ok, cool. I've settled that point. Now i'm trying to figure out if that cooler I am suggesting, is going to pose an unacceptable restriction in the system, or if it's not going to handle the pressure. Inside diameter of the feed lines is 8mm and it's a '90s magna transmission cooler. -Cheers TK
-
yes, and also Aussie delivered r32 GTRs used oil coolers. 3 in fact.... wonder what size the lines are
-
so, oil pressure should be a good indicator of flow yeah? If so, I think i'll just try it out, and if I'm getting lower than normal oil pressures, I'll just abandon it and for out for a decent cooler. I'm sure an oil filter also provides a fair restriction on the system. Cooler I've chosen has been chosen specifically because it is one of the larger ones you generally find on stock cars. ---- Edit, Just to add, I used to have a cordia turbo, which came stock with an engine oil cooler, which was smaller than the one I'm using, and had smaller lines. So by that basis, I don't think the size of the lines should pose a restriction, but i'm curious on people opinions here..

hm, thanks for the advise. I'm going to take it down to a guy who owns a radiator place I know. and get some advise there. Maybe they can pressure test it to see if it will cope or something. This is just a temporary solution, but at the moment, I can't afford something decent. And I don't want to get one of the cheap ones floating around. Equipment that came stock with a car which passed ADR requirements etc. was probably built to higher standards of quality than some of the cheap crap you see on the market. So It's just a question of whether it can handle higher oil pressure. Though, I know a couple people who have been using these exact ones in other cars without any problems. As I said, i'll try and get an expert opinion and perhaps pressure test it before I go ahead.

well, whole purpose is to do it on the cheap... I'll be buying a remote filter relocation kit from http://www.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=97814 so $95 for that The transmission cooler itself was $15 $110 for a remote filter relocation kit *and* oil cooler is pretty damn cheap... I've gone out and measured the lines properly, inside diameter is actually 7mm. So are dash 10 lines 10mm inside diam? or what... Here are some pics of the cooler. It's made by Denso, and plenty of people have used them on these cars as engine oil coolers before. Actually. I have more confidence in this than I do in some of the cheap chinese/taiwan things you see floating around. But yeah, i'll see how it goes, I'll be regularly checking oil pressure and temps once it goes on. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...r/oil_cool1.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...r/oil_cool2.jpg

thanks for the link hm, I think I'll use a cover on it. I'm not having trouble with oil temps, daily driving doesn't put much stress on it, and i very rarely drive the car hard on the street for long periods. It's drifting + summer which is worrying me. So much just make up some sort of cover, and take it off when I drift or weather is hot Second question, does the size of the lines on the oil cooler matter? Is too small going to restrict oil flow? The cooler I have is a magna automatic transmission cooler (pov oil cooler of choice...) and from memory, lines have inside diameter of around 4-5mm (i'll check for sure tomorrow) Does anyone know if this will cause a problem?

Tein Ha Adjustable Suspension
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to Taso84's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
if you want to be able to adjust height properly. you need body adjustable coilovers. The spring platform adjustment, is for adjusting pre-load, which you can use to change the height, but it's not the proper way to do it. as it changes the preload on the spring. http://bag11pr000.auc.bbt.yahoo.co.jp/user...90_damper_1.jpg http://bag11pr000.auc.bbt.yahoo.co.jp/user...45_damper_2.jpg ^ the coilovers in the pics have Body adjustment and preload adjustment (notice collar on bottom aswell as under spring, this adjusts body using c-spanner) That's the proper way to adjust height without changing spring preload. but, not many coilovers have it. -
I just purchased an oil cooler, and am thinking of how to hook it all up. I was going to simply buy a remote filter relocation kit, and run one of the lines into the oil cooler. I'm wondering if I should use a thermostat. I've noticed some oil cooler kits for sale on the forums, don't use thermostats and some do. Just wondering if it would be dangerous not using a thermostat, for a car that is half street driven, half track driven.

Nitrogen Filled Tyres
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to d00dz's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
most of the benefits you get out of nitrogen filled tyres, can be achieved by using dry compressed air. Moisture content in the gas you use plays a much larger part than the gas itself. Aircraft tyres tend to use them because it's an inert gas, and reduces the risk of fires/tyre explosions. -
R32 Brakes Rda Vs Dba
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to wal's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
standard dba's are more than 100 each. from what i recall when i was changing brake rotors. I used RDA because they were cheaper, no problems at all, they work great. -
285/35/18 Rubbers On
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to Mr_G's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
agreed... i had 255's on a 10 inch wide rim, that was about right... -
i use the same oil in my r32 (penzoil 10w40 semi-synth), goes black after about 3 or 4 weeks. This is ok, it means your oil is actually working, and absorbing carbon deposits. Sometimes when going from mineral oil, to synthetic oils etc. the oil may have different additives which do a better job than your old oil. Might be a good idea to do another oil change if you're worried. But doesn't sound like there is a major problem or anything. One sign of blow-by is popping out a dipstick. do you get this problem at all? smoke could indicate a number of things. blown turbo springs to mind. Blue smoke indicates burning oil, black smoke indicates it's running rich.

