Superlap 2009 Gets A Green Light!
hrd-hr30 replied to Superlap Australia's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
Great news! And well done on getting Oran Park again. By the way the commentators were talking on the V8 coverage on the weekend I thought it was all over for Oran Park. I'll definitely come back for another run at that track - had a ball last year even thought he car was absolute rubbish! The Supra is much better equipped for Clubsprint Class now with much better tyres now (made sure to get some over 100UTQG for Superlap Clubsprint) and a bit more suspension tuning which should be good for almost 3 seconds there. It was 2.2 quicker at Lakeside, 2.5 at QR Sprint and the longer Oran Park GP layout with all those corners should net a little more than that. Also have a little bit of power to come shortly too. Might be hard to fit a 4pt harness properly in the car though - no cage basically means you have to use the factory rear seat belt anchorages which may be too low and close to the front seat to keep the shoulder straps at less than 45degrees from the horizontal as required in the cams manual... I don't want to have to cut holes for mounting points. The CAMS manual says lap sash belts meeting AS2596 are OK for State and above Speed Events in road registered closed cars (ie not convertibles) http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/general/0...dule_I_Q408.pdf And there is a school of thought that harnesses without roll cages may be more dangerous in event of rolovers too. I don't know if that's right or not, but it may be prudent to stick with the existing CAMS General Requirements? -
Queensland Hill Climbers – Check In
hrd-hr30 replied to Nismo_Boy's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
Definitely! Its a top idea Josh! I'd be up for that, I love Mt Cotton and haven't run there for over a year. 30 cars would get heaps of runs too. Good way for people to learn the place. Only hitch is I'm not a member for SAU QLD and I don't currently have a Skyline! But I do have my eye on one now that I sold my Datto track car - btw Ben I might need to chat about RB20 mods in the not too distant future But if I don't end up with this Skyline, it could be a bit of fun to allow the Supra in if you need to fill up numbers when it all happens??? I can just imagine the pitlane banter! -
look like passenger car tyres. small ones at that. what's the load rating? where's the spare??? light truck tyres are the go on car trailers.

Australian Supersprint Championships
hrd-hr30 replied to Neil's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
impressive times from the XU1 Torana! so, how many interstate people at this "National Championship"? kinda feels like the yanks' "World Series" stuff shame it wasn't promoted throught the other states. Did they mention any plans to do it again next year? and a date or location? -
not the way I remember it looked wet to me??? next excuse... hmm, thought you were suggesting it was wetter for your session than mine? now it was so dry you didn't want to risk using your wet compound tyres??? yet you still use the "A048R's are not the best" excuse anyway! lol I just ran on my 4year old nearly bald rear tyres and didn't think about using that as a excuse for not being faster... like the other 2/3rd of the field that were faster than you, we didn't have the option of tyres choice, we just run on what we brung. If I was in the slowest third of the field, I think I'd be a bit quieter about how inexperienced all these guys who "potter around at sprints" are! lol

which one was your favourite Danny?
-
lol what could I possibly have taken offence to in that Danny? here's a tip. maybe you should get your credit card out and buy a bottle of Fog-X so you can see the flags hanging out over the pit wall next to the tower not more than a metre or two from your car? just an idea. all of the first group saw the red flags there, and every other group saw the chequered flag in the same spot. of course we're just inexperienced duds who don't know anything because we haven't circuit raced with big boys like you. what exactly does nailing it in first gear in the wet coming out of the pits tell you? didn't you expect it to spin them up? clearly not, if the fact you almost put it in the wall at walking pace was anything to judge by... I've always found the level of grip can vary from corner to corner in the wet, so nailing it in 1st gear on the straight coming out of the pits on cold tyres in the wet isn't going to give me any meaningful information about the track. but as you pointed out I don't have your awesome experience playing with big boys. still managed to beat you by 11 seconds though.

ah, I did one of those Rennen days before QR started running this series. Was stoked to find QR were only charging a hundred bucks! I have no idea why I missed one of the rounds though... Not sure what's going on with Lakeside - At the moment its open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month for general practice. That's this week I took the Datto out there on the 5th but it started bucketing down as soon as I got there. All I want is one dry lap to see what it can do!!! I'm going to try again this Wednesday morning if the weather is half alright... I suspect the court date has been put off again and they don't want to start the resurfacing works until that's settled. If that's the case I hope it drags on for a while longer to keep Lakeside open in its original state!
-
All the days were the same cost, $99 prepaid. no regularity in the mix, just total accumulated points from the four rounds. Tony only did 2 rounds (thankfully!) and got 2 wins (20 points each) for a total of 40points (mind you he used Michelin Porsche Cup slicks in round 3 and they specifically said slicks were not permitted). I did 3 rounds and the pointscore says I got 2 seconds (17 points each) and a third (15 points) for a total of 49points. I actually won the first round though - they messed up the results for that. Originally left Justin Wall who came second out of the points. When they fixed that up, they also changed Paul Zacka's 1:06.18 to Brad Zacka and 1:01.40!!! wtf? Luckily it doesn't affect the overall result for the series. Justin Wall who got 2nd in Road 8 did 3 rounds as well and got a 3rd (15), a win for the round I missed (20), and a 5th (10) for a total of 45 points.
-
if the other SAS & WAS series are anything to go by they announce a winner for each class rather than an overall single winner of the series. points are accumulated from all 4 rounds. doesn't look like they dropped the worst round or anything like that. at each round points awarded for 1st place down in each class are: 20,17,15,12,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2, and 1 point for each of the rest of the competitors in the class.
-
anyway, back on topic. Lakeside Sprints Championship Winners http://www.queenslandraceway.com.au/ even with a mistake in the points from round 1 I managed to take out the Road 8 class. Hopefuly I can use my track car there next year!

