Schumacher 'can be beaten' By Mike Duffy February 1, 2005 AUSTRALIA's newest front-line Formula One pilot Mark Webber - just one month away from making his debut for Williams-BMW in the Melbourne Grand Prix - said last night: "I really feel we can beat Michael Schumacher and Ferrari. Pole position ... Webber. "It's going to be very, very tough - but it can be done. "Michael is a fantastic driver ... Ferrari is a fantastic team. "He is seven times world champion, a superstar legend of our sport. "He is arguably one of the greatest sportsman that ever lived. But I am not overpowered by his stature and I believe I can prove myself and beat him fair and square. "I want to win races. And I would love to win in Melbourne." Queanbeyan-born and raised Webber, 28, has been snapped up as No.1 driver by Williams after cutting his teeth in F1 with Minardi and Jaguar. This gives Webber the chance to become Australia's next F1 world champion - 25 years after Alan Jones won his crown with Williams in 1980. Webber - F1's Rookie of the Year in his debut year - made time in his whirlwind new world of preparing for his chance of a lifetime to talk to Australian motoring journalists, in Valencia to see the 2005 Williams-BMW unveiled to world media. Yesterday Williams announced German Nick Heidfeld as Webber's teammate for 2005 ahead of Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia who will remain as a test driver. Heidfeld crosses from Jordan and completes a strong if relatively inexperienced team to do battle with the all-conquering Ferrari. "It's great just being out there competing with Michael [schumacher]," Webber said. "It's like playing cricket with Don Bradman - everyone wanted to bowl the Don, everyone wants to beat Michael. "I know what level I have to go to beat Ferrari. It's going to have to be an incredibly high level. "But there will be races in which things don't happen for him and they really happen for me. "It's a great opportunity for me to come to Williams. It's a tremendously successful team. I'm very privileged to drive for them. "I'm proud to be driving for Australia and making my debut for Williams-BMW in Melbourne. "Every day I have to pinch myself I am in this situation. I have not had a podium finish yet. Hopefully, that will come in Melbourne. "Williams has been at the top before. They know how to do it. And I want to be part of their return to success. "We are aiming at winning as many races as possible - we are not putting the hours in to finish in third spot. "But you have to be realistic. You can't win every race." The Daily Telegraph Webber 'mirrors the greats' From correspondents in Valencia February 1, 2005 TEAM boss Frank Williams says Australian Mark Webber already reminds him of Formula One greats Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost. Even though the 28-year-old has not yet raced for the BMW-powered Williams team – he makes his debut in Melbourne on March 6 – Webber had his new employer singing his praises again at the launch of the new FW27 car overnight. "He's very focused, super fit and a bit like someone else in a red car (Ferrari's seven times champion Michael Schumacher) who is mentally fully involved seven days a week – and that we like," said Williams. "He is the antithesis of Alan Jones and a bit like Mansell and Prost mixed together, you know," he added. "He has immense determination, like Mansell, and is always thinking, like Prost." Australian Jones was Williams' first world champion, in 1980, and was known for his forthright views and uncompromising approach to racing. To many, he remains the ideal Williams driver as well as being Australia's last race winner. The hard-charging Mansell ran away with the 1992 title at Williams while French ace Prost captured his fourth title with them in 1993. Webber is also direct, telling it like he sees it, but in a very different mould to the drivers of old. As well as being a fitness fanatic, he is a determined team player who spends hours in the factory. The Australian is also acutely aware that he has yet to deliver anything in Formula One terms. His fifth place for Minardi on his debut in Melbourne in 2002 remains the highest placing of his Formula One career, despite two years with Jaguar, whereas new teammate Nick Heidfeld has a podium finish to his credit. "I certainly haven't proved a great deal in F1," said Webber. "I haven't achieved as much in F1 as Nick has. "Testing is one thing, racing's another...I still have a lot more to do yet." The Australian shrugged off any suggestion that, just because he had been signed first, he would be the team's lead driver and said he hopes to learn a lot with the former champion. "I'm spoilt for the people I'm working with," he said. "I'm just rapt with the guys...that's incredible for me. I'm in a very lucky situation and I'm looking forward to making the most of it. "When you come to a team with someone like Frank and Patrick (Head) running it you have to take in what they tell you, they are like fathers for you. They are very respected people and legends in the sport," he said. "I want to learn off them and try to achieve good things with the whole team." Reuters Williams vows no more mistakes From correspondents in Valencia February 1, 2005 WILLIAMS launched its 2005 Formula One car overnight with new drivers and a steely determination not to repeat last year's mistakes. "We want to move back into the winning lane," said Frank Williams, whose BMW-powered team finished a disappointing fourth overall last year after a troubled start with the ill-fated "walrus-nosed" FW26. "The mistakes of 2004 must not happen again. We must implement the new regulations to our