Oof, glad that it seems have gone much better than it could have. I have seen some pretty terrible tow truck handling just as a bystander. Zero fvcks given and no regard for the cars at all. Also broke down with fuel pump issues the other week as the wiring was on its way out. Roadside assistance guy used to have a Skyline and was looking at Stageas on the market. The tow truck driver also used to own a high powered Skyline and was telling stories about that. Apparently too fast to have any issues with being pulled over... Makes all the difference dealing with people who actually know their cars and care.

Yet another clutch question

Sounds like a good excuse for a trip to Australia! But yeah, trying it out is probably the best way to go about it. Please report back what you find. -
R34 Series 1 And 2 Front Reo Difference?

Just commenting to attach Greg's picture in the forums. I'm surprised it's still available on imgur considering how long it has been. Free imagehosting like that gives me anxiety. -
Yet another clutch question
soviet_merlin replied to joshuaho96's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Man, clutch feel is so subjective. I moved to the Nismo Twin from a heavy single plate NPC Heavy Duty Organic and it is sooo much better to drive in everyday traffic. A heavy clutch pedal is the worst here. The Nismo is light enough I don't even think about it. But with the heavy clutch in traffic I was aware of every time I had to push the pedal. In terms of being grabby I would describe it like this: - A normal clutch has ~10cm of clutch pedal travel between initial bite point and clutch fully gripping - With the Nismo twin plate it's ~4cm of clutch pedal travel for the same From what I understand that's normal for multi-plate clutches. Maybe the Nismo is more forgiving than others, don't know. It's not punishing but you have to get used to it. My driving is 80% city and no issues there. Smooth to take off and change gears. Hill starts are mostly fine. It is a bit of a pain for reversing on an incline. I find it hard to get the right amount of clutch slip for that and always end up feeling like I'm burning it too much. But, you may have a very different experience based on your body type and footwear. With heavy boots or shoes it's likely going to be pretty shit. Just because the clutch is light and the boots don't give enough feel to let the clutch pedal out with precision. Might be similar if you are a big guy or have motor control issues. But able-bodied and driving with decent shoes it feels great. You don't mention noise at all. It does chatter at idle RPM when it gets warm. Nothing that is out of place in a GTR though IMO. -
Nice! I hope it all works out. At least now you know the track as well and can build from last year. Looking forward to see your car in action again. Ooof. Godspeed!

Are you going to be at WTAC this year @bcozican? Just realised it's coming up end of August so not long to go at all. https://www.worldtimeattack.com/

This coming up today. See you there! -
Man, that sucks. Leaves a bit of a sour taste reading Carinspect's points on what they do: And in the list of things checked amongst others

CV Axle boot torn, what are my options?
soviet_merlin replied to Tacos's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Brother, sister, father, mother... if someone stops at the lights it's a race. Leaving clouds of tyre smoke behind with a slight mango smell to them. One hand on the steering wheel, one hand on the automatic gear shift and one hand on the vape /s -

Excuse me! It is seeing some serious load when I'm doing sick 1000kw 40psi four wheel skids racing Camrys at the traffic lights coming home with the weekly groceries -

Hmmm, good to know, thanks! I have to admit it was a spur of the moment decision to go with the aftermarket driveshaft and did no research. It's a bit disheartening reading comments about those on the internet. Will see how it holds up. It has been 15,000km and so far so good. -

FWIW I had the one on my Stagea replaced some time ago. Didn't have any shuddering. Just lots of grease going everywhere. My mechanic was saying it is easier and cheaper to just get a new one and replace it. No reason to spend hours on the labour for them to dick around fixing the old one. We ended up getting a replacement from JustJap. Reasonably confident it would have been one of these: https://justjap.com/products/gsp-premium-front-driveshaft-r-h-nissan-r32-r33-r34-skyline-gtr-stagea-4wd It was $190 ordered through the mechanic. We only replaced the side that was torn and left the other alone. -
I don't think I have ever seen a stock R33 on the road. It looks very civilised and I quite like it! Please post some more photos when you get it. At least around where I am it feels like R33s can't exist without at least some bigass cannon exhaust. Making all the noise and not necessarily any of the power.

That email is such a quintessentially German response. Makes me wonder whether they translated it from some company guidelines. In Germany we don't say 'f**k you!', we say 'Please be assured that we have taken your concerns very seriously.'

My R32 GTR Restoration
soviet_merlin replied to ianp's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
Oof, that hurts a little. Please tell your wife that she delivered a widespread burn to probably at least half of the forum population Being in that age range I feel I'm only just getting to a point in life where I can even consider purchasing and driving a yellow fun car. -
Seems to be not the first time for that guy @Duncan. Was successful before as well. See the below post where he was redirecting to the same email. I like to believe there is a special place in hell for people like that. @PranK put in a post limit before messaging but looks like that doesn't really help. Just invites cheap posts on welcome topics. Not sure what can help here. Maybe a warning when opening private messages?

Yup, it's all still sitting in a box in my garage. Just message me on the forums and I'm sure we can work something out if you want it.

370z LSD differential swap into R34 GTT
soviet_merlin replied to shortyboy's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
By the way if you haven't seen it there was this discussion around R34GTT diffs and diffs in general the past days. I feel like I learned a lot from it. -
To be fair the advertised values are just from whatever benchmark they run. My understanding was they are good for comparing cars but nowhere near real world use. Surely the same for VW? Not that they would ever lie about something like fuel consumption or emissions. So the wife likes it. How do you find it?

FWIW Zenmarket has a shipping calculator: https://zenmarket.jp/en/calc.aspx In my experience they are pretty reasonable. Don't want to start sounding like a shill but for buying stuff from Japan it has worked really well for me. My understanding is that Jesse Streeter (also) does container shipping. So for big things that can't fit in regular parcels he's the way to go. Like when buying a new bonnet.
-
Realistically, what difference does it make when running a genuine Garrett core or not? Performance? Reliability? I'm curious because it is such a big difference in pricing. Thanks!
-
I've had good experiences with ZenMarket. Shipping is straightforward with them. Can throw the links in there as well and it'll translate. Or use their search directly. In a way it works too well. I had to stop browsing there because I kept buying stuff and then not using it...
-
Yep, fair enough. That's how it can get anyone in the end. Thanks for sharing! Btw, did you reach out to wreckers for the bonnet latch? Looks like jpjdm may have had one in stock at some point: https://jpjdm.com/shop/index.php?id_product=2994&rewrite=nissan-skyline-r32-bonnet-latch&controller=product They say to message them for requests as their listings don't show all they have.

That sucks. Sounds very sketchy. Some random account without any real contributions sending you the alleged email of someone else on the forums. I presume you didn't talk to @pol1on1 directly? He hasn't been signed in on the forums for 2 years. Makes me wonder whether someone like @PranK has access to users' messages and could check whether this was tried on other people.
