Duncan Finishes Second In Race 1 At Wakefield!
Gonad Man replied to Majanal's topic in New South Wales
Kel, You might want to re-think that statement. It could quite possibly work out cheaper to buy a whole new car. Well done Duncan. Great results mate. ...Ben -
Mark you are a sexy bitch! Nice turbos! Pete-that image has just undone thousands of dollars of therapy.
-
Thanks Duncan. I'm pretty happy with my effort. Howdy Bonkers! I've graduated from taking turn 8 as "flatstickfullycrossedupfacingthefarkingconcretewall" and now I'm trying to take turn 1 the same way. Seems to have worked reasonably well. I've gotta admit I was shown my way around Eastern Creek by an absolute master! Since the 1/2 day I did with you I've only done 1 other full day at Eastern Creek so maybe I was listening to your pointers? None of this sticky tyres crap either. Go the street tyres! So when are you guys coming out to Orange? Cheers, Ben

I did a supersprint at EC yesterday and managed to better my previous best by more than 3 seconds. Funny thing is the car is exactly the same as last time I was there except for rear camber pins and a decent wheel alignment. Goes to show the value of a good wheel alignment. Best time of 1:51.6 and full results are shown here: http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results....08/2005.EAST.S1 I managed to beat all other WRXs on street tyres as well as all runners on R-spec tyres as well. The only WRXs to beat me were on slicks running increased capacity (2.2 and 2.5 L engines). All in all a great day at the office! There was one VERY fast white GTR running too. Man that thing was quick!!! John was there in the very boosted Zed but judging by his times something was amiss. Anyway here's the list of specs and mods again:

What state championships Duncan? Do tell.

Nice work Duncan! Very impressive. So I guess the yellow peril made it's way out of Fatz' garage after all. I was thinking it was part of the furniture. ...Ben

My god! They succeeded in polishing the turd. PHATGTR-My old MY00 WRX with the stock TD04 and a full 3" MSR HiTech exhaust would make 1.1 bar by 2600rpm in higher gears. Fatz (NSW Forums) has driven it and could comment for an unbiased opinion. Then again he'd probably just say, "It's a bloody Hyundai piece of crap" so maybe his opinion isn't really unbiased either. (yet another) Ben

I've gotta agree the stock STi is a pretty hideous thing. Waiting for boost to come on does give you a good opportunity to make a few phone calls and catch up with paperwork though. I guess that's what happens when you've gotta homologate a turbo for Group N. On the flip side you don't have to replace it until you're upping the ante quite a bit. An exhaust and a retune makes the world of difference to boost threshold but underneath it all it's a low-compression 2l engine which is always going to be sluggish off boost. I expect that an RB25 will feel much quicker in traffic. ...Ben EDIT: Love the Commonwhore reference. My work ute has the V6 and it would make a great boat anchor. I read a thread on Street Commodores forum where they were trying to get a V6 into the 11s on a budget. Sounds like trying to polish a turd to me.
-
I hear that swapping to a single turbo from the sequential setup on the S6 RX7 saves you about 25 kg! Isn't the 2JZ sequential as well, while the 1JZ is parallel?
-
Agree with you about the sequential turbos. The B4 has the well-documented "Vally of Death". Check out a typical B4 dyno plot to see what I mean. Sequentials are bloody hard to set up and quite often when people do some serious mods they are the first thing that goes in the bin. The sequentials on the S6 RX-7 are a good example of this. I think Subaru agree as well as they chose to dump the twins and go to a single, well-sized twin-scroll turbo with the GT. If I were building a really tough engine I'd go for a 2.2 but rather than a stroked 2 litre I'd go for the 2.2 fitted to the US-spec Legacy Turbo. This thing is basically the same block as fitted to the 22B so it's fully closed-deck with very strong internals and it doesn't have the rod ratio problems which limit revs as the stroked 2L 2.2 setup does. Interesting is that these engines have got piston oil squirters but these were deleted for the 22B. ...Ben

Shane, Just about every gearbox failure I've seen or heard of involved an aftermarket clutch as the stock one is designed to slip before the gearbox goes bang. There are exceptions to this of course but they are in the minority. I would love a 2.5 but not really for the low-down torque, mainly because I could then run a big-ass turbo without too living with too much lag. Getting back on topic-I might be able to give a more informed opinion as I'm considering selling the STi and getting myself something cheaper like an R32 GTS-t or even GTR if one comes along at the right price. ...Ben
-
Geez. 20-30k thrown at it it really should be an animal. I know the US 2.5 litre short engines are a bit fragile but for that sort of dosh you can fill it with strong internals and it should be pushing 300 kW at all four easily. I agree with you that an EJ will never produce the ridiculous power outputs that a well-built RB can produce. ...Ben
-
No worries, it's all good. Just putting forward my opinion. As I said I've never really driven an R33 GTSt in anger so I didn't comment.
-
That's either a really pessimistic dyno or a very badly setup car. An STi with an exhaust and retune should produce about 180 kW at all 4 on a DD dyno in shootout mode. Even a 2.5 with a small turbo should really be producing more than 200. I know of a few that are producing over 300 ATW. Your mate should try a different tuner. It should be a heap quicker than a stocker. ...Ben

Perhaps you should re-read my post. Then maybe read it again. I think that when I said, "but in answer to your question", clearly showed that I was perceptive enough to realise you had put a question mark at the end of the sentence. It seems you might have missed that. I sincerely hope you don't rate yourself among the "more perceptive people out there." My sincerest apologies for airing an opinion that differs from yours (that would be sarcasm if you don't recognise it). You are clearly more qualified (and literate LOL) and as such I dare not disagree with you. ...Ben

