I dont know if the R32 has the misfire at high revs due to high boost! Can any1 clarify this?
-
Nope! I've tried numerous combinations with heat range and gap, and what I'd recomend for street use is a heat rating of 6, and a gap smaller than 0.8mm. If you have an aftermarket ECU, or a SAFC, then this recomendation doesn't really apply to you... With stock ECU, b/c the mixtures can get really rich, you need a warmer plug that can burn some of the carbon deposits off the plug. The colder plug will not last long, as it will get fouled very quickly (a couple of weeks), and will need to be pulled out to be cleaned. A warmer plug will go a lot longer before it needs a clean. As for gap, I've tried 0.9 with a colder (7) plug, 0.8 and 0.7 as well. I found the smaller gap to be the best.... But like I initially said, a warmer plug and smaller gap is best for street use.. I'd say NGK BCPR6E (NO S). This has a heat rating of 6, and the v groove. Gap this anywhere between 0.65 and 0.75, and your Line will run much better (remember, only if you nave stock ECU meaning rich mixtures). At this configuration the 5000rpm misfire on the R33 happens much less! I only see it when I have been driving the car for more than 30 mins... weird! Zahos

Thanks for that Mega! So now I'm left with no clues as to what it could be! I would think that if it were bearings that it would do it more consistently? A friend had the bearings go on his air-con, and that made bad noise consistently, wouldn't the bearings off any component working off the fan belts do the same thing if they were buggered? Anyhow, summer is coming so I guess I wont have to worry about this one for a while!

have a read through this thread adam http://forums.skylinesdownunder.co.nz/show...=&threadid=7186 I'm just trying to figure out if the 2 probs are related.... Anyone else that has the noisy start up problem hav a squeaky clutch? Even if you have one prob, and not the other, please tell us, and how long yoou've had the problem. Thanks George

There was a thread on this a while ago, but no resolution. I have the same problem.... When its cold, you start the car, and you get a screech (intensity of sound depends on how cold it is), and it will last about 1 - 2 seconds. I've had this prob for over 6 months now, and I have no idea what it is. As it only does it when i start the car, and the outside ambient temeperature is low, AND it only lasts about 1 second, I haven't bothered to fix it! And no it's not the fan belts, Doubt it is the alternator bearings, as it would do it more consistently... Can anyone else that has this problem, please tell us if you also have a squeeky clutch! As in does your clutch squeek sometimes when you depress the pedal? Zahos

Before you pull your headlights apart to polish the inside.... ask yourself this question.... If I cant pull then apart, and they are sealed, what could have possibly happened so that I need to poiish the inside??? Answer: nothing, the inside is fine I also thought it was inside, and I too tried to pull them apart... But then I read a thread on here or SDU ages ago about giving them a good cut and polish, and it worked! Mine were VERY badly scratched on the inside corners, and looked horrible. I used industrial strength cutting compound (no polish) a couple of times to get the plastic flat (and I scrubbed the crap out of them too). Then I gave them a cut and polish a few times, and now they are crystal clear. As far as I know those covers are sealed, and nothings gets in, nor out, so trying to pull apart to polish the inside doesn't seem very logical to me. Give it a try first.... you have nothing to loose. Just make sure you let the stuff dry properly out of the sun, and then scrub the crap out of them. If they are really bad, use a buff pad on a drill or grinder to buff them. That should do the trick!

Until I read this post, I didnt even know that any skylines were available in South Africa..... I was just reassuring that the R31 with the RB30E supply is plentiful in OZ. Do you have a link to any pics of the SGLi?
-
exactly! My mate needed a car to tow a trailer, and went for the silhouette b/c of the LSD.
-
There are sh1t loads of R31's down under (well I know there are in vic anyway). The RB30E was produced here from 86 to early 91. There are also R32's, R33's and R34's, but for towing, I'd suggest to just stick to an 4 door Aussie R31. Do a search on http://www.trading-post.com.au/search.asp?...Name=Automotive with skyline as the key word, and a price b/w $1000 and $8000, and it should come up with a fair bit. Zahos

In case any1 is interested, here is a pic of a S1 with eyelids

if it was too hot to touch, most likely oil. Dont know what it could mean though. Best get it checked out, b/c any1 could easily lead you down the wrong path without actually looking at it...
-
If there is moisture leaking from between the manifold, and the head then ur gasket is almost definately gone (unless ur manifold is cracked, which is unlikely). Check if it is moisture, and not oil though! As for ur lifters, I dont know... Maybe ur mechanic is also right, maybe he mis - diagnosed it! Couldn't say without looking at it. If u really want to be certain, get a second opinion from another mechanic... or even an exhaust place... Reason I say it is more likely ur gasket is because i have seen this on 4 skylines in total, so I assume it is common.

