Very sorry to hear David; we went through a very similar situation with our blue heeler. It's a real blow losing such a great companion like Kennedy. It may be too soon for some, but i went and picked out a new pup on the weekend of the week our bluey was put down. It really helped with cheering us up and lifting the spirit.

It'd be a very tedious task trying to open the door by somehow hooking onto and yanking the internal latches (especially if they are broken). Forced Door trim removal might be the only option mate.
