  1. I know he wasn't saying it would increase economy. He was asking if he backed off the timing everywhere -5 degrees and ran a lower octane fuel would he get the same economy? I say no. That's why I don't run low octane fuels on a long trip - if I back off the timing say 5 degrees across the board to prevent detonation my responce and fuel economy will suffer. If we could run say 110 octane fuel everyday and run more timing you should get better fuel economy. It won't be a big gain in economy but a gain so just like you said - you will see a marginal increase in economy. I wouldn't say though that you will see 50 - 100k's difference between 98 and 100 octane fuel - it most likely will be what you said - 3-5% - hardly noticable. If you run afr's of 16:1 and put in more timing and drive sensibly I'd say you'd see 100 k's increase in fuel economy. I'm happy enough with 550 k's I get from my tank highway only. Cheers
  2. http://www.nengun.com/exhaust/hks/high-power-exhaust-silent This is the only cat back on nengun that's offered for the r33 gtst. I'm keen but don't know if the mufflers are straight through or have baffles in them - although I doubt they'd have baffles being an exhaust for turbo applications. I see a few of you recommend the hks hi power silent - just would like to know if anyone here has personally purchased and fitted one of these systems? I need it to flow well enough for no restriction at 290rwkw and also it doesn't say whether it has one of those push in restricters which I really don't want. Cheers
  3. Got to agree with SK here, I was impressed with the pfc's factory tune too - got excellent fuel economy and power was quite noticably up from factory. No serious knock either. You have to remember too that quite a few tuners will tune it for flat out 100% power runs - especially if it's only a quick tune so nothing for fuel economy but hey - you've got closed loop so it doesn't matter - light throttle will bring it back to stolich. If you're planning on turbo uprades etc soon I'd wait before handing over $for a full tune and like sk said - use as high octane fuel as you can to prevent knock. cheers
  4. From what I've seen in real life and read there are a lot of people driving skylines suffering from drone syndrome. A total pain in the arse as it comes from bad design and not much thought. Another thing I don't ever want to have is an exhaust that needs one of those push in restricters that people need to put in their rear muffler to make it bearable on the highway. You're effectivly restricting everything on the exhaust side so taking away performance and fuel economy gains. I had a look at the HKS silent power system online but it shows no pictures of the mufflers seperate to the system - if you want a good flowing muffler I think you should be able to see straight through it ie no baffles etc. I'm interested if anyone here has fitted one of these systems and had a good look at all the components? I've also found out the hard way that cheap mufflers that don't have stainless steel packing won't last a prolonged dyno session - 800 degree exhaust temps and next to no airflow will see your exhaust glow. That's what we think has happened with my centre muffler now - it seemed to get loud after the dyno tune but it was hard to say as I didn't drive it much before the tune. Also I'm interested in twin pipes/twin resonators/twin cannons from the cat - a few gtrs run twin pipes right the way though but I haven't seen too many gtst's. Had a chat about it with my dad - twins must change the tune so to speak. A downside to this is the weight penalty. Thanks for the input fellas - hope to hear more constructive comments. Cheers
  5. Thanks for the replies, Looks like I'll be looking the longest oval shaped rear muffler with the biggest body that will fit. I don't think the stupidly big exhaust tip on the existing cannon helps either - just must just amplifies everything. There's a big difference with load too - if there's only one or two of us in the car it's ok, but with five people onboard and a boot full of bags it's just too loud until you hit about 3600 rpm (120k's) and the noise falls. Cheers
  6. Hi all, My r33gtst has had a drone problem at 100 k's since day 1. Originally it had a 3'' exhaust with hi flow cat and stupidly huge rear cannon with 7'' tip. Stupid, but that's what came with the car and I have spent money elsewhere. I fitted a decent 3''in/out centre muffler and 4'' magic cat and it was great for awhile but then I fitted a bigger turbo and it was exactly the same as day one. Just like taking the centre muffler back off. A real pain in the arse. So now I'm looking at getting a new rear cannon of sensible proportions but want to get one which actually works - has anyone here swapped cannons and found one that significantly reduces that rotton drone at 3000rpm??? I've looked at a few websites and there's heaps to choose from - all not very cheap so I want to be sure that my new rear muffler takes some of the drone away at least and isn't the same as the existing one. I've run out of room under the car for other mufflers so this is my last chance otherwise it's earplugs. Cheers
  7. Got it going yet? I'm interested in seeing how this affordable turbo goes. Cheers
  8. Yep a lot of r32's BUT also a fair bit of dodgy stuff going on too - a lesson to learn here don't buy if you're not sure what you're getting. Also note that these are small problems when you take into consideration the amount of abuse/k's these cars would have taken to finally break. Cheers
  9. Cool fellas, thanks for the replies. It's been running faultlessly since I blew up the front cv joint, then the rear diff pinion - just a manufacturing fault as it's been running great since. Will take some pics of it midair tomorrow. Cheers
  10. Hi all, Anyone got nitro rc cars here? Just bought this one on a whim - 2.6 horsepower, does 38500rpm, does huge jumps and a top speed of 50mph. Cheers
  11. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...;p=1742392& It fits fine. Cheers
  12. I don't think I've ever seen such a bad collection of bad ideas put together in the v6's. From balance shafts, super long timing chains to pissweak conrods and water pump bolts that go through to the water jacket - they are a pitiful excuse for an engine. Pushrods??? They were supposed to go with the red motors and dinosaurs.