Item: R32 GTR Wheels (16x8inch +30 offset 5x114.3) - Pair Item Condition: Second hand (repainted) Reason for Selling: Unneeded (need $$$!) Price and Payment Conditions: $300 for the rims, if you want the tyres that are on them, I can throw in for $100. negotiable. Pick up & payment in cash preferable. Extra Info: Have been repainted, close to standard colour, but probably not exact match. Haven't been used since I repainted them. Very light gutter rash, but otherwise, no buckles or anything like that. Tyres are bridgestone turanza er30 225/55/16 with very decent tread (see pic) Was going to use these baby's for drift (very good lightweight wheel with nice offset & width), but need cash... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...26oct/gtr_1.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...26oct/gtr_2.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...26oct/gtr_3.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...26oct/gtr_4.jpg Item: Work 15inch - Pair Item Condition: Drifted... Reason for Selling: not needed Price and Payment Conditions: $80 Pick up & payment in cash preferable. Extra Info: paint is a little flakey on inside of spokes. Has been used for drift, but no major damage or anything. 15x6.5 JJ +55 offset multi stud pattern 5x114.3 5x100 (i think) These fit ok on my R32, they just cleared the brake calipers on rear. In fact, i used a 3mm spacer just to be safe - I can throw them in. These would also suit RX7's and cars with higher offset stock, but don't think they will fit r33 or r34 without something to space them. suggest they be used for drift. The tyres on them, are more or less bald. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ct/work15_1.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ct/work15_2.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ct/work15_3.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ct/work15_4.jpg Location: Melbourne, south eastern suburbs Contact Details: PM or email tkohlman -at - bigpond.net.au

What Is Wrong With Adjustable Arms
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to Sydneykid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
well, i guess, that demonstrates you get what you pay for. Quality brands of those style suspension components are much better. Also as far as replacement rod end's go. you can pay more for teflon ones etc. probably will last longer and be stronger... but yeah, u pay alot more for them than standard ones. I guess, having a castor rod break on you is much less dangerous than an upper camber arm. -geoff that tension rod looks shocking. the width of the shell is half the width of the bolt... I'll post pics of the replacement I got from BIS. edit. here are pics (different from previous pics, the bearing i had there was wrong thread...) http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ax-replace4.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...ax-replace3.jpg I have no idea how quality compares, but it's looks heaps better than the ones you posted there... the castor rods i used, are a cheap brand, but i guess some "cheap" brands are worse than others... The bearing i posted pics of in prevous page, was from the actual supplier of those tension rods, but he sent me a right-handed thread, so couldn't use it. also a question, the ones I have have a little nipple on them, i think this is for re-lubricating them??? is it a good idea to add more oil/grease to them regularly? -
hehe, good ol' petitte. my advice. do what i did buy a daily driver, and whenever you have to drive through knox, take the daily... that area's like danger zone man. If you want some advice from a cop, goto nissansilvia.com and post there in vic section, or pm Smokey because he is a cop and gives good advice. just to add, you chose to drive a car illegally... so be prepared to suffer the consequences.

Cool, just asking. Though, i might add, that a lot of suspension I have seen straight from japan, brands that spring to mind are Tien, hks, apexi n1 etc. tend to be the cheapo coilover of choice over there. I think, partially, it depends on what you pay for. I've driven a car with 11k/9k spring rate - using proper race suspension, and compared to cheapo tien 8k/6k -- the ride was much more comfortable. So i think part of that was a better matched spring/shock - not to mention a better setup in general. Anyway, I just purchased some european suspension for my skyline, so, we'll see how it goes. Quantum coilovers with 8k/8k springs
-
could be worse.... have you seen the sort of spring rates some of the japanese D1 drivers are using?? http://maxe.ausgamers.com/d1gp/imamura_.jpg http://maxe.ausgamers.com/d1gp/maeda_.jpg http://maxe.ausgamers.com/d1gp/suenaga_.jpg 18k / 16k..... anyway, back on topic. won't different materials have different densities? If you are using the formula I think you're using, you need to use a modulus of rigidity, which is different for different materials.
-
aahhahahaha  awesome... ill have to remember that trick in the future.

Tein Ha Adjustable Suspension
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to Taso84's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
damper adjustment is done at top of the strut. *if* you have damper adjustment. on top of the centre bolt, there may be a dial, you turn this to adjust damper. If it's missing the thing, you will need an allen key to adjust it. Though, not all the tien coilovers come with damper adjustment, so you may not have it at all! Damper adjustment will make a small difference in comfort, but probably won't fix your problem. Sydney kid has a group buy on the bilstien/whitline gear, may be a better idea going for softer suspension if you're never gonna take it to the track. Anyway, try the damper adjustment first, and see if that helps. -
oops didn't read first post properly.... oh well. don't mind me
-
dispite the fact, that vn commodores have a skyline engine in them..... hmm

Do you want rims for drift?? I've tried R32 GTR wheels on rear, they fit very well, and fill the guards great. Also, Z32 rims (300zx). have to be one of my cheapo drift rim of choice. 16x7.5 They fit r32 fine. If you are interested in buying rims for drift, I some pairs you may be interested (PM me if interested) - pair z32 rims - pair r32 gtr rims - pair crappy 15's which only just clear the brakes (best to use 2mm spacer to be sure. can throw them in)
-
I have a pair of gtr wheels, but They have been repainted, and might not match genuine gtr. but colour is close. They are still the same width, offset, weight etc. colour is similar, but clear coat makes it look a bit shinier (will probably dull down a bit once you drive with them, coz the clear coat will wear down a bit from using them. I left a message on your mobile, let me know if you are interested. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/merli...heels/gtr_1.jpg
