Wheel Shaking And Tram Lining
sl33py replied to sl33py's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Matty, I'm not sure you really read this thread all the way though. I didn't approach my regular mechanic about this problem first. I took it to so-called 'specialists' because I assumed (incorrectly) that my mechanic only looked after the engine side of things. So he's not to blame. Each suspension place was taking pot-shots and replacing a few parts like you describe. It wasn't until I visited my usual mechanic, who took two goes, and replaced parts that needed it on both attempts, that the problem was found. And anyway, it wasn't tie-rods. I don't know where you got that from - the steering rack was slightly bent, not visible without pulling it all out. Even he said noone would have seen it unless they pulled the whole suspension apart, and the reason he did so was because I said 'fix it no matter what', when all the other places either replaced the simplest thing they could think of as the cause, or only replaced one small problem I had, leaving other major things unfixed (eg the front end of the bumpstops). Of course I would have liked if someone saw the bent rack to start with, but I'm not complaining like people on ACA. Just telling people on here my story so they can know what else to look for with wheel shakes, cos EVERYONE just kept telling me it was my wheel alignment, when 3 or 4 places had already aligned it. Cheers. -
Why? Rear Edge Of R32 Bonnet Looks "raised"
sl33py replied to sl33py's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I see. God it looks annoying to me hahaha. I KNEW it had to be done for a purpose, not just looks. You'd think that Dubai dude would just buy a vented bonnet then, he didn't even have an air filter or anything anyway (... or a seat belt, crazy buggers). Thanks guys. -
I'm not sure if this is more cosmetic related or engine related, you'd have to read the Q to see why: I often see R32's with a bonnet and the trailing (rear) edge of the bonnet looks like it actually not sitting flush with the guards, but sitting slightly higher up. An example is the R32 from Dubai in the Skyline only edition of HPI. My guess would be that the bonnet isn't even attached to hinges like normal, but only bolted down by those 'peg' things (proper name?) on the leading edge, and simply left sitting without being secured on the windscreen end. But I don't think that's right cos it sounds dumb. So Wtf is this? How is it attached? I would hazard a guess it's done simply to accommodate something to do with the ENGINE, rather than a COSMETIC change done just for the looks... ? If not, someone explain and just move this thread Thanks in advance.

I posted this in your other thread, but check this out. Will give you some ideas. Hopefully you solve the problem quicker and cheaper than the mess I had to go through (which ended up being 'if in doubt, throw it out'). SydneyKid was very helpful in helping me. Yooooou, Shook Me aaaalll niiiight loooong.

Wheel Shaking And Tram Lining
sl33py replied to sl33py's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
By rack, I mean the front steering rack had a slight bend in it (one of the arms I'm guessing?). It was straightened and also reconditioned and now everything is great. -

Suction Camera Mounts Still Ok At Wakey? Found Out: No
sl33py replied to sl33py's topic in Australian Capital Territory
Err Keith, the fact that the whole group I know who went last week were forced by Wakefield staff to go up and stand/sit near the first corner instead of standing on pitwall, even though they were all paid up and registered drivers on the day, would suggest otherwise. And that was a speed off the streets day, not a track day. AND I rang and asked Adam Ronke to ask and confirm, because I didn't want to go if I couldn't even see what was happening. So no lies here. -

Paul, My mechanic says there's a difference between PFC's made for the R333 GTST S1 and the S2! One designed for internal ignitors, the other for external (can't remember which he said is which). He's going to find out for me today. The PFC I have came off a S1 and mine is an S2.... -

If you need to ask that, don't install the FMIC yourself.

Skyline Suitable For 1st Car?
sl33py replied to ctchme's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Non-turbo may present less mechanical problems for the same age car as the turbo version. However, in the grand scheme of things, I don't believe a 10yo+ Skyline is a reliable car. If you are a student and/or working and need to be on time to places, I wouldnt get it. I figured it out, and my turbo R33 costs me about 40 bucks a day to drive (inc fuel/loan/insurance/rego, but NOT including repairs, which have totalled more than the purchase price of the car so far). If you need a mode of transport for A to B, buy something else. If you have that 7k, plus another 7k (no matter what you think now, or what ppl on here say, you'll inevitably want to upgrade the wheels, tyres, stereo etc), then add fuel on top (it's not representative in that 2.5L uses 20% more than a 2L engine, you'll use a lot more), plus attention from police (compounded by being a young drive, it's not so bad if you're older). On the other hand, if you're a complete car nut, and you want a toy, and can afford to lose that money mentioned above for a bit of fun, go for it. PS, I may be a little jaded lol At least the interest rates should decrease soon. Personally, I wouldn't get an NA, buy a cheap run about for now and save up for a GTST or GTR later on (depending on ur level patience). Also, insurance may be more affordable. On the OTHER other hand, if you've got rich relatives who'll give you whatever you want, buy whatever you like. -
Another vote for Optima yellow top here. Never had a problem with my audio system (though it's by no means 'killer'). Recently the turbo died and the car was was sitting in my backyard for about 2.5 months without being touched. The battery had run flat enough that it wouldn't crank over, but after 1.5 days charge it started no worries. Ppl tell me it should continue to work fine from now on, hope so - impressed so far.

Make sure you keep the original shroud, it serves a purpose.