I'm not sure where I stated these were the only cars I'd owned, but in answer to your question-yes mate I have. Before I bought my WRX I had an ED XR6 and before that I had a V8 XE Falcon that's still parked in the garage. I know they understeer if you don't understand throttle control. Do you disagree? I stand by my opinion that the WRX chassis is very well balanced. I did 10 or so motorkhanas in my MY00 WRX which equates to about 12 full-bore launches each day and when I sold the car at 102,000 km both the original clutch and gearbox were still in great condition. Cheers, Ben

Gag on my shaft Fatz! I found the Wakefield results. For some reason they were posted under 2006!?!Wakefield Supersprint June 2005 I'm #8 in SVD class. The rubber on the latest STis are still a road compound but they have got an aggressive outer tread pattern that stops them feathering and going off as quickly as most street tyres. They are comparable to Falken RT215s, but a little better in the wet. To be honest there's still a bit of time left in my current setup. I was dealing with brake fade (fluid boil) most of the day.

Go Chris!!!!! Great effort mate! I wan't sure if I was thinking of the right Chris but there's no mistaking that ugly mug! You keeping your clothes on these days Mark? ...Ben -
OK it's not a Skyline but I've spent plenty of time on here and I'm a bit sick of all the garbage that goes on at certain Subaru forums so why not? R-Spec rubber is not considered "street class" in the club motorsport series I run in. I guess the differentiation between R-Spec and "street rubber" (based on treadwear rating) is to keep costs down for people that can't afford to run gumballs that need replacing at very short intervals. So in this competition R-Spec street legal rubber is considered "street rubber". Thanks for clarifying. I agree with you about the 1:04 though. I'm a little sceptical and I look forward to seeing the results. ...Ben

I didn't think you need to remove the front driveshafts as on a RWD dyno these won't be turning at all therefore using no power. If you're going to turn the car off then on again it's best to leave it in gear. At least that way you've still got power steering and vacuum for the brake booster should anything unexpected happen. Cheers, Ben PS-G'day Duncan!

If anyone doesn't understand the law of diminishing returns they need to read this thread. Very educational. A GTP car can manage a 1:04 while the best these beasts can manage is a 1:08, right? Not bagging these great cars (1:08 is a fantastic time on street tyres in my opinion) it just shows the difference between power and handling. As I mentioned, no matter what the power, tyres make a huge difference and any car that can come up with a 1:08 on street tyres is doing bloody well. I'm impressed not just with the cars but especially the drivers. I'm guessing these big-HP monsters must really need to be driven with your tippy-toes, if you get my meaning. If Brian manages a 1:04 with street tyres I'll be super impressed. Are R-Spec tyres (like D01J, Kumho V700 etc) considered street tyres? I just read that most cars are running R-spec rubber. If that's the case then a 1:10 is pretty ordinary. Geez, even a Muppet like me can manage a 1:11.7 on real street tyres (not R-spec) in a lowly near-stock STi (around 170 kW ATW). I shouldn't really comment-the sight of these show pieces shaking the ground at a proper race track with turns etc would be worth the price of admission alone. I think it's great to see these cars in motion rather than on display. ...Ben

I'll come straight out and admit I've had an MY00 WRX, an RS Liberty, my wife's got a Forester GT turbo and I've got an MY02 STi. I'm definitely biased. I can't comment on the R33 GTST as I've never owned or driven one but I can comment on the MY00 WRX. For starters, anyone who describes a WRX as an understeering pig clearly cannot drive. My old WRX was one of the most adjustable, neutral and easy cars to back into a corner I've ever owned. In fact, I'd say the balance of my old car was better than my new STi. Sure it will understeer under power but trail braking into a corner, flicking it sideways and powering out should bring a smile to any performance car enthusiast's face. WRXs have got a tendency to snap-oversteer on lift-off and under a trailing brake and anyone who hasn't seen this happen has never been to the track. No shortage of WRXs spinning around. Price-wise I sold my 2000 WRX a year ago for $21k and it was still in fantastic condition. Sure they are more expensive new but this is not a valid comparison as you can't get a new GTST. The MY99/00 WRXs were the quickest standard WRX around for a few years. They have been documented as running a high 13s 1/4 by several publications. Please don't think this post is a put-down of GTSTs, it's not. I think the GTST (GTS-25T?) is a great basis for mods. I've seen what Duncan and Fatz managed to get out of Duncan's car and I'm very impressed. Duncan's car managed a 1:10 at Wakefield (now that's a REAL measure of a performance car IMHO) and it was very mildly modified. Anyway that's my 2 bob. Cheers! ...Ben

Does anyone here know McKanes Falls Rd near Lithgow? No traffic and a bloody nice short blast. Only 1 property access in the twisty bits too so not much chance of being surprised by someone pulling out in front of you. Went from Goulburn to Oberon via Taralga and Black Springs on the weekend and the run down into the Abercrombie River is great, but the hillclimb up out the other side is GOLD!!! Unfortunately there's about 5 km of dirt at both ends. ...Ben

Lateral G forces drop dramatically the moment you lose traction. Lateral g's are a result of the car's ability to push you towards the centre of the curve you are tyring to negoatiate and the moment you lose traction this force drops dramatically. If you could get more lateral acceleration from losing traction all racing drivers would be drifting. ...Ben PS-G'day Duncan.