It wont cause any damage (if it is a blown gasket), it's just irritating! If it isn't that, then I cant give you any recomendations b/c I dont know what the problem is and what possible damage can come from it... Just check one morning when it is cold, by wetting your hand, and placing it in various positions around where the exhaust manifold bolts onto the head, and revving the engine until the sound is very audiable. Well if the gasket is gone, then it is a leak. I dont know how these wreck besides having loose or missing screws on your exhaust manifold. Mine had a missing screw that had brocken off over time (thats how weak these screws are on the RB motors!) I might be wrong, but I have had this problem and seen it on 2 other skylines, all with the same symptoms you are describing... Best to take to a mechanic b/c if the screw was loose or off for a while, the manifold warps over time with heat if there is nothing to hold it in place. You might need to get it machined nice and flat! I helped a mate of mine with his (changed the gasket), and because his screws were missing for a while, the manifold warped. After replacing the gasket, the problem was still there b/c of the warped manifold. So we took it to get it machined, replaced gasket, and problem gone!
-
definately! With heat metal expands, and also the moisture in your exhast gases help seal the hole! Mine was audiable for the first 5 mins of driving, and eventually got longer as the hole got bigger.
-
first look to see if any bolts are missing on the exhaust manifold - especially on the last cylinder. If there are, then it is almost certainly your gasket. You can also put your (wet) hand around it while the engine is cold and being reved! If none of these yield any results, then remove the manifold and replace the gasket anyhow!
-
Wont cause any damage, but it gets louder and worse! If you do it yourself, shouldn't cost you more than say $15 - $20 for the gasket. If you take it to a mechanic, it will cost you for labour too! I'd say between $100 - $200. But in either case, be VERY CAREFUL when taking the bolts of the manifold! Make sure you soak them in WD40 for at least 30 mins!!! Some of the se bolts will break off regardless, but the more broken bolts, the more headaches!
-
I also had this problem in my RB30E, and it turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket.... It had sprung a leak, right at the back, and would make a ticking sound when cold. Once it had warmed up, the sound would go away.

Yeah, thanx meggala, only it looks kinda funny! I didn't plan how to mount the cooler, so when i took it to get bigger pipes welded on the end tanks, I wasn't really fussed how they were done! Because of that now, it sits on an angle (about 20 degrees!!!) Oh well.... At least it does the job!
-
I know of one, but they are in melb! Just look up alloy welding places where u r, and they should be able to help you. Even places that do work on boats should be able to help. I took my IC to a boat place and they did the welding, and they could have done mandrel bends for me, but it wasn't really worth it! Hope that helps

I have an intercooler off a VR4. It's 420 x 210 x 75. Since I've put it in I noticed boost hardly spikes now, and the cars performance is more consistant! I wouldn't recomend going any smaller than this!
-
If i had the cash to do that, i would probably get new end tanks made up for the cooler instead.... much cheaper alternative. The intercooler looks a bit funny sitting on an angle, but it doesn't bother me enough to spend big bucks on it. I'm looking to buy a house now, so spending more cash on the car when i dont need to is out of the question for me...

Well at the moment i have stainless steel mandrel bends in place, but this causing a problem! If you look at the pic of my cooler, you will see that one of the pipes runs under the coller to utilise the factory plumbing. The pipe I had made up to run under it, hangs very low! I cannont cut the pipe coming out of the end tank any more as I have already chopped as much as i can off. I cannot cut any more off the pipe running under any shorter either. At the moment, the intercooler is sitting on an angle so that the pipe doesn't hang too low. If i use A rubber hose with an elbow, I can get around this problem because then i can have bend coming right after the pipe on the end tank finishes. The pipe would then sit directly under the cooler, and this wouldn't be an issue.
-
Yeah, swealling might be a bit of an issue, especially once it's heated up a bit. I need the hose on the turbo side, so it will heat is definately an issue. I'm in Avondale heights, right accross the other side of town (Near highpoint and showgrounds)

I just called the manufacturer 1800 032 037, and asked them for a 3" 90 degree bend - part no: 3316566S The chick on the phone didnt know if it was reinforced, and she also didnt know if it were rated to a certain preasure or heat rating. She put me through to an "expert", but he wasnt at his desk!
