Bad Walbro 255 or something else?
GoHashiriya replied to Dustin Frazee's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
I had some weird hesitation issues after installing my Walbro 255, I have been meaning to try it with a 12v supply but just haven't gotten around to it. I've since returned it to the stock pump as the pump wasn't the cause of my issues in the first place anyway. I'm interested to know how your situation goes. -
I found, with the help of @tsuokun, that the hazard flash was only a feature on S2 R34s, it can be retrofitted to S1 but the Nissan/Altia components appear to be discontinued. It's possible to use an aftermarket kit which is apparently popular here. Tsuokun mentioned the differentiation of pulses for unlocking/locking, that's why there's a need to tap the hazards. So I've basically just gone and got an aftermarket retrofit kit for it. In hindsight, yeah you're probably right. But a more sophisticated alarm would be more difficult for me to install, one would think. Plus I would like to get something in the car ASAP. Cheers

Hi all, Owing to a recent attempted break-in to my R34, I'm trying to install an alarm. I should stress that I have never done this before, I'm relatively mechanically inclined; electronics... well, I've done some basic things with relays and switches before. Why am I not going to a shop to do this? Well other than it being difficult because I live in Japan and have few contacts, I would quite like to set this up for the learning experience. When I ship this car back to the UK I will have to install a UK-compliant alarm, so would like to know how to reverse the installation. I'm going to be a bit withholding on the information regarding some specifics, as, well, this is a public forum. I'm so far just labelling everything and reading through the manual, and the first thing I have noticed as a potential problem area is as follows: Connect the alarm defeat wire to a system that activates when the car is unlocked, i.e. hazard lights. So, the skyline seems to do nothing when unlocking the car from the inside, apart from the obvious of powering the lock motor. I do hear a relay click inside the car when unlocking/locking. Is anyone aware of the systems that are powered when unlocking using the factory remote?

I would buy this, except, if that really were the case, they should know better than to snoop first ask questions later. Especially given the sensitivity of car theft of 90's shitboxes in Japan right now. I do have one friend that backs your perspective but a significant amount that think they're up to no good. They'll find out next time, although, I need to put together a strategy for taking out multiple people at once as subtly as possible. Are flashbangs legal in Japan? Be grateful you are able to read the TCs for your insurance. Yeah I'm working on that at the moment. I'm going to get an alarm installed shortly, as I believe the R34 has nothing. Towaway theft and them knowing where I live is one of the major concerns. Police claim they can arrive at my house in 5 mins. The station is close and I've since added them to my contacts. Prior to this I was actually planning to move house, and as I already prioritise parking, I'm going to have to emphasise this more. However, we're still a little ways off. If I go out of town I'm going to speak with the building manager at my office to see if I can use the tower (tokyo drift-type) parking there.

Yeah, JP is no different to anywhere else, except because car theft is more rare/only now becoming more common. due to this, the local population are easier, unexpecting targets. An annoying thing is, car alarms (plus installation) here cost about twice as much as the UK. So If i get a shop to install one, it'll be redundant when I ship the car back. In the UK most insurance cos require a CAT 5 alarm classification where the JP ones don't meet that standard. All options are on the table at the moment, including paying someone to track them down.

Hi all, As title says, caught a couple blokes trying to rob my car yesterday and confronted them. Captured them scoping the car out on my security camera, one of them came to the door and it went down as follows: There I am working from home, which I don't often do, when a (South Asian-lookin') guy knocks on my door with some odd questions: Car Thief A: "Konnichiwa" Me: "Hello" Car Thief A: "Would you like to sell that red car" Me: "Why" - knowing full well something is up Car Thief A: "Where are you from" - trying to make small talk Me: "UK, where are you from" - gathering a plan in my head Car Thief A: "Ahhh... London" - yeah, alright mate Me: "Where are you from?" Car Thief A: "Sri Lanka" Me: "What's your name?" Car Thief A: "Safa" Me: "Please wait a sec" I go inside, grab my phone, run back to the man and square up to him, a few cms from his face, and yell a bunch of expletives. He retreats back to his car, I snap a shot of his license plate and of him and his mate (see attached). Then I go up to his window and politely tell them where to go, along with something along the lines of "If I see you again I'll f***ing k*** you". The information has been handed to the police, just for the sake of a record. Of course they won't do much unless it's actually stolen or some injury/damage is caused. Basically, in Japan, the scam is as follows: they come to your house, scope it out, leave a "we will buy your car" notice on the car with some fake details. They will return after several days/weeks and see whether the notice is still there, giving an indication of how attentive the owner is. In the event the owner is a dumbass and actually calls the number wanting to sell the car, generally they will just lowball with a minimal expectation the person will accept it. This is super common, you'll be able to find more detail on it by the likes of youtubers like Albo, if any of you watch that stuff. It's happened to my mates; a couple acquaintances have had their cars nicked, one friend had them attempt to steal the wheels (RAYS) but they couldn't get the lock nut off. So without giving too much detail, I have the basic security stuff down - pepper spray, breaker bar, security camera plus more - and I'm expediting other security-related purchases. Now, what I would like to know is what you guys do for security, any random suggestions are fine. I'm also looking at upgrading the car alarm, but I'll start another thread for that in the appropriate place. Security camera footage - I've chopped it up a bit to highlight only the visible stuff:

Yeah, I'm having some serious difficulty tuning 800hp on the stock ECU though 🤷♂️

My caster rod had an oil leak - caster was a bit out on the alignment, nothing crazy. I idiotically thought it was splash back from an engine-related leak until I dug around on forums.