  13. V6 commodores - they have the worst engine I have ever worked on. Absolute rubbish - nothing like an rb.
  14. It sounds a lot more torquier than most with that supercharger - especially when compared to a mere rb25 like I have. Can't wait to see how it goes with big injectors + big boost - you'll have some major traction issues! Cheer
  15. What about shower restrictions??? So many people have 30+ minute showers - I reckon they use at least 4 times the amount of water I use to wash my car.
  16. There's nothing like driving through an icy winter night in a high performance turbo car! We really suffer up here in QLD. The rb20's don't do it for me anymore either. Dad and I fitted one to my old commodore 8 years ago and torque was such an issue. With boost etc it still managed to see off plenty of v8's though! If anything happens to my 25 bottom end I'll be building the 30 hybrid. Cheers
  17. What about water methanol injection fellas?? Can't wait to see how mine goes next tune - you can't get anything over an 8 knock now with the newly fitted kit. Your car shouldn't be hard to start in the hot weather - there's something else amiss there - your fuel pump will prime the injectors before you start your engine so it won't be the old fuel evaporating, and your injectors are closed anyway unless powered up unlike an old carby. Unless you get an intercooler spray kit or water meth your line will be sluggish in the heat, 'specially the rb20's - the rb30 boys probably don't notice it as much. Pushing your car in the heat isn't too smart regardless and fellas running un-shielded pods in the engine bay can only expect stinking hot intake temps. Cheers
  18. Getting the old hilux to ping won't be a problem. Anything will knock if you advance the ignition enough - I've had some old heaps of junk over the years and all have pinged. Cheers
  19. It must be a handfull to drive! Just wondering what nitrus set up you are running? Is it ecu or computer controlled? Cheers

  21. I must be lucky as I've never paid tax having purchased 2835 KIT, and pfc from nengun both of which were over a grand. Must be lucky - cheers!
  22. Hi fellas, Not too sure about the 0.87 rear housing being much better than the 0.68 - I had a chat with Grepin a few months ago when he went from the smaller 0.68 to the 0.87. Power went from 312rwkw to 320 with a bit of loss midrange. Looks like the 2835pros maxes out @ 300ish kw - no matter what you do it runs out of puff. If you want 300rwkw it'll do it but don't expect much more. Not too sure about what difference the 80-100 actuator will make - if it helps I got the .67 kit with 100 mm actuator. Also of interest both Grepin and I have problems keeping the wastegate shut - mine peaks @ 22psi then blows the wastegate open and boost falls to 17psi. Grepin got a higher tension wastegate spring and that helped a bit. Something else I found a bit annoying with the kit was the wategate actually hits the dump so can only open a fraction. Apart from that it fits up great with minimal headaches - the only thing we had to make sort of was the afm to hks intake pipe - we just cut down the factory rubber intake and it looks fine - a nice and factory look. Cheers
  23. Hi fellas, Grepin actually had the .68 housing originally and made over 300@the tyres, then just recently he changed to the larger housing - not much difference in the power output just moved it higher in the rev range. I think he said he's seen 320kw@ the tyres at one stage (maybe he had the wastegate wired shut!!!?) I'm going to stay with my .68 housing - I've just purchased 256 tomei pon cams and fitted water meth so am looking foreward to a new tune. Cheers
  24. Definately. Also you don't have to spend $850 if you look at some US sites. Mine cost less than $500 delivered from a company over there, although the price has come up a bit since. http://www.rx7store.net/category_s/89.htm Cheers
