You'll like the Canon 550D. Soon enough you'll be ditching the kit lenses and picking up expensive L lenses. You'll say you won't, but you will You don't really need to know all the mumbo jumbo as you are a true n00b. Just pick up the camera, start shooting in auto mode and figure out why it chose those settings. Then get the hell out of green box mode (auto)!!! ISO - Sensors sensitivty to light. Increasing it can bring on more noise depending on camera model. Landscapes - Always shoot at ISO 100 or lower And get a GOOD tripod ($150-$200) if you plan on using it for landscapes/long exposures. Exposure - Basically just means what settings you used. Under-exposed: Too dark Over-exposed: Too bright Exposure Needle/Meter: There will be a part on the LCD and in the viewfinder that looks like this 2..1..0..1..2 <-- There will be a needle underneath it. If it is at the left hand side of 2 it means it is 2 stops under-exposed. If it is at the right hand side of 2 it means it is 2 stop over-exposed. If it is at 0 it means the CAMERA thinks it is properly exposed. Generally, expose to the right. You can always pull detail from being too bright, but you can't always pull detail from being too dark without inducing noise in PP (Post production). One thing: DO NOT ALWAYS TRUST THE METER!!!! Aperture: F numbers. They can go up by 1/3rd, 1/2 or full stops. Read up on this, CBF explaining. Shutter speed: For e.g. 1/200th. Modes: Green Box: Auto. Camera chooses everything for you. P: camera chooses everything for you except ISO (I think, i cant remember) TV: Shutter speed priority. You change the shutter speed and ISO to what you want, camera chooses the aperture. AV: Aperture priority. You change the aperture and ISO to what you want and the camera choose the shutter speed for you. M: Manual Mode. You choose everything. C1/C2/C3: Custom modes that you can pre-program. Although unsure if it is available on 550D. The rest of the modes given with pictures of sports/faces etc... don't bother using them. That's about as simple and as much as i cbf typing now Good luck!

Hey Duncan, Well i figured it was so late already that everyone had seen what they had wanted to see and move on, i didn't want to spam on the forum that's why i just gave a link to the post on my blog, but if that is what you would like then i can do that? And Steve-O, i have PM'd you

#3 and last one do it for me. Great job lighting the black car. Although it makes it look purple-esque, but great job either way, really impressed!

Green box of death!!!!!!! In all honesty, a 50D will be getting pulled off the shelves soon, so dive in for a bargain possibly.

Nice Matt! Might need longer exposures as it doesn't look like its that bright. I'm going to try with a LED Torch that you use when you work on your car at night. Otherwise going to try the hard way with a 64" Octabox and a strobe inside with the power pack on my shoulder. Shall be a tremendous effort lol.

Good work Steve-O on getting so many track days at wakefield. Getting in early looks like it surely helped

Sweet shots mat! Turned out good. Did you use alienskins bokeh plug in on the first GTR shot of it going around the corner hard? Looks like you shot it at f1.2 otherwise, thats some super duper duper bokeh if its real! One of my favourites of the day.
-
#3 and #4 are the ones i like. Especially because i know how hard it is to light black cars at night! Good job mate and i hope you find some '34's for your photoshoot before you go back to LA

Great photos everyone. Here are some more of mine. And skids too!:

'Tis true, depends on how fast you pick it up, though there is much less to learn on a entry level camera like a 550D compared to a 7D. The AF on a 7D is very complicated compared to basic 9 point AF on the 550D. Then you have all the custom functions and settings, really depends what your going to use the camera for and if you will stick with it and experiment, like you said. Photography gear doesn't depreciate that much, so easy enough to buy a 550D and then if need be, sell it off and pick up a 7D etc.. I see your point - But there is no point paying that much coin for a camera if he/she is unfamiliar with DSLR's as well as not using 3/4 of the functions the 7D can utilize. For the extra $800-$900 spent on a 7D over a 550D, thats already almost a 70-200 f/4 non IS. If budget is only $1500, 7D is out anyway. Good to see you like the 7D and it's suited to your photography though

How the f@#k are you supposed to "Prove you were doing the correct speed"? Are you just going to drive from now on with a video camera strapped to your car just to show your speedo and purposely run over the grand canyon a few times? I've run into a pothole twice as large as that before, dented and buckled the entire rim, tyre instantly popped. I took it to the council and complained my ass off and took photos of it, took photos of the damage, it was a 50 zone in a back street of Manly, i demanded they pay for it, and after 2 months of b!tching and whinging to them EVERY SINGLE DAY they re-imbursed me my quoted amount. To this day, i hate the council, i hate the goverment (no matter who is in charge) and that is probably why my front passenger spring snapped completely in half on thursday. If you can involve lawyers (although i think it might be too expensive, but you mention they are family friends), take them to court and demand a re-imbursement! Don't give up.

W000 another Canon user! Go Canon!!!! You'll be thoroughly impressed with the 550D shooting stills as well as video. Be sure to stock up on high speed SD cards. The 550D is basically a 7D just trimmed down.

IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I viewed them fine last night, so i'm guessing he has exceeded his bandwidth. Never had some many hits before.... zomgtehlolz....BOOM!
-
Hahaha well that would help you out lol. Yes, yes you do OP - As Zennon suggested, get the starter/entry level kits, play around with them, then when you feel limited, upgrade your glass/body. Its not good to jump in the deep end with photography, so much to learn!

5DII isn't really suitable for n00bs who want to do motorsport photography though. Great for automotive, but not for motorsports. Slow focus, slow FPS, terrible AF point distribution also (very bunched up and gets super annoying!). I highly recommend a Canon 7D for motorsports but i think its "too much camera" for someone just beginning. Hell, i'm still getting my head around the numerous options it has and playing with the AF modes.

How much you willing to spend? The new 1DIV costs $6K In all honesty, i suggest getting a crop camera (APS-C) because of the extra reach (1.6x the focal length is actual focal length). Couple of questions? Have you ever used a DSLR? Can you hold a 3kg dumbell in your hand all day long? that will depend on if you can carry heavy lenses e.g. 70-200 2.8 IS and camera body. Do you know anything about DSLR settings or camera settings? No point spending $1600+ on a camera body if you don't know what 3/4 of the functions do

Thanks matt, same at you also. Where is teh panning practice mang!!!!
-
To be honest, just clicked randomly on any file and opened it up and edited them just for you guys craving photos lol.. I hope you enjoy! Loco, i think thats your car smokin it up or the other 180? Either way, i got both. Will be on the DVD if you bought it!

I think you need a tyre sponsor the way you were annihilating your tyres lol
-
Nice!! Always wanted to shoot fireworks! #1 and #2 are my favourite. Great job, especially for hand held! At web size, i can't notice the noise.
-
Epic day. Well organised, had heaps of fun. My lips are dry and my eyes are sore, but the amount of skids were awesome! Will post up some pics soon.