best advantage and be completely with it when it comes down to it." BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen added: "For four years we surpassed our targets. Then in 2004 we found ourselves in a trough, failing to meet our expectations for the first time. "We now aim to accumulate successes once more with renewed strength." Williams, which was last world champion in 1997 with Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, won the last race of 2004 in Brazil through Juan Pablo Montoya. But both the Colombian and his German teammate Ralf Schumacher were disqualified in Canada for technical reasons, and Montoya was also ruled out of the US Grand Prix, where his teammate crashed heavily. While champion Ferrari, in a class of its own following 15 wins in 18 races last year, starts the season on March 6 with an unchanged lineup, both Montoya and Ralf have moved on. Williams now looks to Australian Mark Webber and Germany's Nick Heidfeld, two drivers who have yet to win a race, to get back into championship contention. Only Heidfeld, announced by the team after a decision yetserday, has stepped on to the podium before, while Webber's best performance remains fifth place on his debut for Minardi in 2002. Heidfeld, 27, has 84 grands prix under his belt, with a third place for Sauber in Brazil in 2001, while the 28-year-old Webber has 50 starts with Minardi and Jaguar. "I have every confidence that our drivers will be a major catalyst this season," said Williams said. "Not only will they be taking every opportunity to demonstrate that our decisions to employ them were well placed, but also you cannot underestimate the incentive it provides to everyone in the company, and at the trackside, to be working with new faces." The new car reflects rule changes introduced this season, with changes to the aerodynamics leading to a higher front wing and the rear wing moved forwards. Williams, with smaller side-pods and returning to a single-keel design, was their lightest yet. "While reducing weight, a lot of attention has been placed on reliability, in particular the gearbox," said technical director Sam Michael. "The FW27 gearbox has been running on the track since November 2004 with no major problems and any issues we had with last season's gearbox have been resolved." Reuters

ARU to consult over Tsunami match February 1, 2005 THE Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said today it would need to consult with the three Super 12 provinces on player availability for a southern hemisphere v northern hemisphere match at Twickenham on March 5. The International Rugby Board (TRB) announced overnight the date and location of a Rugby Aid match, which will raise funds for Tsunami relief, but it remains to be seen whether top level players from both hemispheres will be available for the encounter. ARU managing director Gary Flowers said today the match fell on a weekend when all three Australian teams were involved in Super 12 games. "Clearly our preference was for a June/July fixture, but the March date has been set and we have to work from that." "Our provincial unions have already made significant contributions to Tsunami relief but I am confident that Australian rugby broadly can make a further contribution. The March 5 date is not ideal, so we need to work through the issues with the unions and the players,'' he said in a statement. Flowers said that it's possible Australian players currently contracted to overseas clubs in Europe and Japan may also be involved. "There are a number of options. We have spoken to the prospective coach (former Wallaby mentor) Rod Macqueen and have offered him whatever assistance he needs. There are also doubts over the availability of European rugby's leading players as the game takes place a week before the fourth round of matches in the Six Nations tournament. AAP bloody england i was so looking forward 2 going 2 it in Sydney. now i have to settle with watching it on tv.

Twickenham hosts tsunami game From correspondents in London February 1, 2005 TWICKENHAM will host the IRB Rugby Aid match between teams from the northern and southern hemispheres on Saturday, March 5. And the International Rugby Board is hoping to raise between £3 to £4 million ($7-$8m). IRB chairman Dr Syd Millar said overnight: "The IRB is delighted that the international rugby community has come together to support this very worthwhile cause. "This is highlighted by major unions agreeing to release players for the match that will be played between a Northern Hemisphere XV and a Southern Hemisphere XV at Twickenham. "The IRB is very grateful to the RFU for providing Twickenham as the venue, the Six Nations Committee for agreeing to the scheduling of the match within the RBS Six Nations Championship and Southern Hemisphere countries involved in the Super 12 tournament for supporting the match. "It is also very gratifying that clubs and players from around the world have throw their full support behind the match. "The proceeds from the match will go to the IRBs humanitarian partner, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to support their vital work in affected areas following the devastating Tsunami on Boxing Day," added Dr Millar. Just how many of European rugby's leading stars feature in a match which takes place a week before the fourth round of matches in the Six Nations remains to be seen. But Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron remains confident the game can still raise substantial funds. "On behalf of the RFU we are honoured to have been asked by the IRB to host this unique game for such a worthwhile cause," he said. "Everyone was touched by the