  1. Sounds like the oil feed in the front is blocked. There are 3 feeds to the head, one dedicated gallery (yours is blocked) and two others that feed up next to the head bolts. This is the case for the RB26..... I presume you are talking about an rb20det?
  2. Are you sure you mean lobes.... or journals? (Journals run in the head/cam cap)
  3. You do realise the active ingridient in most oven cleaners is sodium hydroxide... aka caustic. Which is fine for steel, cast iron etc but not for alluminium, lead and other soft metals.... ie. it will eat it. It is the same chemical used in the "hot tank" at engine shops.
  4. I would say Willall are the people to speak to. Especially because i do there engine work! And dont you mean Willalls 8 sec GTR? Sorry to be a smart arse...
  5. .007" is way to much clearence in my opinion. Can you post up the spec sheet for us to see?
  6. If you are using an aftermarket multi layered steel gasket it is highly reccomended you surface the head as flat and smooth as possible. I personaly like to machine every aluminium head when the head gasket is replaced. (Im an engine recon'r so i do it every day) Save any trouble in the long run. Chris
  7. Was thinking about doing the exact conversion a while ago untill i got caught up with other projects! Wasnt goin to paint it that colour though... Any pix?
  8. Download this small program: http://www.joshmadison.com/software/convert/ convert just about anything
  9. Sounds like the headgasket to me. If you do remove the head: Make sure it gets taken to a competent machine shop where they should put a straight edge on it, pressure test it, surface the face flat etc. Take the gasket with you, they should be able to tell you if that was the problem. Keep in mind that if they vacuum test the valves and find a problem, thats where it can get pricey due to adjusting tappet clearence etc. At a minimum make sure the face of the head gets milled!
  10. Definateley change the valve springs, no doubt about it. Type A Tomei springs should be ok. (Alot better than worn standard) Who is cutting the seats? you have to watch valve protrusion... Do you have access to a spring checker of some sort? If so, be sure to check your spring installed height and then shim accordingly. About half way down this page - http://www.engr.colostate.edu/~dga/high_speed_video/ is some interesting clips of valve motion etc. Its no RB26 but it gives you an idea of what a stressed spring looks like.
  11. Are you replacing the washers because it says to do so in the manual? Or because they are stuffed??
  12. How many are you after? Oversize or standard? Naprec make rb26 valves, meant to be a bit cheaper. Havent seen any first hand though. Im currently machining up some titanium valves to suit different applications. I work on rb26 heads a bit, what do you need doing? I am in Adelaide though.
  13. Have you checked your belt tensioner?
  14. Im curently building myself an LPG only RB engine. Will not be using a gas carby though... LPG injection is the plan. Lot of development work to be done yet but its looking very promising (definate proven gain in power/economy) Only draw back is the price of the injectors/management. If you work out the cost of even the carby system - how long will it take before you actually save some $$$?
  15. Have you considered a ceramic coating? It is shiny, (not like chrome though) and stops a bit of heatsoak from under bonnet temps.
  16. To convert mm to inches- multiply mm by .03937 To convert inches to mm- multiply inches by 25.4. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Totally agree with you PROENGINES. But i do not agree with: I hace an RB26 ACL/ROSS piston in front of me. Reccomended clearence .12mm (.0047") That is 4thou and 7tenths
  17. Rumour has it the ACL MLS are only meant to be around the $150ish mark. fingers crossed. We are the same as you for head and block surfacing. Pcd cutter for head, cbn for block. Grinders can be funny like that. Very light cuts can eliminate the problems but it helps if the machine isnt flogged out and 60 years old. Might be getting a new one. Does your workshop have a dedicated surfacer/grinder? 3-4 thou is pretty dam dodgey hey.
  18. ACL are meant to be coming out with MLS gasket soon. I know they are making them for the gen3's soon and plans for import/turbo cars. Proengines, Do you know what surface finish is required for these gaskets? i know it is pretty smooth. We havent had any failures either, but ive been meaning to get the RA guage out and check what we are running.
  19. Please PM me your whereabouts so i can arrange postage for the head. Thanks
  20. Head gaskets from tomei, trust etc just look like a rebadged/stamped "cometic"(brand) gasket to me. A fraction of the price. Nothing wrong with a std one though.
