In the radiator pipe to the right of the coolant reservoir

I have just installed a water temperature gauge in my 2003 v35 and when I turn the engine on and let it get up to temperature the gauge continues to go up to 120° even though the factory dash gauge stays in the middle. is this a dodgy aftermarket gauge or is the engine overheating and not displaying it?