tragic events in the Indian Ocean and its essential that as much money as possible is raised to help the relief effort. "Our aim is to deliver three to four million pounds to the fund by providing the stadium free of charge and donating all the match day profits from ticket sales, TV rights, sponsorship, hospitality, bar and Rugby Store to the fund." Howard Thomas, chief executive of Premier Rugby Ltd, the umbrella body for England's top-flight clubs, said: "Premier Rugby will be providing the players required from England for the game and were delighted that we can help such a worthwhile cause. "I would encourage all sports fans to buy a ticket. By doing so they will be helping to raise vital revenue for the victims of the tsunami." Damian Hopley, chief executive of the Professional Rugby Players Association, added: "This is a tremendous opportunity for the players to have a significant impact in helping victims of the tsunami disaster. "None of the players taking part from the Premiership will be accepting any match fees and we will announce the names of those taking part, with the RFU and PRL in due course," he added. While the cat's away A woman is in bed with her lover, who also happens to be her husband's best friend. They make love for hours and, afterwards, while they're just lying there, the phone rings. Since it is the woman's house, she picks up the receiver. The best friend listens, only hearing her side of the conversation: "Hello? Oh, hi.... I'm so glad that you called.... Really? That's wonderful.... Well, I'm happy to hear you're having such a great time.... Oh, that sounds terrific.... Thanks. Okay. Bye bye." She hangs up the telephone and her lover asks, "Who was that?" Condom Size Tester A guy goes into a drugstore to buy condoms. "What size?" asks the clerk. "Gee, I don't know." "Go see Sophie in aisle 4." He goes over to see Sophie, who grabs him in the crotch, and yells, "Medium!" The guy is mortified! He hurries over to pay and leaves quickly. Another guy comes in to buy condoms, and gets sent to Sophie in aisle 4. Sophie grabs him and yells, "Large!" The guy struts over to the register, pays, and leaves. A high school kid comes in to buy condoms. "What size?" The kid embarassedly says "I've never done this before. I don't know what size." The clerk sends him over to Sophie in aisle 4. She grabs him and yells "Clean up in aisle 4!" Breaking the Law, Breaking the Law A bank robber was running from the law. The police were on his tail and he had nowhere to go so he went into a church. A priest started to talk to him and just as he was asking him why he stole the money the robber heard sirens. He shot the priest and moments later then the police shot the robber. Somehow there was a mix up; the robber went to heaven and the priest went to hell. Luckily, they found the mistake and when they were changing places, they both met in the middle. The priest said to him, "I cant wait until I meet the Virgin Mary!" The robber said, "She's not a virgin anymore."

Are You Ready for Children? Are you considering having children? To determine whether you are truly prepared for the experience, we suggest you take this set of simple tests... MESS TEST: Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Now rub your hands in the wet flower bed and rub on the walls. Cover the stains with crayons. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer. TOY TEST: Obtain a 55-gallon box of Legos. (If Legos are not available, you may substitute roofing tacks or broken bottles.) Have a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen. Do not scream (this could wake a child at night). GROCERY STORE TEST: Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop at the grocery store. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage. DRESSING TEST: Obtain one large, unhappy, live octopus. Stuff into a small net bag making sure that all arms stay inside. FEEDING TEST: Obtain a large plastic milk jug. Fill halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a stout cord. Start the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal (such as Fruit Loops or Cheerios) into the mouth of the jug while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor. NIGHT TEST: Prepare by obtaining a small cloth bag and fill it with 8 to 12 pounds of sand. Soak it thoroughly in water. At 8:00 PM begin to waltz and hum with the bag until 9:00 PM. Lay down your bag and set your alarm for 10:00 PM. Get up, pick up your bag, and sing every song you have ever heard. Make up about a dozen more and sing these too until 4:00 AM. Set alarm for 5:00 AM. Get up and make breakfast. Keep this up for five years. Look cheerful. PHYSICAL TEST (WOMEN) Obtain a large beanbag chair and attach it to the front of your clothes. Leave it there for 9 months. Now remove 10% of the beans. PHYSICAL TEST (MEN): Go to the nearest drug store. Set your wallet on the counter. Ask the clerk to help himself. Now proceed to the nearest food store. Go to the head office and arrange for your paycheck to be directly deposited to the store. Purchase a newspaper. Go home and read it quietly for the last time. FINAL ASSIGNMENT: Find a couple who already have a small child. Lecture them on how they can improve their discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training, and child's table manners. Suggest many ways they can improve. Emphasize to them that they should never allow their children to run riot. