I can't see the money being the major issue, if you have a regular job. Afterall, many will spend $2000+ on a set of crappy looking chromies, or an equal amount to play playstation in their car. I don't quite understand that most of the time, especially doing it to a "performance" car. But when you're that age, it's all about partying and impressing ur mates or the girls.
I think the main problem is probably similar to QLD.. a large number of the skyline owners you see are still living at home, and only able to afford the car living off their parent's back. They're not really willing to risk it.. and they don't like / don't want to learn how to work on their own cars if something goes wrong (or are well off enough to afford garage rates everytime they blow something).
Soon as they move out of home, its back to more sedate transport, or they've moved onto other things like buying a house, or popping out kids.
