The short answer is it's almost impossible to register a vehicle in your name in Japan without having residency there. It might mean applying for a working holiday visa just to be able to do it. I'd personally recommend doing the reverse run and buying something in the UK, which would be a whole lot easier. But yes getting a CPD carnet is the only way to get through all the countries. Make sure you sort your visas well in advance, as many of the east European countries time your visa down to the hour - not handy when you get a flat tyre (and in eastern Europe, expect to kill all your tyres, a second set of tyres, and possibly a rim or two). Seriously, if I had a dollar for every time someone had asked me to go into a car yard, I'd probably already have retired. I don't know how dealers put up with the stress of it all, to be honest. The GFC and the tsunami were massive blows to the industry, both in Japan and Australia.

Cost is normally $150-250 and no it's not worth doing yourself. They arrange the paperwork for customs and quarantine - it's one of those things where if you get it wrong, you'll be in for all kinds of butthurt and storage expenses, which can be up to $100/day. Not worth the risk.

The customs value WILL include shipping costs, so if the total is more than $1000, you will pay duty.

It will need to be engineered. The process for anything pre-89 is the same, regardless of whether or not it's fresh into the country or has been registered interstate for 20 years.

V36 Type SP sedan in silver with 259,000km on it when it left Japan. This went through auction in May this year, and I had a suspicion that it would end up here, sure enough it has been complied in NSW on July 22. The 19s on it are fairly distinctive so it shouldn't be too hard to track it down. I'll leave the bloodhounds to do the work...