even with a smiley face I don't see how these words "still making new friends I see" can be taken as anything other than having a dig at someone you don't know from a bar of soap? its only 1 other member (not plural) that I have any sort of disagreement with and if you look back you'll see its pretty clear cut who's in the wrong over that. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Aw...hl=awd+shootout

what are you on about Noel? I don't see anything "egotistical" in what you've quoted??? If what I wrote in response to Danny sounded egotistical, maybe you missed what he said? The most egotistical sounding thing I said was basically quoting his words back at him, and I'm not going to apologise for that. and that was with credit card safely tucked away in my wallet. you can't buy ability eh Danny. and I don't give a rat's arse if that sounds egotistical
-
yeah, much like you with this comment. I've known Danny for years Vince, whoever you are... what's your problem anyway? Never met you or had any dealings with you. All I can remember is you taking exception to me posting to let other SAU people know about the Lakeside Sprint Series when it started, and you felt you had to rush to Paul's defence for some reason just because he also ran 1 day out there??? That ain't me making new friends, that's all you bud. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/La...97#entry3933297

well I did beat you out there, by about 11 or 12 seconds that day!!! So if you're under the impression you're going to beat me out there, you better sharpen up a bit mate! And unlike you, I only got 1 clear lap after I passed the STi that was holding me up., hadn't driven the Datsun since the AHC in 2007, and had never driven it in the wet. So much for you not pottering around at Sprints eh? high 2s? my standard Supra road car ran 1:01.3 last time on street tyres (not semi slicks) on the track as it is in 2008. Not realy worth comparing to what you (or whoever Gerry is) claim to have done over 7 years ago. We all saw what you were capable of the other week - 1:20-odd! Your car was easily the loudest car there on the day, and was never going to be under the required db limit. It doesn't matter whether the noise is coming from the exhaust or the induction, there's a noise limit and your car was way in excess of it. And you ignored black flags lap after lap. They were hanging out way over the pit wall with a giant black flag... its you responsibility to look out for flags at the flag points. I managed to see all the flags just fine and I don't have any demisting or even working wipers in the Datsun! My Supra only has a cat and a Jasma cannon on the back and it easily passes the noise tests out there. My Datsun only have a res and straight through muffler and again easily passes. So I call bullsh1t on the brand new road cars failing the noise tests at Lakeside. don't it make ya proud? http://www.queenslandraceway.com.au/lakesi...rral_111008.pdf