Appreciate all your input on this but I'm basically sold on getting a 3rd/4th gen Pajero. After so much deliberation and realising that the only car(s) I would/could buy on the UK-side for my budget would be a BMW 3 series or 5 series or some little sh*tter like a Dacia Sandero. The BMW would be great but I'd basically just end up turning it into a track car and be in a similar position as I am with the Skyline. JP side, I just can't be assed to deal with anything that may experience a parts shortage or is currently (in my opinion) overvalued. Pajero would be great in the immediate term, spending a lot of time in the mountains etc; also safer to deal with the poor, yet overly aggressive driving over here. And they seem fairly reliable. Not to mention they've sold 1.2m units of the 3rd and 4th gens, so parts shouldnt be too difficult to obtain.

it will help if you have the software. I can't remember what happened everytime my car has thrown a code as I would usually just investigate, then fix, then remove the error with Nisdatascan. That cable should work. The one I bought was just a random Chinese one (probs the same as that) which had no mention of compatibility with Nisdatascan. You should note that there is some weird (USB) port thing with the adaptors and the software where it won't connect unless it's in the right USB port - you can google around to find the issue. I could only get the the adaptor to work on one of the USB ports on one laptop, irritatingly it's my largest laptop.
-
If it is the MAF, have a look into resoldering the joints in the MAF - it's a super easy process and would be a quick/cheap fix if that's the source of your issues. +1 get Nissan Datascan, it's about 30 bucks online. You'll need a consult cable - I just bought a China one from the Japanese ebay equivalent.

That's badass. Nice rig you had there. I've browsed the market for the old 4x4 Toyotas and they're all looking pretty overpriced, a two door wouldnt be ideal for me tbh. I am now considering a 2005-ish Mitsubishi Pajero, the large one, as they're pretty cheap for a low kms model - running costs are exceedingly high here. I worked out I'm at 12k GBP (16k USD) (ex fuel and maintenance) in cost using one of these for two years and then exporting to the UK, vs using a rental kei car frequently for the next two years which is 2-3k GBP. The question then is, what can I get in the UK for 9k GBP (+ two years of market returns)...

The first gen ones seem to be fairly rare over here too, the second gen are plentiful and cheap-ish. Fuel economy will be horrendous - especially costs on the U.K. side; I’m not considering this a dealbreaker. Better yet, the car could double as a carrier of a donor engine for the R34 in future - just a thought. Really want one. Not sure there’s a benefit getting one in Japan over the U.K. though. So dangerous at non-Japanese road speeds. Maybe a Honda Z as the novelty factor outweighs the risk of death.

I was expecting the same. The box was on the floor at my mechanic’s and everyone was getting annoyed. I figured there’d be no resolve, ordered a new transmission, and put the noisy box back in. When factoring-in what I sold the old 71c for I’m about even, there’s a slight loss when considering the new transmission. If I ever figure out what caused this I’ll update this thread.

Hahaha, literally the least practical of them all. If only this were a viable option. I am seriously evaluating this. Not a Chaser as they're too expensive for my requirements but the closely related Mark II is still cheap in poverty spec. The Celsior is a very good shout - cheers - I've been looking at Crowns until now.

I am currently based in Japan, own an R34 and am considering getting a second car as the R34 is just not so ideal as a daily. Eventually, say 2-3 years ahead, I will return to the UK. As it turns out, I can import my posessions - cars included - to the UK, tax free. So I'm considering taking advantage of this as best I can whilst also satisying the need to have another car in Japan and the UK in future. I need to consider the following: A max budget of around GBP 15k (28k AUD, 20k USD), ideally it would be less than this, even half as much would be better. Economic benefits are of a high consideration, along with practicality. I either want it to last forever or be able to sell it 5 years later with little to no loss (better yet, at a profit). I'm open to any type of car, SUV, Sports car, Kei car, Sedan. I have been looking at everything from Jimnys, Pajero Minis, GT86s, Toyota FJ Cruisers/Land Cruisers, Honda Z600 (although, it's likely to be outright dangerous driving a kei in europe), to Toyota Chasers (in poverty spec 2.0l AT). Alot of these for one reason or another I can't really justify, whether it be too dangerous in the EU, worthless or impossible to get parts. On cars like the GT86 there is a mild discount vs UK prices at current rates - say 10% after shipping. Typically the cars here are in better condition vs the UK. So the question is, what would you buy in this situation? Please do not suggest another Skyline.

I had to keep this quiet as it's been a long-winded battle of blame between myself/my mechanic and Nengun/Nissan. But in short, I was refunded for this box. I have placed an order for a new one - prices have gone up 20% since June and there's a 3-month wait. In the meantime I'll be using this box, hopefully drive a few more events on it then swap it out in March/April. I appreciate all your opinions, it helped when talking with my mechanic. I would love to determine what has gone wrong but I'm not expecting it to be determined quickly. The OEM stuff was swapped out at about 800kms with Castrol Syntrans (TAF-X) 75w-90 GL4+, pretty sure it's fully synthetic. During the recent diagnosis I swapped it back to Nissan GL4 75w-85. You're right, it looks like p*ss.

Don't do it

Hi all, Took the car in to the shop to diagnose the gearbox noise. The mechanic was pretty sure it was the gearbox from the off, although he said the noise was much louder from the bellhousing and noted the possibility of it being the release bearing. He took the box out, tried a new release bearing to no avail, drained the oil - which looked incredibly metallic - and stated it's the box. Which is pretty much all there is to it - further opinions welcome. I took pictures and we made a video documenting our findings - yeah that tray was clean before. Video: Transmission Fluid.mp4

Cheers guys. I’ll mention this to my mechanic on Monday, luckily he performed the work which helps in the way of warranties - hopefully. I’m at the very least annoyed about the US$100 cost of the oil but given that pales in comparison to the cost of a new gbox, I’d be relieved if this doesn’t cost me another US$2k. I’ll update with our findings. I’ll also get a video clip for others to use as a sound reference.
