this is the historics yes? They regularly run these in the historics along with a few other group A cars from that period. The Gibson R32 is also there but doesn't get raced, I have seen it being driven around though. You can usually go right up to it and poke the engine bay etc .

The point being that the I6 was the highest level performance engine through then (L20-24, RB) with the exception of the DR30s. Ohh maybe I misunderstood, do you mean is that why the VG30 and SR20 have been ditched? well the SR20 was lost really only because of emissions, although I can't work out why they chose not to do more with the SR20VET. The VG30 is from what I understand a fairly direct ancestor of the VQ series which are still used today.

Just FYI nissan ran inline 6's in the skylines from 1969 to 2002. And as mentioned shortly after V6 have been selected based on emissions and crumple zones.

another big reason for the inline 6 which is one of the reasons nissan stuck with it, is that they are perfectly balanced.

Just had that with my car, was just a loose cable off the battery. Start the car up and shake the battery and associated cables.

Are those even GTR panels though? the back isn't flared from what I can see.
