you need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated club first. Warwick District Sporting Car Club can help you out there too, or go to http://www.cams.com.au/Content.asp?PageID=Clubs and search for other clubs in QLD. Some of the other cheap ones are MGCCQ, NDSCC, HSCC, SPARC. best way is to join a club, they'll have the form and you can pay them and get a temp licence on the spot until the official one comes through from CAMS.

Hornibrook Motorsport 5 Basalt St Geebung (07) 3865 1072 Craig is the QLD distributor for Kuhmo, who make a very good semi slick - won Targa Tas in 04 or 05 and alot of top club level cars are using them up here. but he can supply any of those brands you mentioned, and he will probably be the best price in town.

results came through this afternoon - we got 3rd outright in the speed classification, including 2 stage wins, which is very pleasing on the Federal 595SS road tyres. We were 2 seonds behind 2nd place, so that mistake on Prince Henry Drive stage was a costly one... Nevermind, we had an absolute ball! If there's anyone out there who ever dreamt of doing a Targa event, make sure you enter this next year! Cost is next to nothing once you have a CAMS licence, and its so much fun I can't believe its legal!

Tyres you use(d) and how u would rate them

PSI_GTSII, I think you'll be happy with them. We just got results from the QLD Challenge - we were 3rd outright in Speed classification on the 595SS, with everyone else up the pointy end on semi-slicks. We made a bit of a mistake on one of the stages too, out on the grass/dirt on the outside of a hairpin, which would have cost a few seconds, and considering we were 2 seconds behind 2nd place that looks like it cost us a place. I'm pretty happy with the results for normal road tyres. -
it's a much more interesting track! Warwick District Sporting Car Club run the series. Teresa Campbell is the Event Secretary (or was last time I ran there). yeah, you do need a naviator for these events, but they only need to hold a L2S licence. This event is great fun - you get to play Targa Tasmania for a day - well, sort of... the stages are alot shorter and the navigation sections don't exist in Targa, but these are still pretty special events. good atmosphere amongst the competitors too. and Prince Henry Drive is great fun at full noise!

click here for a few PICS I added in another thread. still waiting for results, but it was an awesome event - it always is!

no results yet - arrgghh, but here's a few pics from Prince Henry Drive and Wivenhoe closed road stages:

cars don't have to be log booked or have a cage. only need a CAMS L2S licence. They do run to CAMS categories, eg Improved Production, Sport Sedans etc, but they will find somewhere for you to run if you don't quite fit the rules of Improved Production - sport sedans or maybe marque sports or thundersports. Its a popular series so you have to register by the end of the year if you want to get into next year's events. I haven't had a look for their contact details yet...
-
They run a great series out at Morgan Park, called the QLD SuperSprint Series. I'll dig up some contact details if you want? There are 2 series A and B, each consisting of 4 rounds over the year and utilising some of the different layouts available there. Its very cheap - last time I did it in 2004 it was $88 per weekend! They are 2 day events. Its a Supersprint format with 2 cars taking off side by side from a standing start, and 4 cars on the track at once. Its up to you wether you race with the other car or not. passing is permited. Supersprints are seen as the stepping stone to circuit racing. I'll be doing the series again next year.

nice spot up there. makes a good stage too! I'm waiting for results to come out sometime this week, but I think we did okay, except for a bit of a moment on Prince Henry Drive that would have cost us a few seconds sliding around the outside of a corner in the dirt/grass... and I never go very well in motorkhanas - but there was only one very short khana so I shouldn't have lost too much there. Shane Topping who finished 1st outright co-driver in Dutton, crashed his 2006 STi heavily into a concrete wall on the drag strip on the third test, a slalom on the Willowbank drag strip, and that stage had to be cancelled. Hopefully they were both OK, we didn't hear anything about them afterwards... Anyway, we had an absolute blast driving on all these unique stages. this event is always the highlight of the year for me as far as motorsport events go.

