Yep! It was good fun! The sound of RBs shouting up the twisties brought joy to my cold twisted bitter heart It was missing some angry supercharged V8 boat in the mix though. -

Chris' R34 GTT Series 2
soviet_merlin replied to hoodedreeper's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
Oof, sounds like a big job. Looking forward to see how it goes though. I think it may be one of those things that'll hurt but will feel much better about the car afterwards. It also makes me want to not look too closely under my car. I presume living in the UK is not helping here. You'd get a solid two days of driving out of the car if you only took it out on nice days -
GTR R33 pop-up screen choices
soviet_merlin replied to gilR33GTR's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
I'd be interested to hear about some solutions for this as well. Similar situation as I'd like to keep the triple analog gauges. That's a good point. Looks like on the Pioneer the default can be changed on whether it is open or not. And it has the usual radio control buttons even when it is folded. Sounds a bit annoying regardless. I think it's possible to half move the screen, but looks like it's via touch screen controls only so not great whilst driving. There are some videos about the controls on youtube. Doesn't look like it's possible to move it by hand to just quickly reach the controls that are hidden when it's up. Personally at $1300 AUD I'd want something that is pretty much perfect so not sure about this one. Hah, I hear you. The speakers in mine are stuffed so haven't listened to music in the car at all. Weird how after a while it just becomes normal. Even considered blanking out the stereo slot out to make it look a bit cleaner. Would be nice though to have a proper display with carplay/android auto integration. -
Oh wow, these actually look quite nice. Might be a bit too subtle and still look mum spec though in my opinion. What about wheels? I saw a Golf wagon the other day with some fancy rotiforms on it. Very unexpected and it looked great as they transformed the look of the whole car. Though depending on how the car is driven it may result in anguish having them murdered on curbs.

Everything to change on rb25det gearbox?
soviet_merlin replied to silviaz's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Yeah no pivot ball for the pull type. I went through the same process last year: In the end I just ended up getting the spigot bush and clutch fork. The fork not really being needed as it's solid but thought what the heck and did it anyway. Flywheel came with the clutch. There's also the little rubber dust cover that goes on outside. Which in the end also came with the clutch. I hope you are getting a good clutch. It makes all the difference for actually enjoying to drive the car -
OMFG! This has been bugging me for almost two and a half years now. Especially when taking the dogs because of having to walk back onto the street to lock the car. Opened up the key, swiped a cotton bud over all the contact points, bent the battery pins a bit more and put it back together. Didn't even end up using the isopropyl. It didn't look too bad but got a bit of gunk off. Guess what? It's working now. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm so stoked right now, I owe you one. Though I'm still not quite sure where it went wrong. Because the actual mechanism for the buttons is internal and can't get to it I would think. See SW1 and SW2 on the photo. Woot, that's very exciting! Re the fob hopefully a bit of a clean is all it needs.
-
Ooo, that sounds quite reasonable actually. You may be on to something there. I think I can live with that explanation
-
Haha, that's pretty rank! We actually picked up one of those just the other day. Waiting for some warmer days now so that the seats get a chance to dry whilst still in the car. Kind of related: do you have any idea what the brown stains are on the carpets in Japanese cars? I have seen it on quite a few imports. Never noticed it on other cars or maybe just didn't pay attention. But, what the hell are people doing? I was thinking maybe it's chewing tobacco or something like that. Boggles my mind.
-
So what was it?
-
There's no light on the key. I don't think there's a way to tell whether it's working or not just by looking at it. Personally, I'd try to rule easy things out. Starting with - Does the central locking work with the key in the door? - Does the central locking work with the button in the driver's door? If yes to both then I would think it's less likely to be an issue in the doors themselves. I'd agree with Duncan and try and find out whether the key is actually working or try a different one. I spent some time with a sort of similar issue on my Stagea where remote unlocking works but locking doesn't. It's the same style key and it looks like it's transmitting at 315MHz. Checked it on a Flipper Zero and it picks up something at 315MHz and FM476 modulation when I press the button. In my case the key isn't transmitting anything on the lock button. So the key not working even though it looks fine and has a fresh battery seems to be a thing. Might be worth looking into the service manual if you want to dig deeper. See as an example the section of the Stagea manual where it shows how the key signal is picked and how it's passed on to the doors. And the different ways to program or reset it. Not sure if it'll help much for the R34 though as even between the two Stagea series they changed some of the logic. But surely there's an equivalent R34 manual. stagea_service_manual_central_locking.pdf

R33 GTR Rebuild + Upgrading
soviet_merlin replied to oSkylines's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Thank you Duncan! That explains a lot. There are lots of comments on setups being good or bad to drive, but never what it is about it specifically. I noticed the change in bite with the clutch but didn't know it was a thing. Say with a stock clutch there's about 10cm of clutch pedal travel between the clutch starting to bite and fully clamped. With the twin plate it's down to what feels like 4cm of pedal travel for the same. It does make it a lot less forgiving to drive. But after getting used to it I find it's really not an issue. I haven't driven a stock Nissan, but I don't find it any worse than driving a stock BMW or VW for example. It's possible to drive smoothly with it. Can take the in-laws or the dogs in the back and basically go full chauffeur mode and no one is the wiser. Though it's not in a GTR and it's not running 400kw either. This is very much in contrast to some cars I have seen at events where people struggle parking their Skylines on an open parking lot on a level surface. Lots of revving, jerky clutch engagement and stalling. Probably running much more racy setups. My main issue with that specific single plate clutch was actually that the clutch pedal was super heavy. I also have skinny nerd legs so that may add to that. The clutch pedal feel for the twin plate is so light it doesn't feel much different from any OEM clutch. This may be one of those things where everyone's experiences and what people consider nice or not may differ quite a lot -

In case you are not looking at it already, it's worth checking rhdjapan.com as well. For expensive items like that they tend to be a couple hundred dollars cheaper than nengun and justjap. I don't know what the OS Giken is like. But I switched from an NPC heavy duty single plate clutch to the Nismo super coppermix twin plate and it made all the difference. It feels great and it's pretty much like driving a normal car. A nice one at that, not some economy shitbox with vague and wonky pedal feel. It's a bit more noisy as it produces a bit of chatter at idle and low rpm but it's not too bad. In comparison the heavy pedal feel of the single plate clutch was like driving a truck and in start-stop traffic it got old very quickly. Purely in terms of driveability I'd vouch for the Nismo twin plate. -
It sounds bonkers as well! I only have one clip from my potato phone which doesn't quite do it justice. Second car after the Evo in the clip. Definitely left an impression! VID_20230902_164218.mp4

Stagea Doors
soviet_merlin replied to RBpowerrrr's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
Just how bad are your doors? And where are you located? If it's just the usual rust under the mirrors then you can get that fixed in a shop. Still have to do mine and have been putting it off Considering that doors are somewhat big and heavy, unless you find some local they sound like a bitch to ship- 1 reply
