power to weight ratio - victorian P-platers
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to r34gtt-05's topic in General Automotive Discussion
i think the fine is $165 for first offence, no demerit points. A friend just bought an SR20DET Silvia on p-plates, so i'll let you know for sure in a couple of months when he gets busted... there has been talk recently that they are proposing to make it a demerit-point-able offence, but at the moment, that's just rumour. Most insurance policies have a clause which states something like "if you're doing something illegal, we wont cover you" - so if they find out you were breaking the power restriction, i'd imagine they would refuse to cover you. Insurance companies will find any pedantic reason they can, not to pay out. -
RB20DET S14 conversion problems
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to DRFT 14's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
i would have suggested the thermostat is not opening, hence not circulating water through radiator, but if the water in the radiator is boiling, then that's not your problem. did you remember to put the engine cooling fan on? There should be a fan on front of engine, driven by engine (ie constantly on). Then there is an electric fan on passenger side of radiator. i know im stating the obvious, but sometimes these things get missed. -

I've been in the situation when a car i bought had a dodgy rwc. You're better off getting a roadworthy report done by your mechanic, before jumping to conclusions. Better to be armed with that before you accuse the mechanic who did the original roadworthy, and you might miss things, and he wont fix everything.

and, i hope you plan on putting your airfilter back on
-
lol, the reason greddy coolers are $1.5k+ are because the flow a crapload better than the pov-pack hybrid copy. if you wanna be cheap, go for the $300 one, but you'll be dissappointed.
-
well, hks gt-2530 (GT25) is a fairly common replacement for an RB20DET, that's what i'd go (daym, there was a turbo & piping kit for an rb20det on sale on yahoo japan a while ago that sold pretty cheap) it would probably be best to avoid ceramic turbo's altogether, they tend to crap themselves over about 1.0 bar. Don't know about a high-flowed one.

you could just block off where the bov goes. this is what i did, i just got a square piece of metal, drilled holes in it in the right spots, and then bolted it on. Block off the vacuum line and you'll be sweet. It won't do any damage running no bov, just drive it easy. Some people say you can do damage to the turbo without a bov, but that's yet to be proven, and S13's for example don't have a stock bov. alot of roadworthy places may be unaware that those things constitute a defect, as alot of mechanics wont be too familiar with imports, and can be some confusion over what is stock or not. My mechanic didn't pick up on a few things on my car - pedals, steering wheel (not padded & smaller than legal), air filter (oiled pod), drift handbrake button, gear shift didn't have shift pattern printed on it(yes, this is defectable), height adjustable suspension (can't have suspension that can lower car to illegal height, also suspension travel wasnt within 1/3), braided brake lines, rear tyre had a chip out of side wall most of those things are fairly minor items, but just goes to show that they do miss things, it's only human! cars early 1989 (i think march or april) and before didn't need a high mount brake light, and besides, the light could have been good when u bought it, and the globe blew later. if you suspect you received a dodgy roadworthy, have the car checked out by your mechanic. Alot of the suspension & steering components such as rubber boots & bushes are not repaired if the roadworthy is dodgy, those are long-term wear items that should have been picked up if there is anything wrong. If you call up Vicroads they can give you advise on how to handle the matter. The tester can loose his license for doing a dodgy RWC, and usually what happens is they will have to fix all the problems free of charge. Otherwise, it gets taken further and they risk loosing their license.

you probaly haven't heard of it, because you don't live in victoria :-p If you install any FMIC(or technically any mod), it has to be ADR approved, and to prove that is meets ADR's you will need an engineering certificate. This is a separate issue, the EPA has it's own regs. it gets a little confusing because there are several parties involved. Your best bet is to contact the EPA and find out what you need to get done. What they will most likely tell you, is that you can't have an aftermarket pod and cooler, regardless of whether or not both those items have engineers certs
-
in vic, it's basically an aftermarket cooler/pod (so a sidemount cooler that is larger than standard is also illegal if used with a pod) As already said, u can't get a permit in Vic, just use the stock airbox and put a good filter element in it. for more info, check out these letters http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~toan/EPAData/ all of those things are legit defects, probably a little harsh, as they are fairly minor items, but nonetheless still defectable. And if the cop wanted to be a prick, he would have made u tow the car home. Look on the bright side, they are all easy to fix. Welcome to Victoria - the police state!

