  1. Hrm... what i was trying to say is that the GPS Satellites cannot determine who and where you are. They are only sending packets of data down to earth, not receiving location data back from every device using GPS technology. From WikiPedia: A GPS receiver calculates its position by carefully timing the signals sent by the constellation of GPS satellites high above the Earth. Each satellite continually transmits messages containing the time the message was sent, a precise orbit for the satellite sending the message (the ephemeris), and the general system health and rough orbits of all GPS satellites (the almanac). These signals travel at the speed of light (which varies between vacuum and the atmosphere). The receiver uses the arrival time of each message to measure the distance to each satellite, from which it determines the position of the receiver (conceptually the intersection of spheres - see trilateration[5]). The resulting coordinates are converted to more user-friendly forms such as latitude and longitude, or location on a map, then displayed to the user. That OnStar system is a combination of GPS and a Cellular/GSM device. Its this second device that enables your position & other info to be broadcast to others. Attached to my carputer at the moment, i've got a simple GPS receiver, which allows my navigation software to know where it is. Big Brother cant track that! I would assume the professional car-tracking systems would work similarly to that OnStar system, where they utilise both GPS and GSM technology. That means telecommunication providers could triangulate your GSM signal, to work out roughly where you are. But the accurate GPS location data that is sent back to the monitoring company might be sent back with some form of encryption, which would mean unauthorised parties could not know exactly where you are. Also, do car-tracking systems remember their last known location, in the event that they are driven into tin warehouse? You may still be able to communicate with the car via GSM network, and the last known loc (ie at the entrance to the shed) might not be that far from where the car ends up.
  2. I always thought GPS was basically satellites throwing data down - i dont think GPS units send data back up to the satellite. Foxtel dishes cant send data back up, they are 1-way data transmission only. Satellite phones are obviously 2-way, but they have much much bigger antennas than a small gps receiver. If this is the case... big brother is not watching?!
  3. Make sure you WET SAND before you even think about polishing... i learnt this the hard way - spent hours with the diamond-cut compound, and only got a half decent finish. Then wet sanded, not sure if it was 1200 or 2000 paper, diamond cut and then another medium/light cut and it came up excellent. There is a saying that the time needed to paint something is used in the prep - but with acrylic paint, a lot is also needed in the finishing stage.
  4. You suck! I'm jealous!
  5. I've got a top alarm/immobiliser, professionally installed - but that doesnt help if you get mugged and someone takes your keys. A simple 1-way GPS device can give a bit of piece of mind, in that at least you can track the car. Even better (what i've been searching for) is a device which has an output port, which can be used to cut the power to the fuel pump.
  6. Oi! I'm after one of these as well, where did you get it from? Is it the simple type that you can send an sms to it to get the co-ords, or it will send you an sms should the power to the device be cut?
  7. If you're not installing alarms for a few days, any chance you can pop that manual in the post to me? And let me know how you want payment - paypal, eft, c/c etc?
  8. I like this idea, try going on a few different days and you'll have half the car done!
  9. Did you spray with acrylic or 2-pak paint? acrylic needs wet-sanding + buffing after clear coat has set.
  10. If you go to your local autoparts store, you'll see a wide range of polishing products. I generally stick to the Meguiars stuff. They have products which vary in how agressive they are, from diamond cut, thru to medium cut, light cut and swirl removers. I'd start down at the low end, maybe a light cut and see how you go with that.
  11. Getting back to the GTR (and staying away from comments re TopGear)... So the GTR has been knocked off on week #2 by that Ford GT thing. But they said the GTR was speed-limited to 180kph, where as the GT was hitting 240+ down the straight. How tricky is it to remove a speed limiter?
  12. Did you buy one off the group-buy on this forum?
  13. Why can't you just hook up a 12V battery charger? I thought as long as they were not on trickle charge, they'd pump enough amps into your system?
  14. How much did you pay for your Spit Fires, and where from? I'll be after a set soon, mine are starting to breakdown and i cbf trying to patch them up.
  15. Interesting read Paul, always wondered what happened at that top end if the AFM maxed out.
  16. I'd like to know if a carbon-fibre covered fibre-glass bonnet is defectable. Tried to search, but there are conflicting opinions on here.
  17. On the second show, they revealed that the R35 GTR was speed limited to 180kph, which is why the GTR has now been knocked off by the Ford GT Production car. Apparently it was stuck at 180 most of the way down the straight. I like the show. I prefer the original pommy Top Gear, but 2x shows = more Top Gear to watch!
  18. Hey Pete, Will be interested to see your pics after you've changed your kit... would you be able to post more photos when you've had it fitted?!
  19. 13 11 11 = RAA! I once had an old Mini, gave it a service, and pulled the dizzy apart, got stuck and couldnt start the thing afterwards. The bloke got it going again. Might as well get some service for my annual membership!
  20. I'd use Sikaflex (the black automotive stuff) to seal it back up. Bunnings +Supercheap sell it, its expensive but you'll only need 1 cartridge.
  21. If i had a GTR, i wouldnt get them, id stick with the racing/tuff look. But for my GTS-T, i'm considering getting this style from psiparts: Similar to this car:
  22. Friday Arvo: Spotted a white R33 boosting up and down side-streets on the outskirts of Port Adelaide and then up Old Port Road, driving it like its stolen!
  23. Or just take your old pads to a brake place/autoparts supplier and get them to identify correct part #?
  24. I think Autobarn do Vipers.
  25. x2. Temporarily disabling ABS should be as easy as pulling a fuse?