Supra Vs Gtr On Fuel Economy
hrd-hr30 replied to Shidan's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
ah yeah, that's one thing I forgot. The RB26 sound at up to 9000rpm (Mines ECU rev limit) is just fantastic! 2JZ can't compete with the sound of an RB26! I took it to Wakefield Park and QLD Raceway in sequential mode and it was horrible. The second turbo doesn't really kick in till 4-4500rpm and the redline is at 6800rpm but really you need to shift before 6500rpm. There were a couple of corners on each track where you fall below the second turbo and you just have no power at all and hoping the guy behind you doesn't run into you on the exit of the corner! Then you get back to 4500 and it comes on with a sudden rush and if you're still exiting the corner then all you get is hopeless wheelspin. Its just nasty. In TTC mode you make full boost by ~3000rpm and its a nice linear power delivery. You pick up alot of power and torque between 3000 and 4500rpm in TTC mode. So you have the grunt to drive out of the apexes and have control over the amount of power you're putting to the rear. Just like a proper car! I think the guys who like sequential just drive on the road and like that instant off idle torque from the single turbo coming on boost straight away. But I prefer TTC even on the road. Better fuel economy if you're just driving around off boost, and on the highway in particular. The 3000cc engine still has plenty of torque for driving around and if you want to go fast, all you have to do is change down a gear. TTC is much gentler on the 2nd turbo too. The Supra definitely has a better high speed balance. They've got pretty good traction - mines at a sensible ride height (600mm from lower edge of 18" rim) and good quality 275/35 tyres on the back. But you can't expect to just be able mash the throttle open in 3rd gear corners on the track in a powerful rwd car. They have to be driven. I'm pretty much always a little sideways out of corners, but that's just the way I drive... btw, drags are harder on a car's driveline (clutch, box, diff and axles) than circuit. Circuit is hardest on brakes and tyres. As long as everything is in good condition and you don't rush the gear changes, circuit isn't going to hurt your car. yep, my supra's 2/1 brakes definitley stop better than the R32 GTR's Sumitomo 4/2 brakes did. I've still got normal road pads and fluid in the supra and no brake fade in 5 laps of QR or Lakeside. The GTR would fade after 2 laps at QR on normal pads and fluid! I think the Supra has a bit of an image problem wrt to performance thanks to all the riced up veilsided P plate NA auto things out there. I don't think they should have made a NA Supra. It waters down the perception of the model too much. But I do like the element of Surprise! And you don't get many other Supras at track days. Actually I don't think I've seen any other Supra at any event I've done in it yet! I'm going to take the Supra over a weighbridge on the weekend to see what it weighs. Everyone thinks they're stupidly heavy (like 1600-1700kg), but I'm not so sure about that. And I'm going to go back to QR in 2 weeks time to see how it goes compared to the GTR now. GTR on Federal tyres did 1:01.54. Supra in horrible TTC mode did 1:03.9, but its much better now in terms of handling and power delivery. I think it wil be very close. -
Supra Vs Gtr On Fuel Economy
hrd-hr30 replied to Shidan's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
I had an R32 GTR with Mines ECU (too rich, but cool flame-outs), HKS exhaust and pods. It used to get about 14l/100km or about 450km to a tank which would take around 65l to fill. Would no doubt be better economy with a better tune. My current JZA80 Supra twin turbo is far better on fuel. about 12l/100km around town and under 10l/100km on the highway! Typically around town I get about 550km to a tank which again is around 65l. I run the Supra in TTC mode (turbos in parellel not sequential) and it has a Jasma exhaust and a pod. I don't really know which I prefer. I think the GTR had a little more power, but I often ran it at 0.9bar. Supra probably handles a little better (both had coilovers), but the GTR was no slouch in the corners either. I think slow corners the GTR would have the edge thanks to its better traction out of the corners, but fast flowing high speed stuff like Lakeside I think the Supra is better (shame I never got a lap time for the GTR there!). The Supra's brakes are better, no question. Both my GTR and Supra have the earlier smaller brakes, and even though the Supra just has 2 piston sliding calipers up front compared to the GTRs Sumitomo 4 spots, the Supra stops harder and doesn't fade like the GTR did. When you turn up to a track day or sprint event, people just expect the GTR to be fast. The Supra is different. People seem surprised to see it do good times. If I could I'd have both of them! -
I Hate To Blow My Own Trumpet But.....
hrd-hr30 replied to BBGTR's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
unreal! that's my new background... -
anyone who saw the way Courtney and Murph threw the 'bog standard car' around should now plainly see the Aussie Stig is not a professional driver, or even a good club level driver. So forget your ideas of him being a current or ex V8 Supercar driver! I don't know who he is, but he ain't fast. Has the Stig driven the Mazda 2?

Tarmac Rallying Perpetual Thread
hrd-hr30 replied to Marlin's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
there is a school of thought that blind rallies are safer as people have to "drive it as they see it" rather than trying to fully commit to corners based on their pace notes. Most of the QRC rounds are blind rallies. Or they were when I used to compete. -

Tarmac Rallying Perpetual Thread
hrd-hr30 replied to Marlin's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
obviously Targa Tas would be a huge effort to note yourself or even check a set of purchased notes. If I ever did it I'd buy notes, but I think I'd treat it as a blind rally. I just couldn't trust someone else's notes that much. For short events like Lake Mountain and Mt Buller I'd definitely do my own notes. -
Tarmac Rallying Perpetual Thread
hrd-hr30 replied to Marlin's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
I'd hate to use someone else's notes. can you do your own pacenoting? I had a simple system when I started in forest rallying. put a bit of tape around the top of the steering wheel, and make a cardboard cut out to sit behind the wheel with your numbering system on the back - for the above 6 to 1 system, you'd put 6 at 11 and 1 o'clock, 5 at 10 and 2, 4 at 9 and 3, and so on. that would get you to 1 by 6 o'clock. This gives you an indication of the speed of the corner rather than just its angle on paper, because a more open 90degree turn will require less steering lock than a tigher slower 90 degree turn. You really need minimum of 2 passes over the stage - one to note, and the second to check and alter where appropriate. obviously you add your own extra information like + or -, opens, cut, cautions etc. And that's it - pacenoting for dummies. That's how I started, but then again i did roll the car... -
start by trying better pads and fluid and see how it goes. I used to run my R32 GTR with the sumitomo calipers at QR with TRW/Lucas pads and Penrite Sin 600degree fluid and they'd almost cope with 5 laps - you'd get fade towards the end of the 4th lap if you were pushing 10/10ths. QR is reknowned for being hard on brakes though. Better pads would have sorted it, so try the ones bnr#@ recommended. I didn't bother, I'd just run 4 hard laps and use the 5th as an extra cool down lap. You could also try some ducting to the centre of the disc as well. That was going to be my next step, but I sold the car. All pretty cheap stuff and will get you by if the budget is tight. Next step up from there without spending lots of money is a set of caliper brackets that allow you to fit the larger disc under the sumitomo calipers. Or for a bit more money you could try and find a set of Brembos as someone suggested above. After that, the sky's the limit. They're the options from cheapest upwards. Find the one that suits your budget and amount of track use and how competitive you want to be.

I'd be interested in that trackday too.
