Black R32gtst Type-m. Brand New Turbo.
traphead posted a topic in For Sale (Private Whole cars only)
I have my December '89 model R32gtst 5spd manual, RB20det up for sale. I am moving to the USA for 2 years at the start of Feb, so I need to sell by then. Located in Adelaide. Link to carsales ad: http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/&a...icle_id=3782453 The car is getting a new GT28RS turbo installed asap. I have the turbo, and tilbrooks will be installing. Installation is already paid for as this is a replacement turbo. I expect the car to make around 210-220rwkw with a quick response. All supporting mods are basically new. I have been the only owner since import and have only done 5000km in the car. There is currently 53500km on the clock. Power mods include: Brand new Garret gt28RS turbo. New water/oil lines for the turbo. Custom stainless front/dump pipe (this will be modded/replaced to fit new turbo). Trust Power Extreme II stainless catback exhaust. Catco high flow cat. Hybrid bar and plate intercooler Sard 550cc injectors New splitfire coilpacks. Bosch 040 in-tank fuel pump. Apexi PowerFC (AP eng model) no hand controller Apexi AVCR ebc (stealth install in center console compartment - can be closed to hide the avcr) Apexi power intake pod filter Other mods: 17" Linear Sport rims (8" wide fronts, 9" wide rears) Rear guards rolled. New st115 Falken Azenis tyres on the front. New front suspension and control arm urethane bushes. Lowered suspension (came lowered fron Japan) Xtreme ceramic cushioned heavy duty clutch. HICAS lock bar R33 front seats. Momo steering wheel Black window tint (including sunroof) Front strut brace Alpine CDA-9831 cd/mp3 head unit Cadence 4 channel 700w amp MbQuart 6.5" front splits 12" Orion sub (not currently installed but will supply with the car). Remote central locking. Cyclops alarm and immobiliser. Other details: All electronics are in working order. Exterior is in very good condition, there are a couple of scratches and paint chips, but excellent compared to similar age skylines. Interior is in near perfect condition - no gauges plastered over the dash. Original skyline floormats. New rear parcel shelf. Electric sunroof in perfect working order. AC needs to be regassed, but has been serviced with new fittings installed where necessary (gas removed when last turbo was installed). The car has made 210rwkw with the current turbo, a gt30 with .48a/r turbine housing. This was very laggy and didn't hold boost - hence the new turbo. Work has been done by Shaun Dunn at Boostworx and Tilbrooks. Both will verify the mechanical integrity of the engine. All mods were purchased new and have been in the car for a maximum of 1000km. Please feel free to PM or post for further details, or call me on 0412224839. PRICE NOW $13500. Down from $15900. Email [email protected] for more pics/details or give me a call. Nathan -
It is interesting to read peoples opinion on this topic. I just wish I was more informed when i purchased the turbo, although I was ASSURED that the turbo was perfect for my application. After spending much time reading about the operation of turbos, I now realize what such a bad design I have been sold. I'll let you all know that I don't want to disclose the company from which I purchased the turbo from at the moment, since I am still dealing with them to try and resolve the problem. I will let you know that they are quite reputable though. The turbo was apparently custom made from all garrett parts. This is why they have custom machined out a garrett 0.48 exhaust housing to fit at GT30 turbine wheel. And yes it is ball bearing so I am way out of pocket. Add to this that my car has been sitting at workshops for over 6 months now while attempting to INCREMENTALLY come to a solution leads to a very disappointing and frustrating situation. Oh what a beatiful thing hindsight is!!!

Is that true that the stock rb20 turbine housing has an a/r of 0.63?? I always thought it was 0.48, or was told that anyway. Sorry don't have pics of the housing, its currently on the car at a workshop. I cant imagine that diverting waste gate air into the path of the turbine within the housing can be all that good. I can only guess its adding to my current problems. Considering i paid 2.5k for the turbo and line kit you can see why i'm not too happy with the results i'm getting. Can someone confirm this. Because if thats true, a smaller turbine housing has no chance of holding boost.

It has been established that the turbo is the problem. Many professional mechanics have looked at it and come to the same conclusion. To the companies credit they have attempted to resolve the problem by modifying the turbo (new smaller wheels, comp cover), but i have had enough now. I have been without a car for 6 months now while this problem has been worked on. Yes the a/r of the housing IS the same as the standard rb20 housing, but the turbine housing is new. Its a funny looking thing. The wastegate is covered (not openly exposed to the dump). The dump has a simple circular inlet (similar to an external gate turbo). Looking from the back into the housing you can only see the turbine wheel as the wastegate is hidden by a cover. This means gas from the wastegate must flow into the stream of gasses exiting the turbine wheel. I'm not sure if this has any sort of effect, but it is the reason i needed a custom dump fabricated. Thanks for the comments.

I'm not getting my numbers mixed up. This turbo was sold to me by a renowned company as a perfect solution for the rb20. It cost me a significant amount of money, let along the extensive modifications required to fit it (custom dump, spacer, custom elbow). Aparantly they have fit it multiple times to the rb20 with 'fantastic' results. I some how find this very hard to believe. I believe the turbo was a complete mismatch. Large core had too much intertia and caused the laggyness (the 0.48 turbine housing was meant to compensate for this). The small housing then restricts air flow at high revs and causes the boost to fall off. Not an optimal solution in my book!!

