When I was really young I went on a family holiday down the south coast (NSW). I remember running towards to ocean yelling something like "Look daddy, the sea.. the sea!"... too bad I was on top of a 10m cliff. I probably still hold the record for the fastest time down that cliff. I came out of it with no front teeth and lots of cuts/bruises. Good thing dad's a dentist!

Well today I bought a K&N panel filter online from Motorpoint.com.au for $117. SuperCheap Auto wanted $140, so I'm happy. Thanks for all the advice and for sharing your experiences. You guys are all champs. Take it easy.

Someone just told me that they dyno'd 2 civics - one with pod, one with panel and the panel came out tops. Bother cars were otherwise identical. Is this possible?

Since pod filters are illegal unless enclosed, how would a good panel filter (such as K&N) compare with a pod? I can't see the panel filter allowing anywhere near as much airflow. Also, should I just go ahead and put a pod filter in my '89 celica? It's not like I'm gonna get pulled over and inspected right?

I've heard that pod filters are illegal unless housed in a "filter box" - in which case you might as well just fit a panel filter. Anyone know if this is true?

2fardown - correct, I don't want a 10sec car (or even a 13 sec car)! I'm after that feeling you get when you know the car's got more power/grunt/oomph in reserve just in case you need it. At the moment, I know when I'm pushing it and I'm getting beaten by my G/F in her 1.6L Lancer!!!
