  1. If you go very slowly, once you hit the free wheeling point what happens? Does the car continue to go forwards or does it roll back? If it rolls back you have an open diff. If it keeps going forwards slowly then you have a viscous LSD, this is better than an open diff but pretty average in the LSD stakes. viscous LSD is the minimum standard offering on all turbo skylines. viscous LSD needs a speed difference between the wheels before it does anything. a clutch type LSD needs applied torque from the driveshaft to do anything. torsen LSDs multiply the torque from the side with less traction to the side with more traction, so in the free-wheeling case you must apply some resistance to the free spinning wheel (slight pressure on the brakes) to get the diff to work and drive you over the obstacle. wiki and google will help you further.
  2. DOT 3, DOT4 and DOT 5.1 are all compatible, with the higher number having a higher boiling point. DOT5 is a silicon based brake fluid and does NOT absorb water, if you don't change it VERY frequently the water pools in your caliper and when it boils your brakes will fade very easily. The other fluids absorb water and don't reduce their boiling point as much so they are suitable for road cars with normal service schedules. DOT5 is for race cars only where the brakes are constantly serviced.
  3. Good son of rajab. There's so much wrong with that it actually makes my brain hurt. Back on topic, the Justjap cooling pro ones are OK however the bungs don't always seal perfectly (get a copper washer for the water temp sensor) and if you are still using the standard airbox (rather than a pod) the JJR ones don't allow the cool air scoop to fit properly. You can still leave the scoop sitting on top but it's not ideal. The Fenix radiators are lower on the air intake side so the factory scoop still fits. Besides that no problem at all with the JJR ones.
  4. Party of 9 paid for today details PM'd to Agro These dinners are awesome can't wait.
  5. still plenty of spots left? I missed this thread.. rallying the troops brb
  6. Actually, the best thing to take is a CD with female vocals on it. Any speaker can sound OK with lots of bass on instrumental stuff or doof doof, but female vocals in particular are midrange sounds, not much bass, and they have more audio information right in the crossover region between woofer and tweeter. Listen for clarity and natural sound in the voice. This will tell you that the speaker as a whole is engineered well (cone construction + crossover design) and not just a cardboard circle that flaps around and creates wooly bass.
  7. in-store is fine, as long as you're aware of what you just said. The cavity behind wall speakers varies and may have fewer reflection problems than a door mount but especially in the same shop it will give you a good relative gauge of the sound. Good quality speakers may sound thinner (ie less bass) in store because they're designed for a door size cavity not a wall size. The more reputable shops (of which there aren't that many) will have a speaker wall that gives each speaker a typical door size cavity behind them. At the end of the day the general rule is $ = quality. But I'm sure there are some shonky products that aren't worth the asking price so use your ears to find what sounds good to you.
  8. I bought a JJR bellmouth dump from just jap, it was surprisingly well made for the price. looks like they're out of stock at the moment.
  9. also, 6x9s are shit. the rears use 6 or 6.5" just install speakers that fit. +1 on sound deadening in the doors.
  10. The best advice I can give is LISTEN to a whole load of speakers. It takes time, but your ears will tell you what's good and what's not. Take a single test CD with you that you are very familiar with. I did this years ago and realised the following: Pioneer speakers are shit Sony speakers are even worse Alpine is meh Clarion is meh Boston Acoustics are really nice -> bought these ones Beware the path of audio nirvana though. I spent too much on the speakers in my car currently
  11. do this for NEW plugs only, because the washers compress. if you reinstall used plugs then you should do them up to a torque figure, which will be a fair bit less than 1/2 a turn after seating once the washers have already been compressed. i approximate with "feel", based on how tight it was to turn 2/3 a turn when first installing. then when reinstalling i put the same effort in to tightening which ends up being maybe 1/10th of a turn. it's not much. one day when i have money to burn i'll buy a torque wrench
  12. new entry form fax0r3d jim berry clutch means the tyres will be the only things slipping.. just the way we like it
  13. fixed everything besides the AM/FM antenna but I've got one waiting to go on, just ran out of time. By luck I found a silver pair of mirrors right away, they needed some minor repair work to get the folding action going again but all sorted now. the doors also need a polish, there are some scuff marks from where the mirrors hit the paintwork. passenger side has a slight dent too but i'll live with it for now. basically all sorted cheers dunc, sucks about the z. mongrels.
  14. if your back's hurting then your seating position isn't set up right. fix it before you do yourself further damage.
  15. the problem's a failing cap, a scratchy pot or a dry joint on the board, if you unscrew it and screw it back in again it *may* make slightly better contact but as soon as you leave your driveway it's going to work itself back to intermittent contact again. by pulling it all apart and putting it back together again you've jiggled the board around a bit but not really done anything meaningful towards fixing it. after I fixed my tacho it has been 100% perfect ever since.
  16. syntrax for gearbox and diff. GT-T with the standard viscous LSD will be fine as viscous is a sealed unit. If you have A-LSD then you need a diff oil with friction modifiers in it. definitely go synthetic. I had motul gear 300 in my diff and after 80,000km and a couple of texi days I dropped the oil and it was still honey coloured and smelled great.
  17. look up Fenix radiators. they look good. If you're an SAU club member (as opposed to just a forum member) then you might even get it a bit cheaper..
  18. Charlie thanks for the offer mate, unfortunately.. I'm sure it would get vandalised too. As a boatie myself (was actually fishing in Pittwater at the time) it would hurt to see that happen The people we know in the street have already been told what happened, one of them is the neighbourhood gossip so word WILL spread. I can only hope she got a bit of a surprise when the police turned up to question her, might make her think twice next time. Dave there are plenty of things I'd love to do.. this cow is exceptionally lucky I have the level of restraint that I do.
  19. tell me about it. 2 x smashed wing mirrors 2 x broken antennas on my car to go along with your rego woes. bad weekend for skylines we all shoulda just left them in the garage until monday
  20. LOL terry, love it. yeah random pizza deliveries is just slack to the pizza company. not their fault the woman is a complete flamin mongrel
