Has Anyone Gained Hp From Cdi Ignition Alone
WetGTR replied to TurbostyleR's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
The 3 output drivers from the Autronics will give you no other choice then to run wasted spark. The only other way would be to replace the ECU with something that has 6 output drivers and a CDI unit that has 6 input drivers. It's not the coils that will make any difference, it's the ECU & CDI unit. The coils are just the dumb unit and spark when told to by the CDI. Note: the MSD DIS-4 is only a 4 driver unit so on a 6 cylinder car you can only use 3 drivers which means you'll be runing the wasted spark setup. The Autronics CDI has only 4 drivers aswell. I know the Motec ECU and CDI's run 6 input & 6 output drivers. -

You will have to find out if the PFC has output drivers to run the MSD Unit. I have also heard that you shouldn't run the Mercury Coils from a MSD DIS-4, can't take it and blows up. Something about the coils having almost no resisstance. -

Has Anyone Gained Hp From Cdi Ignition Alone
WetGTR replied to TurbostyleR's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I agree, the standard coils would be the weak link but not to a major degree. This being said the coils are not too expensive anyway and worth the expense if your in a high HP bracket, otherwise I don't think that its worth it. Mercury Outboard coils are @$75.00 each x 6 = $450 plus leads, brackets and other installation costs. Maybe the money could be spent on mods to take advantage of the extra spark, ie; a tune which I beleive will give an overall better result. If budget allows - get everything! -

I have been looking into CDI setup's a bit further. I have just purchased the Autronics 500R CDI unit which has 4 input drivers which I can only use 3 of them on a 6 cylinder engine in a wasted spark setup. I also looked at my Autronics SMC ECU and noticed there are only 4 output drivers anyway which means I can only run the wasted spark setup. I noticed a few people using the MSD DIS-4 setup and they too have only 4 inputs, so on a 6 cyclinder car you must run the wasted spark setup. First check your ECU and find out how many output drivers you have before you start looking into the CDI side. No point getting a 6 channel CDI which your ECU cannnnot drive. Manybe the reason so many people are using the MSD DIS 4 (4 driver units) The Motec systems have 6 channel drivers and their CDI's have 6 input channels - the ideal setup! I spoke to my tuner and another very high regarded tuner and both explained the difference between Motec systems and the Autronics CDI setup and they both said that the coils will have to work out twice has hard as it fires 2 spark plugs (1 being wasted) but can recover very easily as aftermarket coils were design to run 4-6 cylinder engines anyway. In saying this they did state that the stock coils will do the job anyway but they are not designed for CDI and become heat soaked much more easily in a continuing high demand situation. -
The Garrett T04Z also has the split design. I post up pictures tomorrow morning of the ID tag & the rest of it - It's off the car anyway so its easy.

Cracked Spark Plug Resulting Into Damages?
WetGTR replied to driftspec32's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
That white part is ceramic - very tuff and can withstand alot of heat. The reason why they use that material in the first place. It needs to be removed full stop! This will really do some damage, don't know how you could do it without removing the head, have to think about that one. -
One more for the BIG SINGLES !! Z = POWER & RESPONCE

RPMGTR would know the difference between the Turbo's - he has done both with similar mods.

32gtr How To Get From 300 To 350@wheels?
WetGTR replied to Skorj's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Get yourself a set of cams, but in saying that this should be under advisment with a tuner that has done alot of GTR's. At least then you have a performance path to follow. IMHO go for a freer flowing exhaust - might just be the cat in your case, cams with adj timing gears - more air and fuel. The GT-SS turbo's are great but be realistic with the gains, 300-330awkw is all you'll proberly get on pump fuel. -
Rob is the Skyline Freak there, he goes by the username of rob82. Chip Torque do good tunes, Lochlan would be rated in the elite tuners of Australia. If you think about it he designes ECU's piggybacks and stuff so he must have an idea how to get them working properly. The only downside is they are not cheap!! You have to decide on how much your willing to pay for a tune.

I wonder if there is any difference between the HKS T04Z and the Garrett T04Z?

You can use standard coil packs no problem. It's just that using something like the mercury outboard coils or bosch coils are mainly used for methonal or NOS applications where they want that bit extra so it's considered an over kill - but I like over kill. Have you got a good price on these Mercury Outboard Coils TurbostyleR? Been looking for a good price on them. If anyone can get good prices on them, please let me know. -
There seems to be alot of the manufactures that use other manufactures products. HKS use Garrett Turbo's - but at least these are modified versions. I hate to see the same item sold by another company for a higher price. Thats just crap! I had alot of confidence in Tomei - so far always made a great product. Now have to be a bit careful not to get screwed! I If I want a Nissan product, I would of bought it from Nissan (unless I knew it was Nissan and it was cheaper buying else where)

Boost spike can come from 2 area's 1. Boost control unit 2. Boost creep - The wastegate is too small and there is not enough exhaust flow out. I think in your case, only 3 psi above stock, should be answer no.1

Maybe at Willowbank one day Nice result anyway, wasn't having a go at you just wanted to show the same turbo but at the same boost setting as yourself. It's not easy cracking the 400kw mark so well done. I want 450kw just like R32-GTS!!!! More boost I hear
