Advice on Turbo selection RB20DET, Drift.
180bfj20det replied to superclarkey's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
GT30R. Up to 300rwkW and excellent response. I make 5psi at 2000rpm and full boost by 4k. Undisputed, the best turbo for a 2L. -
I posted some pics of the CES dumppipes on the N1 turbos I fitted to my bro's GTR. Search and you'll see them bolted on. But in terms of quality, they are the best. I have never seen something like them internally. They are smooth, no dags and flow very well. I have never seen HKS ones tough. Im pretty sure they must be good.

fs: Std GTR BOVS

PM sent. Respond please :kick: Cheers -
If you want to restrict your turbos, then use the factory dumppipes!!! Good choice on getting a custom set. The factory dumppipes are crap. My brother and I fitted new dumppipes to his car along with N1 turbos. The car sounds a lot throatier now...hence the exhaust has been opened up. Seriously, if you can fit some custom dumps...which you will, you'll be very happy with the result. You will make more power. No doubt about it. Especially you have twin 3" exhausts which would be going to waste with those fatory dumps. You're system is only as strong as your weakest link, in your case, the only link being the dumps. Keep us posted.

Saw on a current thread that knock levels can be measured. How is this done and what do the numerals 20, 40, etc mean (units)? Can this be mocked up on any car? Thanks

One turbo is always better than two providing the turbo setups (ie 2 vs 1) are both of the same design. I have been through this before. Anyway, a single GT3540 will give you 400rwkW or with your capacity you maybe better of with the GT40 or bigger if you want. Id stick with the first two, probs the GT40. Anyways, there is no excuse for going twin. Garrett make ball bearing turbos that can support 2000hp (GT60, compressor 141mm). You will be happier going single. Cheaper, more efficient (ie boost earlier and more power) and much much easier to service. Run 8.5-9:1 compression and GT40 and 400rwkW on street fuel and probs + octane booster. Ofcourse if you want to make huge HP....use on of garretts big BBGT turbos. Please PM your email address (MSN/hotmail if possible) as Id love to hear about your progress. Good luck

What is the best engine running temperature?
180bfj20det replied to 180bfj20det's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Just to let you know, I've never been beaten by a V8, RB25 or RB30-powered car on the street and that's with my old FJ20 setup (everything standard apart from cooler, cpu and exhaust + boost)...The only thing that beats me is a modified GTR and oh yeah, some rotaries. So I'll let you ponder on that bias slogan if you want, but as they say, winners are grinners and Im certainly grinning. My car gets either good remarks or bad one's, the bad one's mostly from dickheads in their commodores with crappy NA engines trying to break the 200hp barrier. Just because an engine has cubes, doesnt mean its good, but cubes can be good. Don't knock what you can't beat. I respect all performance cars and everyone's personal choice. It may be your personal choice to like large engines, but you dont need to undermine the smaller counterpart...There are a lot of excellent 2L engines out there, some that can make 600hp reliably. Just for matter of interest, where does your bias come from and what leads you to pay out the 2L clan??? Hope I didnt offend anyone. -
FJ20 T3 + custom dumppipe
180bfj20det posted a topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
A/R 0.63 (larger of the FJ20 t3's). Dumppipe is an excellent design. Check it out on the FJ20.com forums (for sale section) for pics and more info. Turbo is in great condition and has done less than 5000lm since last rebuild. Polished rocket cover. Reason for sale is upgrade to GT30R. $500 firm for the lot. -
Threads types on GT series BB turbos?? Metric...etc
180bfj20det replied to 180bfj20det's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks I rang horsepowerinabox.com. He deals the garrett BB GT range and sells everything to go with them and so I trust his reply. He mentioned that the GT series do have an internal restrictor and so you dont need a fitting with a restrictor. You DO NEED however the reverse flare. Thanks -

Please, if you run a BB GT series turbo, tell me if you run this restrictor please as I want to do the right thing. Ill contact horsepowerinabox 2mrw anyways. Cheers -
I think my turbo is about to pack it in
180bfj20det replied to Dice's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Your turbo is not completelty rooted cause it still works, so thats a +ve. Take your intercooler piping off from the turbo outlet and have a look how much oil there is. If there is an excess amount, your seals could be going/gone. How much play is there in your shaft? -
Yep and plus this kit is cheap. Check it out on eBay. I had a look at buying this kit and I learnt a few things. First off all its not a Garrett T70. Look at its specs and try to match it the proper garrett T70. Nothing matches nor does it to any other genuine turbo. Secondly, the manifold, BOV and wastegate are all imitations of the HKS material. Dont expect to get anything like you saw in the eBay pic as it simply wont be the case. I always go by the moto "if its to good to be true... then it's probably too good to be true". I know of someone who has bought that mock-up T70 turbo and it lasted 2 months. If you were to get a genuine T70 from garrett, it would be no good on a CA nor a SR or RB20. Im scoping out the extra cash to get a proper GT30 and tial wastegate as I almost got bitten for that kit. You have be warned! Best of luck in making your decision and if you do buy it, let me know how it goes.

Got an external 044. Been to many hose suppliers blah blah. Just want to fit the dam fuel pump. Where can I get fittings for this pump on the gold coast? Ive tried petroject. Thanks

No...but thanks for offering!!

Nope, the nismos are installed!! What he didnt mention that its only running 7.5psi. It you rode in it you wouldnt think so because it is pretty fast (it doesnt drive like stock as he mentioned...he's just to use to his old power output at 13 psi: 233rwkW). The nismo turbos have made a big difference because I remember the car running about 8psi with the standard turbos and the difference is quite noticible. Its probably making 190-200 rwkW at his current boost level which means at 17psi it will go really nice. BTW his old turbos are going on my car... yes a twin turbo FJ20! Cheers

Anyone know what the trim sizes of the compressor and exhuast wheels for the 32 GTR turbos are? Ive searched the site, but found many pages but nothing I wanted. Cheers

Need to get hold of two GTR T28 dumppipe flanges. I have some SR20DET T28 flanges but these a much different to the GTR T28 flanges. Does anyone know someone who keeps GTR T28 (r32) dumppipe flanges (price?) on the Gold Coast? (cant be stuffed waiting for laser/water cutters). Cheers

You dont need a pod to make the flutter noise. My car runs no air filter, just blades to air, I drive it rarely as its in its finishing stages. But it makes fluttering noises like crazy (I have no BOV as FJ20s were never installed with them). It sounds great but I am fitting a BOV and filter this weekend. The BOV is to stop oil from spraying back out of the turbo, not much but any is too much. The sudden rush of air going back against the compressor as your throttle is closed on boost, places undue stress on your bearings = significantly increased wear and tear.