Firstly, I have a R32 with all supporting mods - pfc, avc-r, sard 550cc, bosch 040, intercooler, 3" exhaust, splitfires, pod. I bought a new turbo - at GT3040 with a 0.48 turbine housing (It was recommended!). This ended up being extremely laggy and would also drop off boost at higher rpm. The turbo has since had smaller gt28 wheels put in on both the compressor and turbine side, as well as a smaller 0.64 a/r compressor housing. However it still has a 0.48 a/r turbine housing. The response is now better, but the system is unable to maintain 16 psi of boost. The max it seems to be able to hold is 1 bar. I'm thinking this is due to the small size of the turbine housing, can anyone help clarify this? My car is currently at the shop and this issue needs to be sorted asap. I believe the turbo is now basically a gt2871 with a small 0.48 turbine housing - what kind of performance should i be expecting from such a system?? Thanks

Interested in the 18" tyres, are they still for sale? -
Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone out there has a pfc hand controller for an rb20det that i could borrow? My car is currently at tillbrooks. They would only need it for a day or two. thanks guys, any help is much appreciated. Nath

I seem to be having a similar problem, and we cant come up with a solution at the moment. Car is at the mechanics now. I just had a gt3040 with a .48 exhaust housing installed and it is having these same symptoms on the dyno. Boost gets cut when it reaches full boost and then spools up again. This occurs with and without the boost controller in the loop. And also occurs with different sized actuators. It seems like when the wastegate opens it doesn't close quick enough hence causing the drop in boost. When the waste gate eventually closes the turbo spools up slowly (rather linear) if running low boost, but spools up quicker at high boost then drops boost again when it reaches full boost. The wastegate doesnt appear to be sticky either (BSK you might want to check this on yours as it could be the problem, especially if it only occurs sometimes). The back pressure in the manifold is being checked today. Some people think that the GT3040 with a .48 is too big of a mismatch (compressor size in comparison to exhaust housing) and is causing the wastegate to do funny things. But, gcg assure me that they have sold plenty of these turbos for 2L engines and have never had a problem. Any ideas?

Thanks heaps for dropping the hand controller off. Shaun is tuning it this arvo. Should have it back tomorrow. Its only been there for five weeks now!

Bl4ck32, that may be handy for me too if you are going past Boostworx with the AP hand controller. My car is there at the moment getting a turbo and FC installed and I dont have a hand controller. Car has been there a while and i havent spoken to shaun for a while, but i'll speak to him tomorrow. He should be tuning it this week, so he will probably need one if he hasn't got one. (I kinda assumed he had one as he didn't mention that he would need one when i dropped the car off.) Cheers.

Oosh, the company you work for doesn't happen to be located at tech park does it? And yes, I am an engineer in the defence industry too. Quite funny reading this post and how many engineers there are. I wouldn't say I am exactly happy with my job either and am considering other industries. Just seems like a bit of a waste considering I spent 5 years getting 2 degrees. I think you just have to find something you are happy doing. My 2c anyhow.

I'm after a rb25 turbo for a highflow project. I'd be happy with just the compressor housing and central bearing housing. So if anyone has upgraded their turbo through hpinabox or racespec (i.e. used thier own turbine housing on a garret model) i'd be extremely happy to take the remainder of the turbo. cheers

Interchanceable Turbo Housings And The Results?
traphead replied to CEF11E's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I was going to go for the highflow to avoid installation costs, being able to keep the same lines and all. GCG basically said that the turbo would be limiting the power output in the case of the highflowed RB20 turbo. Thats why i though a larger compressor housing with the same turbine housing would allow for larger power without bringing in tons of lag. Michael said the best option for the rb20 is actually a GT3040, but with a .48 turbine housing. (They bore the housing out to fit the larger wheel). The small turbine housing causes quick spooling and the large wheels and compressor housing allow for large power. I was going to go for this option at $2450 for the whole internally gated system (including lines and actuator), I was just concerned about installation costs. Would need a spacer plate, new elbow joint to intercooler, new joiner fron afm to compressor inlet and a new flange on the exhaust (which could be an issue since i have a split dump). -
Interchanceable Turbo Housings And The Results?
traphead replied to CEF11E's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
"i have a s2 rb25 turbo with vg30 exhaust housing and i have 262.4 hp atw this is on an rb20 manual" Thats interesting master_d. At what rpm does the boost come on? Would you say it is laggy at all on the RB20? I'm trying to make a decision on a new turbo for the rb20 at the moment. I was looking at the highflow option, but Michael from GCG said that the RB20 highflow would run out at around 220-230rwkw. He also mentioned that an RB25 or VG30 would be quite laggy on the RB20 due to the flow restrictions of the engine. I was then considering a RB25 highflow with a RB20 turbine housing (I havent talked with him about this yet) to reduce the lag. This doesn't seem worthwhile if the turbine housings are basically the same size as cubes has mentioned. Any ideas what is the best highflow combination for the RB20det guys?? (All supporting mods present of course). -
Yep i'd like to know where to get those bosch afms from too! Seems like a much better idea than going second hand.

R32 Bits N Peices
traphead replied to simmyb's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
Are the indicators in good condition? ie is the top bracket that holds it in place still good? Where abouts are you located? cheers -
Can i still get in on this? After one without the hand controller. I can make the payment asap. cheers Nath

Bought a turbo 5 speed r32 from him in february. Car was a good deal, just needed some bushes replaced and hicas locked out. Like BigMickey said, he gets lots of tyre kickers wasteing his time. Its sometimes hard to get in touch with him and prices are firm. Just make sure you have a good look at the car before taking it.
