I have been having an intermittent problem with the starter motor not cranking over but lately it is happening more often.
Symptom - i will turn the key, can hear the clunking of the starter but won't crank. Occasionally it will start no problem though... when it decides it will.
So far things i have;
Checked & cleaned starter connections
Checked & cleaned earth points
Installed new battery
Without fail i have been able to get it to start by rolling the car a small amount - letting the clutch out to stop then turning the key. Also if i jump start it that will always get it cranking over, possibly also if i have immediately taken it off the battery charger (though haven't tried this enough)
I am wondering if i should bother getting another starter or i should install a relay on the starter motor circuit. I have done a search and it seems the relay is a pretty common fix, i am a little hesitant as it does add another albeit small point of failure... It is an R32 also, so i suppose all of the wiring etc may be a little tired?
Would like to know what others have done