Terrible Night, need urgent help
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to Aeris's topic in General Automotive Discussion
have a look everywhere througout the car, ie. in the boot around spare wheel, in map pockets, glove box, centre console. pockets behind seats etc. if you havent owned the car for long, the locknut key might still be there hidden away somewhere. vicegrips sometimes work to remove locknuts, but if the bolt holes on the wheels are sunken in, then there that probably wont work. Or maybe you can make a mould of the locknut key with something? i dunno, get some clay or some shit - worth a try If you still can't get it, you'll probably have to drill out the stud, but studs are pretty easy to replace I had this problem on a friends car but we eventually found the locknut key. First thing we did after that was remove the locknuts for good! -
need new pads help
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to NOZILR's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
If you want to use bendix ultimate, be prepared to be cleaning them rims alot. main complaint is that they leave a lot of brake dust, and also chew through rotors like there's no tomorrow. but they are good cheap race pad, which counts for something. Other common pad is rb74 (www.racebrakes.com.au) However, if u r never going to the track, then just use any old crap, just go to brakesplus or something and get what they recommend, they should be able to figure out which ones to get for a '33 for most r32 and r33 skylines, pads are db1170 on front, and db1220s on rear. but I can't confirm that for sure, coz i don't own an r33, and if you have brembo's they're different. -
Need Some Help - borrowing stock parts
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to MerlinTheHapyPig's topic in Victoria
Ok, update Fixed the bov & airfilter wasn't picked up in the roadworthy. Please, please, please, does anyone have a stock R32 gts-t exhaust they can lend me? (or one that is legal noise level) I will need it until wednesday. -
The reason why, is that rb20det's haven't been in production since 1994. And SR20DETs are still in production, of course they are being developed more. If they still bothered making rb20det's they would have VVT etc. and would provide a fairer comparison. This is why rb26's and 25s are being mentioned, because they are still in production, and also have more mods avaliable. the question itself is biased towards the sr20det, because it's still being made, and is avaliable in stock form with 20 more kilowatts and vvt, and not to mention, simply a newer engine, you should only be comparing the s13 sr20det our of curiousity, how many sr20det red top engines are making 300+kw?

Hi guys, need to ask a couple of favours. Need to borrow a couple of stock parts this week, in order to rego the car quickly (i plan on fixing everything up, but rather not have to do it right away), I'll probably only need them for less than a week if all goes well. I need a stock R32 Gts-t exhaust, it's for a 4door, don't know if they are much different - the 4dr is only about 3-4cm longer than the 2 door Also need a stock airbox, or a non-oiled pod filter, again for an R32 gts-t. (the one i have on is the foam type which is against epa regs, coz they are oiled). Also may need a crossover pipe for rb20det, with stock bov. but i may be able to just blank off the inlet for the bov and run no bov at all. Would greatly appreciate it if any of the vic guys can help me out. I can pick everything up and have it back to u guys shortly after i get rego done. please PM or email tkohlman@bigpond.net.au Cheers, -Tim

Can Red Light Cameras Give Speeding Tickets ?
MerlinTheHapyPig replied to TiNTiN's topic in Victoria
yes, and most of them these days are dual cameras. there are dual cameras on mountainhwy/wantirna rd and bornia rd/wantirna rd. So i would have thought there would be one on mountain hwy/bornia rd, but it isn't mentioned in the below site for those 2 roads specifically, but all of those roads are pretty close together. http://www.roadwatch.com.au/speedcameras.asp -

MerlinTheHapyPig replied to R33Hesh's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
it's based on factory quoted output, and does not include weight of driver. The p/w ratios you have there are what they use. Also note, that the only skyline on the vicroads list of restricted cars is the '32 GTR, because it was the only skyline released on the australian market. Most cops don't know that 33 gtst's are not legal for pplaters - though i'd imagine TMU cops would have a fair idea. As mentioned before, maybe you should have found out if you could drive it *before* buying the car. Did you have a question, or were you just whinging? You could drive it on p's, but just keep in mind if you make an insurance claim, the insurance company could say that you were driving unlicensed. as you wernt licensed to drive that particular car. The only way i can think of to get around that rule, would be to buy an R33 GTS, and put in an rb25det. -
lol, this isn't a mitsubishi forum... GTFOH don't get me started on how good the '63 is..... i'd go the RB, just coz it's cheap to replace, doesn't matter if u blow it up - a very good criteria if you're gonna drift it - sr20's aren't as bulletproof as an rb20 and also 2-3 times the cost You can't really compare the rb20det with a late model SR because they stopped making the rb20's in 1993. If you want a fair comparison, compare a VVT SR20 with a RB25DET Neo - or compare a rb20 from an r32 and an sr20 from an s13.

My first was a 1991 KR Mitsubishi Verada xi. Which i still own (as well as the skyline). First turbo car was a GSR Cordia
