Cyl No. 6 Lean Out - Theory Vs Practical
ISL33P replied to ISL33P's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
what #7 ? so you are saying #6 injector will be the cause in every car. just seems strange that every #6 injector would cause such a common problem ?? that brings to light the argument about fuel rail and the positioning of the supply and return lines. -
Cyl No. 6 Lean Out - Theory Vs Practical
ISL33P replied to ISL33P's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
air bouncing off the back wall would cause, what some people call, a "dead" spot in the plenum which is where the air is having no effect on the plenums performance and is not being used by any cylinders. how did you come to this conclusion, was it just from looking at the piston/plugs/runners of the plenum or do you have egt's or flow numbers to confirm this ? there are theories that say bellmouths are no good and only increase turbulence and these same people support the chamfered edge runners as they come from factory. how do the bellmouths fix the problem ? i am not at all doubting what you are saying, i am only asking these questions for the sake of everyone reading, so please do not take offence to it. why does cyl no. 6 lean out ? after having read many threads lately in regards to this issue and knowing how much of a common problem it is for all (yes all rb's 20/25/26/30) i wanted to get peoples feedback on this. when flow bench testing any standard rb inlet manifold there is a common issue which continually arsies and causes many people problems when it comes to tuning and maintaining a healthy engine. cylinder no 6 flows considerably less air than other cyliders which in theory would cause rich mixtures (remember fuel flow is partially dictacted by pressure and not flow i.e. same fuel flow - as other cylinders - contributing to a rich mixture) but there is constant comments indicating that issues with cylinder no 6 (mainly detonation causing collapsed ring lands, blown head gaskets etc) are caused by the plenum flowing too much air to this cylinder. this is most common within rb26 discussions. is it really the lack of flow of oil/water to the rear of the crank/block ? how would you fix it ? does anyone have egt logs for each cylinder ? note - pressure should no come into this equation as it equal regardless of flow. ps - i am in no way trying to promote what i do. just trying to get some sort of consistency when it comes to the truth behind this, all to common, problem. does 6 have the same problem ? is there any difference in pressure for each injector on the tests you have done ? is this based on std inj's or different size ones ?

NIB is on the money. bare with me here i have a point (hopefully), what is the most common cylinder/piston to sieze or break/crack or just fail in general on a lot of lightly modified engines ? i am asking about lightly modified engines/cars, upto 350rwhp, as this is what the majority of people have.

nice vid's stocky and buster. have to love the sound of the ext gate. where did the 8300rpm rev limit post go ?
-
in short yes. just take into conisderation what you want from the car and how you drive it and how far you want to push it. it is not a matter of what everyone else thinks, as long as you are happy with the end result and the tuner is smart enought to keep decent afr with a reasonable amount of timing, you shouldn't have any problems which will make for a saftely barrier from bad fuel etc. having said that sensibly, go for it, people play down the standard engines because they themselves have tried to run stupid amounts of boost with the std turbo, stk injectors and computer and wondered why it blew up, please give me a break. ps - throw some fuel additives to make it even safer.

good stuff neil. it is refreshing to see something built by the owner instead with some different ideas instead of the run of the mill stuff coming out of workshops.

my 2 cents and a bit, which has been tested by flow testing a fuel rail, says that there is a lack of (air) pressure towards the return end of the rail which will cause a leaner air/fuel mixtures towards the return end cylinders. the best way to solve this is get a twin feed fuel rail with a single return which more evenly distributes fuel to all cylinders. these can be found (cough cough, see sig) a lot cheaper than those you have mentioed which still retain a single return line (poor flow). very ricer like r31nismoid, does nothing but add looks. once you have the rail, all you need is a brass y-piece and some fuel line and they bolt straght into the standard position. one thing to make sure is to keep the length of each supply line the same length from the y-peice to the rail as the length of fuel line also dictates amount of pressure available to each end. this i haven't tested but was told to me by at least a couple of pro-dragsters that have chased lean mixtures back to something so simple like fuel hose length.
