  2. See, how easy was that? You could almost sell tickets......might need a bigger venue even :wassup: And all those times the missus' said we wos wasting our time on web forums, pffffft. Now with all that experience on hand, when you have that engine pulled out and swinging in the breeze it wouldn't be too hard to just lovingly loosen them there sump bolts, carefully caress the main bearing cap fastenings, and take a peak at the damage (it is the bottom end, right?) Who knows, you might end up with a much smaller job (and bill) than you initially thought

Richard, I would definitely be handing over the engine to the experts for the actual rebuild - but would be tempted to have a go at pulling it out and replacing it myself if I was in your situation. If you check out the GTR engine manual it's a pretty straight forward process, apart from the usual hand tools you only really need a bit of shed space, an engine hoist (cheap to hire, or better still borrow one) and a jack for the transmission. Always a good idea to take some pics as you go, and bag and tag everything so there's no dramas putting it back together. Much better to be spending the $2.5k you would save on some better go fast bits than be paying some mechanic's first year apprentice to do exactly the same thing IMHO. Who knows, you might find that you could save even more by pulling off all the ancillaries and just sending the bare block and head in for the rebuild. Pretty sure you could find a few of us willing to lend a hand if you needed it. Anyways, just a thought............

  6. Yeah nice ride, congrats matey! If you haven't already seen them you might want to check out the High Octane DVD series, they do up an MR2 as a project car in a few of the earlier episodes - from memory it was a yellow turbo job that gets hi flowed, fat body kit etc. Also has some interesting Skyline stuff as well, like a 326km speed run with a GTR on a narrow wet road out in the NZ boonies somewhere, and a GTS4 -> GTR project car. PM me if you want to know where to hire em from as cheapo weekly rentals....

  8. Is this the same power wire that raises/lowers the antenna when the stereo is switched on? Or is there a separate wire for the signal booster?

  10. Leigh, Who did you order the Kings through? I was going to try and get out to Inline at Qbn or Revell at Tuggers, but I guess most suspension shops could order them in? BTW - I have some spring compressors you are welcome to borrow if you plan on doing your own......
  11. Recently got some 18" rims and tyres put on my R33 S2, and now would really like the car to sit about an inch or so lower. I was thinking about putting some lowered coils on the factory shocks, but I know all the suspension places tell you that you MUST fit matching shocks or you will surely go to hell for all eternity. Interested to hear from any SAUers who have just changed the coils and kept the factory shocks. What sort of springs would you recommend, and how do you find the ride is with just the shorter coils? Did you have any issues with wheel alignment? The car is only street driven, and I may upgrade the shocks at a later date, but right now things like a decent exhaust and FMIC are more of a priority. oops - just realised I probably posted this on the wrong forum. Can somebody move it to the Suspension section?
  12. Sounds like an interesting paint job....got any pics? Bit surprised whoever supplied the custom paint/job didn't tell you exactly how to take care of it (and flog you some products in the process). BTW - I only wash my car about once a month, and give it a going over with Quik Detail and a mitt once a week. Takes about 10 - 15 minutes including rims.

Please, please, please don't ever wipe your car with a dry cloth/mitt whatever - no matter who makes it, or what it's made of (including super duper micro fibres), it will scratch your paint as the dirt particles get dragged across it. The basic rule is - if the car is visibly dirty wash it, otherwise if it's just got a light coating of dust a dry wash is ok but at least use a lubricant spray like Meguires Quik Detail, Final Inspection etc. Meguires had a special pack out around xmas that had a bottle of Quik Detail and a microfibre cloth for < $20, which was very good value. I think Autopro had them, not sure who else.
  14. Suggest you have a chat to Paul at Squig's Welding in Fyshwick - he'll tell you straight up if it can be welded and likely to last, or if you're better off replacing it. Probably best if you can show him the damage. Tell him JD sent ya!

  17. I actually gave Richard 2 cd's with copies of everything I had on them (just realised that I left the R33 manual off tho, so Richard let me know if you want that too). You might want to check with him as to who the second copy was for.....
  18. Just wondering if anybody has successfully fitted bonnet dampers to replace the standard steel rod that is used to prop up the bonnet, preferably on an R33? If so, where did you get them? How hard to fit? Some pics would be spectacular!

Was planning a drive up to the car festival at Rosehill this weekend, but have heard a few negative comments about the lack/quality of machinery on display and the small number of trade exhibitors compared to the Summernats. Not all that keen on wandering through a few rows of commodores/toranas and not much else, but would probably still go if there was likely to be a reasonable range of other stuff to look at (and no, I don't mean t*ts). Anyone care to comment?

  21. Great idea Richard. If someone wants to give me a 34 GTR I would even let them have my 33 for free, then we just need Mr Nissan to send us a shiny new 35.... PS - gee some people get to go home early :wassup:

Ummm, I think Mivec is actually right - when I got my R33 registered in the ACT the motor registry people told me that I could get a mechanical inspection done at any authorised inspection station, but only Dickson could do the "identity check" which is required when transferring a privately owned vehicle from another state. I think Dickson used to do all import mech inspections, but that changed some time ago. I decided to kill two birds with one stone and get both done the same day at Dickson, but in hindsight if I hadn't been doing the id check would have definitely gone elsewhere for the normal inspection.

I knew somebody would bite :wassup: - nuthin wrong with a stocker, but those of us who have already quietly suffered years of driving bloody falcons, camrys etc before the missus finally caved in and let us buy a decent ride will understand why you don't buy a Skyline and leave it standard. Dunno bout the bleed valve tho if that's what your planning on doing - I was warned not to fiddle around with the boost too much without at least a decent FMIC. PS - where did you get your exhaust done? That's next on my list....
  24. Yeh, welcome buddy. I'm relatively new to SAU as well, and now that the Tempe boys have hooked me up with some shiny new wheels I should be able to overcome the embarassment of having a totally stock 'line, and actually turn up to a cruise or two.