I'm entered in the QLD Challenge Rally tomorrow in the GTR. The field includes the 6th outright driver and 3rd outright co-driver from QLD Dutton both in WRX's, among alot of other fast cars including worked WRX/STi and a few very fast classics like Jon Siddins 240Z, an experienced Targa campaigner and Classic Targa winner. So it should be a decent gauge of how I'm going with the GTR. I will be on normal road tyres not semi slicks, but still hoping to take it up to the fastest cars - we'll see how realistic that is tomorrow I guess! I've done the event before in my previous Datsun race car, and have an equal stage record on one of the closed road stages, before crashing on the next stage which slowed us down for the rest of the event with bent suspension and a damaged wheel bearing. I'd be surprised if the GTR is not faster even on the normal road tyres, so it should be pretty competitive. Its a similar format to a Dutton Rally (ie a Touring Road Event) but it has some navigation sections also and is a 1 day event. Alot cheaper too! The overall winner is the best of both navigation and speed event scores combined, but there is also a trophy for outright winner of the speed events which is what I'm more interested in. Although my Navigator is very good, and we probably have a god chance of the outright win - we have won these type of events before. There's 8 special tests over the course of the day including sprints at QR, a few closed road sections at Toowoomba, Gatton, and Wivenhoe, a dirt sprint on a nice smooth autocross track (its a rally after all! that's where my avatar is from too) and the inevitable one or two motorkhana tests... Should have some pics and results next week. unless I don't do any good in which case I'll keep quiet and hope no-one remembers this thread! here's a couple of vids from my old 1200 last time we did the event. Not the greatest camera angle, but the cage made it hard to mount my rather bulky camera any higher and still see out the front at all. It was either mount the camera the bar for this veiw or above it where you could only see the rear veiw mirror and the bonnet... Anyway, they'll give a little taste of the event. They are both 5.6M, so not dial-up friendly! Prince Henry Drive stage http://bscc.asn.au/gallery/CBQC-2004/HRDphd.mov5.6Mb check out the veiw! Tyres you use(d) and how u would rate them
hrd-hr30 replied to ZigenGT's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
which tyre you choose comes down to how competitive you want to be at those track days. The 595RS is not as soft as other semi-slicks which generally have treadwear of 60 or less, so they are designed for those who want to do a few track days and a bit of street driving without the expense of buying a second set of wheels/tyres for the track. I am very impressed with the grip of the 595SS tyres, and I've used them at Lakeside recently, where I expected they would be found lacking, but they were surprisingly good at 9/10ths and up to 15 consecutive laps, and I'm using them this weekend on the QLD Challenge road rally (like a Dutton style event) so we'll see how they go in the results! All the serious competitors use proper semi-slicks, but I expect to still be up there in the results on the 595SS. No doubt the RS would be faster and more consistent with its softer compound, stronger construction and larger tread blocks. if you can wait till the results from the QLD Challenge come in next week, where I'll be up against a bunch of modified WRX's and STi's on semi-slicks, as well as a bunch of rally cars and other fast club racers, it will be an interesting comparison... -

like I said, I've shown those people to be wrong before WRT the application of the LM rule. These examples are more straighforward than that issue. -

rear steering does have its own section - Steering and Suspension. but we're going around in circles. you want to interpret the rules as they suit you, and you're getting away with it - great. enjoy it while it lasts. -

it says WHEELS are free (plural). maximum RIM width (singular) the only restriction mentioned is for a singular rim, so so by your logic the others are free to do with as you please. the only difference is you know you'll never be able to sneak that one past the scrutineers, tech officers, and other competitors. hell, you could even argue that the wheel is part of the power steering system and therefore free! -
mate, I think from all the roadwork, slippery surface and 40kph speed limit signs mentioned in the first post that it was official roadworks... not the same kind of idiots who allegedly poured diesel on some corners. besides, that's as likely to have been some try-hard drifter wannabe as a disgruntled local.

I love Lakeside far more than noisey cars! And I personally hope QR do not get it. They are bad for club level motorsport, effectively pricing the reigon's sporting car clubs out of QR a few years ago when they decided they could get more money by running thier own sprint series on weekends. Council were looking for a consortium to manage the facility as a shared enterprise, so hopefully that will see PCYC and Total Driver in the best position, as QR will only be in it for the commercial opportunity. Peronally, I think LMRE did some good work earlier wrt Lakeside and holding PRSC to account for thier actions. But now that PRSC are actually going out of their way to re-open the facility I'm concerned LMRE may be doing more harm than good by hounding the Council over every little detail. Be thankful for the big picture victory, and let PRSC go about doing their thing in peace for a while. Did you really expect any level of goverment to run any sort of project on-time? patience LMRE! rather than having a dig at Council for rejecting one of the proposals, be thankful that it is one more step towards choosing a successful candidate!

sorry to hear that Geoff. here's to a speedy recovery! and Dale, I'm sure the in-car from the fat lady or 4dr Zed or whatever they're calling it after its recent spruce up will really whet your appetite. It certainly looks tuff with those 15*8"s now! there's always next year anyway. I'll try my best to fly the Skyline flag against all those WRX and STi's in the meantime.

plenty of people have died up there on their "sensible runs", that's why there is a heavy police presence! and its probably also why they are resurfacing the road with the coarse bluestone aggregate. It provides excellent grip in wet and damp conditions which are the norm up there in the rainforest section. Alot of that section of road had an almost mirror sheen to it and was very dodgy in those kind of conditions. Its a normal, commonly used surface, and there is always loose gravel left on it at first - that's unavoidable, and soon gets cleared off. Like predator, I don't see the problem.

so you check the regs for steering (9.13), and find that the only things you are allowed to do with a power steering rack are change the ratio, swap it with a manual steering rack, or swap it with another rack from another eligible vehicle. It does not say you can remove or delete it, so you can't (2.6). only the other components of the power steering system (ie other than steering rack/box) are free. There is no grey area in this rule for rear steering Just because you feel that the rules were not designed for cars with 4WS, does not mean they don't apply to cars with 4WS. Nor does the fact that one of your steering racks complies, allow you to ignore the rules for the other steering rack. EG, all 4 wheels have to meet the restrictions for width, not just one! and yes they use the singular 'rim' in that rule too. -

ah-ha! see that's the fundamental problem! 2.6 The entire vehicle must remain unmodified except for specific freedoms allowed in these regulations and modifications necessary to comply with the General Requirements of Section 6 of the CAMS Manual. so if the rules don't specifically say you can do it, you can't. You simply can't take approach #2 where if the rules don't mention it you can do whatever you want! it doesn't work that way.
