  1. I did some research about fixing the fan amp - turns out they're pretty simple devices, just a thermal protection diode and a darlington transistor. I couldn't bear paying $150+ for another one when I'm good with a soldering iron, so here's a guide on how to fix the issue: take off the glovebox (all the screws are obvious) and take out the metal bracket in the center here. Pry the unit apart and check the resistance of the 2nd and 3rd leg of the transistor - if you get any value other than infinite/open circuit, you need a new one. Ebay it, its long obsolete. as you can see, I'm only getting 3 ohms with no power from collector to emitter = transistor is f**ked. If your fan never runs, its probably because the thermal protection diode is cooked. Mine was fine though. R33+ most likely went to a MOSFET which is what nissan *should* have used on the R32s as well - guess an old guy designed this fan amp, darlingtons were oldschool even in 1989!
  2. can confirm the above - I've got a MAC in front of me and blew thru the ports energized and de-energized to make certain.
  3. so I bought a set of japan-rebuilt stockers - the usual "12 point nut=ceramic, 6 point nut=metal" wheel rule may not apply in this case - and I can't seem to google image a good macro shot of the ceramic wheels to really identify, so what do you think? there looks like some slight casting flash that points to metal, but then again I don't know how they made the ceramic wheels either. my first instinct was check the electrical resistance, even inconel will have a much lower resistance than any kind of ceramic, but I can't get a resistance reading on my multimeter. also the wastegate port is cracked - not to the turbine wheel, but it definitely goes through the whole housing. I'm used to seeing some cracking on IHI subaru turbos but I didn't think garretts had the same issue
  4. small update on this, my car was missing the second 15A blower motor fuse out the fusebox (not even blown, just straight missing) and replacing that got my fan speed 4 back, but now it only seems to either give me speed 3 or speed 4.
  5. Technical Service Bulletin, I'm not sure what they call them in Aus/NZ but they're essentially a factory notice of a mistake or problem and the procedure to fix the issue if a car comes in with those symptoms for warranty/service
  6. a quick FAST lookup shows it as key 27177, PN 27761-01U00, for anyone in the future that stumbles upon this
  7. after reading through the service manual, it does appear to use a computer-controlled fan motor amp as the R33 does - not something I'd expect for a car that debuted in 1989! a shorted or stuck relay in that unit would explain the constant fan power, I'll have to dick around with it when I get a chance. I wish they'd provide pin to pin resistances to check it easily without having to rig up a test setup, but not everything can be as easy as a mid-90s Honda
  8. sound like a card in a bicycle spoke? maybe the axle cup lube TSB? http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/baddad1/2009-10-20_020757_ITB05-002b.pdf
  9. Just picked up my R32 from the port on friday, and it's got a strange issue - it came with a climate control unit where the screen didn't work so I wasn't bothered by the fan always running. But now I've replaced the unit, and the fan just runs continuously; it changes speed correctly, and the mode actuators all work to change the output locations. The ambient temperature sensor works too, but it seems like hitting the off button just turns the screen off - the fan stays on as long as the key is in ACC or ON no matter what I do am I missing something or is there something wrong? a search turned up a lot of thread about AC not working, blend door actuator problems, sensor faults, etc. but nothing like what I'm seeing.
  10. I'm guessing the info provided was "when did you buy it?" oh, 2 years ago? 1 year warranty don't bother
  11. you welded stainless to mild? why bother using stainless at all? looks good besides that
  12. I did, two days later. it's probably sitting next to yours on the Hoegh St. Pete right now!
  13. I bid on that car! I almost won it too - bid 13,000 yen less than it sold for. glad to see it found a good home and those records that had me drooling are the real deal.
  14. how much to ship the climate control module to the states?
  15. figured I'd post in here, since I haven't got much else to post about since my R32 GT-R doesn't land for another month, but I'm in PA near Philadelphia. I haven't seen any R32s around here besides the odd (probably illegally imported) R33/R34s at auto shows, and Doug DeMuro's R32 at a modern classics exhibit at a local museum known about GT-Rs for awhile and always wanted one, so I bought one! I'm hoping the parts become more available here since almost everything has to come in from AUS, the UK or maybe Canada, nothing like the Hondas I'm used to where I can buy ARP rodbolts at the local pepboys
  16. yeah, I'm surprised by that - beautiful intake port shape and geometry and then a hot garbage exhaust port.
  17. My 90 GTR has a similar issue - I can't seem to find any R32 climate control units for sale on ebay presently; I'm about to buy an R33 unit and figure out if it works once and for all (unless someone can confirm either way beforehand!)