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you will have all the answers. Jock vs. Nerd $ Michael Jordan having "retired," with $40 million in endorsements, makes $178,100 a day, working or not. $ If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head. $ If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550 while he's there. $ If he decides to have a 5 minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it. $ He makes $7,415/hr more than minimum wage. $ He'll make $3,710 while watching each episode of Friends. $ If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him a whole 12 hours. $ If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would have to do it at the rate of $2.00 every second. $ He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be reimbursed $33,390 for that round. $ Assuming he puts the federal maximum of 15% of his income into a tax deferred account (401k), his contributions will hit the federal cap of $9500 at 8:30 a.m. on January 1st. $ If you were given a penny for every 10 dollars he made, you 'd be living comfortably at $65,000 a year. $ He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100 meter dash in the Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon. $ While the common person is spending about $20 for a meal in his trendy Chicago restaurant, he'll pull in about $5600. $ This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past presidents for all of their terms combined. Amazing isn't it? However... $ If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 450 years, he'll still have less than Bill Gates has today. $$$ Game over. Nerd wins. The Birds and the Bees A father asked his son, Little Johnny, if he knew about the birds and the bees. "I don't want to know!" Little Johnny said, bursting into tears. Confused, his father asked Little Johnny what was wrong. "Oh Pop," Johnny sobbed, "For me there was no Santa Claus at age six, no Easter Bunny at seven, and no Tooth Fairy at eight. And if you're telling me now that grownups don't really have sex, I've got nothing left to believe in!" Intelligent Life? Aliens from Somewhere-Out-There just landed on Earth. The Captain and First Mate step out and says: "Creatures of the third planet... erm, we have come from Somewhere-Out-There, and we wish to talk to your leader." No one moves or makes a sound. The First Mate says: "Perhaps they are afraid of us." The Captain nods and says again in a friendlier voice: "Please, we mean no harm, just let us speak to your leader." Nothing happens. "We mean no harm, we have come in peace." Again nothing happens. Growing impatient the First Mate says: "If you will not take us to your leader, we will have to take one of you on board our ship for examination!" When no one makes a move, the Captain pulls out a big laser gun and shouts: "OK, THAT'S IT, FIRST MATE, TAKE THE ONE ON THE END! CUT HIM AWAY FROM THE EARTH HE LOVES SO MUCH!" Some blocks away, two police men sit in their car when they see the light from the laser. "Omigod! Did you see that," the first policeman says to the other. They drive to where they saw the light and stop, scratching their heads. "Looks like it's been cut off neatly," the first one says. "Yeah, but why? They'd only get a few dimes out of it." They look around the spot in wonder. And the second says: "Why would anybody want to steal a parking meter?" Good Sport At one point during a game, the coach said to one of his young players, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative. "Do you understand that what matters is whether we win together as a team?" The little boy nodded yes. "So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you're out at first, you don't argue or curse or attack the umpire. Do you understand all that?" Again the little boy nodded. "Good," said the coach, "now go over there and explain it to your mother."

Tahs' back-row boom By Rupert Guinness January 27, 2005 WALLABY star Phil Waugh claims the Waratahs' back-row will be more consistent this season, with seven players competing for the three spots. The NSW No.7 says the talent pool will ensure a strong back-row for their first Super 12 match against the Chiefs in Sydney on February 25. "The challenge is in front of the guys," said Waugh. "Once the season starts it's a matter of playing consistently. " That is something, as a team, we have lacked." Waugh includes himself in that criticism, despite his 56 NSW caps (52 in Super 12) and 33 Wallaby Test caps. "As soon as you start thinking you've got your position sewn up, that's when you've got problems," say Waugh, who now has Randwick's Lei Tomiki pressing him for selection. Tomiki, 21, has six NSW caps (five in Super 12) and enjoyed a terrific club season last year. "He is a very strong guy," says Waugh of the 183cm and 99kg flanker. "He is quite fast and good at the ruck, a good guy to have pushing me." Four players are competing for the No.6 spot - Rocky Elsom (Randwick), fit after an injury-marred 2004, Wallaby Stephen Hoiles (Randwick) and newcomers Wycliff Palu (Warringah) and Dwayne Haare (Randwick) - while Wallaby David Lyons will start in the No.8 spot. "Dave's an extremely experienced guy now, a hell of a good player," said Waugh of the 33-Test forward. "He'll only get better. He's the sort of guy who takes others forward with him. We hope we again get that from him." But Hoiles and Palu are both fine No.8s, if Lyons' form dips. Hoiles, 23, won four Super 12 caps for NSW last year. And he was a revelation on last year's Wallabies tour, returning with two Tests caps off the bench against Scotland and England. * RUGBY will continue its bid to push into western Sydney tomorrow with a free skills day for children aged 4-11 at the Grantham Reserve, Seven Hills, from 9am to 11.30am. It is being run by Blacktown Junior Rugby Union club and NSW Rugby, and several Waratahs stars will attend. The Daily Telegraph
