but they're just track days Noel. These guys are talking about the NSW & Australian SuperSprint Championships. Even though its just club level, the guys who enter this are going for the competition as much as they are interested in their own times and having fun going flat out around a race track. People want to have competitive classes of relatively similar vehicles they can enter.

no one said they are as good as a CAMS spec cage. Its perfectly obvious that the larger diameter and thicker walls of the CAMS spec tube is going to be stronger. Its also obvious that the bends around the dash are a compromise and weaken the structure. But it permits easy access to get in and out of your road car every day, not something I would like to do with my old CAMS approved cage! And certainly adds at least some rigidity to the bodyshell, if not a huge amount of additional roll over protection. Still, it must be stronger than just relying on the A pillar alone! but rollovers are quite unusual at events that don't mandate roll cages anyway. Next time you're doing load simulations, try it on the bare bodyshell - if you can work out how to model its strength. But that all misses the point. CAMS allow non-complying cages (in events that don't mandate cages for your vehicle) as long as they are not unsafely constructed. Like it or lump it. So take your own advice: give over to the higher power's wisdom, accept it and move on. CAMS are against your assertion that anything not to their spec is unsafe rubbish.

don't do too many laps in a row - it will be a quick way to kill the auto. Do you have a transmission cooler? Same goes for engine oil cooler. Limit yourself to 4 or 5 laps at a time. Your brakes will probably go off by then anyway if you are just using normal pads and fluid.

That only works for Superlap because they don't allow open wheelers, clubman type vehicles, or CAMS 2A style sports cars etc. You need to seperate the Clubmans from proper full bodied production cars. It really is no contest. I don't see the need to seperate RWD and FWD. Neither is conclusively better than the other on racetracks. The real distinction between 2WD and AWD. AWD is a distinct advantage. This would be my suggestion: Our AASA sprint classes up here are very, very simple. Road 4, Road 6, Road 8 and Race. You have to be road registered and using road legal tyres to be in the road categories. Anything unreg or on slicks goes into Race category. The numbers denote number of cylinders. Turbos go up one category, so a Turbo 4cyl is in Road 6. Rotaries are classified as Road 6, which means turbo rotors are Road 8. The only thing you might want to do is maybe apply some modification limits as seperate classes within those categories. Eg Road 4 Limited Modified, Road 4 Modified etc. Sort of stealing Targa's idea. That might help keep the old-school supporters of the Type classes somewhat happy... You could also use Targa's list of factory high performance vehicles that go into MS even if they're stock, and push modified examples of them up to Race instead of Road classification. Add a category for kits cars/clubmans/2A sports cars as you have already in NSW (which is a really good idea) and maybe expand it to include other seriously modified light sports cars - eg if you have a sub 1000kg sports car with both an engine swap and supercharging device (incl turbo), like the supercharged Honda powered Elises or turbo SR20 MX5, as random examples lol! Maybe add a Road AWD category, or just include a trophy for fastest 2WD??? And do something within the Race category to break it down a bit. Over and Under 2L for example? You'd end up with: Road 4 LMS & Road 4 MS Road 6 LMS & Road 6 MS Road 8 LMS & Road 8 MS Road AWD LMS & Road AWD MS Clubman/kit car U2L & O2L Race U2L & O2L

Nissan Aus only sold 100 R32 GTRs didn't they? So that's not allowed in Type 1 or 2. Imported S15s are just as eligible as locally sold ones. Their rules specify that more than 200 of the model must have been sold locally, not that your car must have been one of the local cars.
-
yeah, that's why I said potential newcomers. look at the number of imports at other trackdays in NSW if you want to see your potential newcomers to NSW Supersprints.
-
I take it back then. They didn't cherry pick the CAMS manual to exclude imports, they redefined the CAMS def'n of Production car specifically to exclude imports from Types 1 and 2. how's this? "In general, the Type rules are a combination of Circuit Racing Classes from the CAMS Manual (Types 3, 4 and 5) and categories to suit the more standard, road-registered cars used by newcomers to the sport." What do you reckon the majority of potential newcomers to the sport are driving?
-
strikes me as cherry picking the CAMS manual for ways to keep imports out. Types 1 and 2 didn't mention "CAMS Production Cars", it says "Road registered cars". Imports are just as registered as Australian delivered vehicles. which makes this a moot point, but Nissan sold a few more than 200 S15s I reckon... Thats "the model of which" imported S15's are...

also consider the effect that will have on your geometry. Main thing will be scrub radius on the front. Moving that outward too far can cause things like instability under brakes, increased steering effort, and more feedback through the wheels when hitting bumps. Can also reduce the cornering power you can generate. I had too much '+' scrub on an old Datto years ago... looked better with these. went better (2.6sec over 3 laps of Morgan Park) with these. Both had Yoki A032R. -

Brus aren't you supposed to wedge a credit card between the tyre and the bodywork? this is probably as bad a place as any to ask - what do people know about 5Zigen wheels? up to the job of bouncing off kerbs? -

triangles with sides of 150mm... My previous log booked IPRA Datto passed pre-race inspection with dry cell battery lying on passenger floor unboxed (bolted down obviously). I can't imagine there would be any problem with having it in the boot with the fuel system. -
no worries mate, I got some nice new Federals instead. Now I have to keep the car for another year or so! Can do. Its pretty easy, and we might be able to bluetooth the track info across instead of making it from scratch. Going to Lakeside in Dec?
-
HA! cool, I'll try that as soon as I get home. Thanks!
-
too much fun...
-
haha - that's pretty cool Chris! I'm pretty happy considering I had no gear for the two low-80kph corners, Turn 2 and the T-Junction (AKA Stupid). 2nd was a bit too short, 3rd was a bit to tall. Did 1:28.1's either way. Stupid standard diff! That's the best excuse I can come up with anyway

iPhone + Harry'sLapTimer + TomTom incar kit was accurate to within a few hundreths vs the transponder timing at Morgan Park last weekend. So there you go Ben. Get yourself a TomTom in-car kit.

all I can say mate, is that you have a much better eye than me! I can't judge their tiny metal or thin welds from those photos! but from what you can see from those small pics, I don't see anything to suggest it's unsafely constructed. as for your concern on the bolts, they're mounted in double shear and guestimating from when i fitted the cage to my car, they'd be about 14mm diameter. I can tow 3500kg using a mild steel pin of similar diameter mounted in double shear, so you can stop worrying about your 1000kg of "force" acting on them.

Can I Mount My 4 Point Harness Like This?
hrd-hr30 replied to abcent's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
CAMS recommend keeping the shoulder straps as short as possible. -
ssxricho, mine were R17's.
-
yeah, they sold straight away.

I think people get far too hung up on CAMS regs, and think the only safe way is with the dimensions CAMS specify - eg its the only right size... Its worth noting that NZ use the FIA dimensions on thier rally car cages, and they DO NOT meet CAMS specifications. At any rate, you only need an FIA spec cage for International events. I rolled a rally car off a bank landing on the roof with this style of cage. Unbolted it from that car and threw it in the new shell - all we did was replace the bolts. try that with a you beaut weld-in cage hehe

problems were with Kumho S700 slicks, but I hear the V70a suffer the same issues.

it was good fun out there. And very interesting to see your own lines from a chase car... I want to do flame-outs like yours looks much better than belching smoke lol outright winner's in-car: http://vimeo.com/16829448 Supercharged Honda powered Elise. Its a different world of performance!
