$335 all up for replacing the ignition computer, no3 coilpack and dyno testing.

HOORAAY!!! Finally got my R32 fixed!! Turns out the problem was a faulty ignitor module as a few people have mentioned here. Also had a faulty no3 coilpack. Gave the car a good run tonight and no problems so far woohoo! They had the car on the Dyno and I was told it was making about 125kw at the rear wheels now and is running up to 10psi boost (without a boost controller) due to the KnN Pod filter and 2.5 inch exhaust system, so overall I am very happy. Its great to have the beast back on the road. Thanks to all who helped. Special thanks to Dalton Automotive in Geelong and Phil from Leopold. Hope this helps some of you other guys. Cheers, Jason

Just to add. When I checked the coils and plugs they all looked fine. No signs of wear on any of the plugs or the coils. The plugs were gapped to .8mm and are new platinum ngks. Anyhow I covered the coils at the spot suggested with that Permatex High temp silicone Gasket maker. The problem is still there and seems to happen more often when the engine is warmed up or on a hot day. I priced an ignitor module from JMS in Adelaide. They are charging $150 plus postage. I think I will wait though until I know for sure what is causing it. The money is tight at the moment as we have just built a house and have blown the budget bigtime, plus all the XMAS bills etc etc., so unfortunately it may have to wait until after Xmas. Cheers, Jason.

Hey thats great news that ya solved the problem. I siliconed the coils and it seemed a little smoother the next time I started the car, but then the problem reappeared pretty much straight away!. I don't know if I should just take a punt on the igniter and just buy a new one or take it back to the auto elec to isolate the problem. The stupid thing is the lat 2 times I had the car in they couldn't get it to misfire. Today I picked up some tickets in town to the Velvet Revolver concert (YEAH ROCK ON SLASH!!! ) and all the way back it was misfiring. Even booting the accelator couldn't get rid of it. Anyone in the Geelong area got an R32 that they can try testing their ignitor with mine? Cheers, Jason.

$212 each one.... x 6 = $1272 thats quite alot... Still got the misfire. Haven't taken it back to the auto electrician yet as he wanst the car for a day or so he can check the problem when it occurs. I thought I may as well try an few things myself before pay out the $$$. I have bought some High temp Permatex silicone RTV gasket maker and covered the coils at the front below the metal down to the rubber boot as some of the guys here have suggested. WIll see how that goes in about 24hrs when it bonds properly. Heres hoping...

I still haven't had a chance yet to get in and check tthe coil packs yet or even check the spark plug gaps. The mechanic said only one of the coils was corroded which he said he cleaned so hopefully it is only that one that is playing up. Anyone know where to get a new or second hand coil pack at a reasonable price? I priced a new one from our local nissan dealer and it was $212!! The missus will hit the roof if I had to fork out for a new set at that price!! Cheers, Jason.

One other thing I have been wondering.....is it safe to drive around with it misfiring?? IE: Am i doing any permanent engine damage?? The car has just started misfiring alot more often today (nearly all the time) so I will be taking it back to the auto electrician tomorrow most likely if I can get it to keep playing up. Also bought some tools from the local super cheap auto so I will check the plug gaps and coils tonight if i get time . Thanks for all the help guys.. will keep yas posted

Yeah it started doing it again today. This time the car was cold. I just turned it on and as it was idling it started to misfire and lose power again. I couldn't even get rid of it all the way home no matter how many times i floored the accelerator. Then I left it for about 20 minutes, started it again and it was fine...until the next time. I can't believe the mechanic and the auto electrician haven't pinpointed the coils. I think I might have to just bite the bullet and get a new coil pack. Do you have to replace them all or can ya do the one that is faulty only?
-
Well the saga continues.... The guys at the auto electricians couldn't find anything wrong after testing it for a whole day, which included road testing it and running it hooked up to a computer for about 1/2 an hr. Bizarre. At least the only charged me $33 considering how much time they spent on it. Anyhow the guy said to keep driving it and bring it back in when it starts to happen more often... Whats the bet it starts playing up on the way home.... Will drive it a bit more and see what happens then try and look at some of your other suggestions.. Just makes it hard when ya don't have the parts to swap out and test. CHeers, Jason.

Hmm I suggested that to my mechanic but he told me the car would be misfiring nearly all the time if that was the problem? Was yours misfiring alot or just every now and then?
-
>So, check the current, check the sparks for excessive carbon and replace the ?>problem because it will only get worse. >Hope i could help Yeah its very strange. I have the car with an auto electrician today. So far he reckons he has checked all the electricals, ecu, afm etc and hasn't been able to find anything. He is going to give it a drive later and see if he can make the problem occur. It sucks when you have these sort of obscure problems. I will mention what you guys have suggested and let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the help so far. Jason.

Just to add this problem seems to happens mostly when the car is at low revs or has just started. IE: today I was just cruising along doing about 80kmh going down a slight hill and all of a sudden it starts misfiring... I hit the accelerator hard and it comes good. Will be good to see what you come up with. I'm still leaning towards a dodgy AFM but I'm still not sure until I get everything else checked. Its a bit disconcerting not knowing if the car is going to lose power especially if you are in the middle of a busy intersection of something.

Hey guys, my 92 R32 GTS-t has recently started misfiring intermittently. It can happen at any time and can usually be fixed by accelerating hard. Anyhow I just had my mechanic look at it and he has done the following: -Replaced spark plugs -Checked all the coils. Cleaned a faulty coil. (Said it was corroded a bit on one of the contacts, but said its fine now) - Checked and cleaned the air flow meter contacts Anyhow the car is running alot smoother, but a few days later the problem started up again. It loses power and sounds like a wrx... HE told me to get it checked by an auto electrician. He thinks it may be something to do with the engine management?? Any ideas?? This is a pain in the $%#... Cheers, Jason.
