on them already: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-Oil-Pan-Spacer-03-06-Nissan-350Z-Infiniti-G35-3-5L-/151160818159?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2331e309ef&vxp=mtr Injectors run out about 5-6psi as does stock afm - you'll need larger if using Uprev I am thinking about running the OEM GTR Injectors as they are 560cc from memory and fit straight in. Would there be any reason not to run 560cc injectors? You'll need to cut the front fibreglass member and just push the AC line out the way Sorry, what am i cutting the fibreglass member for? Is it because of this: From Turbonetics installation instructions: " PREREQUISITE STEPS: Before getting your hands dirty while under the hood, there are 2 prerequisite steps. See the following 2 sections for detailed instructions regarding A/C Tube Replacement and ECU Removal & Shipping. A/C TUBE REPLACEMENT: The first prerequisite step is to have a replacement air conditioning tube assembly (included in the kit) installed by a professional A/C technician. This is necessary because the turbocharger is located very close to this A/C tube in its factory location, so a replacement “shielded” tube assembly is supplied to move it away from the hot turbocharger. HAZARDOUS: Do not attempt to perform this step without proper training or equipment. Take your car to a local auto repair shop that is capable of discharging and recharging the A/C system on your car" You'll need a catch can setup. These motors can be pretty loose, and like to breath. Colder spark plugs. If looking at anything more that street cruising, a bigger radiator. Can't emphasise cooling enough. Big rad made heaps of difference in mine. Thanks a lot! Every bit of info helps and this is fast tracking the system. Much appreciated. Also just a couple of quick questions: 1. What size turbo would you guys recommend for the g35 and the power goals i am after? As from memory one of you fellas said the VQ25 turbo would choke the 3.5 up? 2. Would this conversion be possible without taking the engine out? As i see the yanks seem to do their conversions without remove the engine. Thanks again! Andy -

Awesome, much appreciated fellas. I wouldn't be looking for anything over the top. Just something a little more powerful than it is at the moment. The NA bolt on costs add up so in reality a turbo setup wouldn't be a bad option in my head. I would say 300-320whp would be more than enough. From looking at the g35driver forum i found a bit of information in relation to what i will need for the build. So at the moment it is clear i will need: - HKS turbo adaptor if i can find one. If not some fab work - Fuel pump (Walbro 255?) - Tunable ECU - Bigger injectors (440cc?) - Wastegate - Intercooler + piping - Oil pan spacer - Extended A/C line - Braided oil feed and return lines - All hardware for the install Additional notes, run no more than 385whp or expect the boom. Run no more than 8psi on factory internals also. Like i said, much appreciated guys. As expected this is something i do not want to mess around with so this helps a lot. What are your thoughts on this? worth it simply for everything minus the turbo? http://www.zclub.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=3754&highlight=turbo Andy. -
Hey there guys. I have had a look around online about building up my current 350gt into a turbo daily. I have seen/read many threads about the kits from the likes of Trust, HKS etc. I dont exactly have the $8000 odd dollars that they want for those kits. I have come from the S-Chassis community prior to owning the 350gt and was involved with a few sr20de+t builds over here in NZ. I have a couple of questions to ask. 1. How much power can you make "safely" on the stock internals? as the internet proves again there are mixed opinions. 2. Would it be possible to use a turbo setup or even a twin turbo setup from the likes of the VQ25det or VQ30det/VQ30dett 3. How much modification/fab work would be involved in going the turbo route for the 350gt? as i am used to the common theme of needing to add oil lines etc for the SR20de +t Thanks guys, Andy
