  3. The engine awards aren't just about outright power. Stuff like smoothness, power delivery, response, economy, and even the note come into it. Don't forget that the Euros tend to tune their cars conservatively. Most of the aftermarket guys can pull an extra 20% more power out of the Euro turbo engines with ECU tweaks alone (like most of the VAG turbomotors), and that's before you touch any hardware like the exhaust or intercooler etc. There was an interview with Peter Luxon of APS in a Motor magazine ages ago, and they said they pulled another 30kW+ at the tyres out of a 996 Turbo with only a ECU retune. The OEM setup runs the car rich in the top end, to preserve the engine while its being held at high RPM on the autobahn, but since that doesn't happen in Australia you can "safely" lean it out and make more power. And my mate just bought a new Polo GTi. 110kW off the showroom floor, but with an ECU reflash and a stronger BOV it'll make 150kW.
  4. There are quite a few FI options available for the platform now. HKS has a single turbo kit available, which by all accounts is a schmick setup (I'm trying to score a drive of one at the moment). 230rwkW at 4psi through a GT3037 with a suitable exhaust, so if you upgrade the injectors and pump there's still plenty of headroom. While it might cost more than a CAPA supercharger kit, it'll be the same price as any imported S/C kit and far cheaper than twins. The FMIC only goes across about half the grille of a 350Z as well, which means along with the low boost and power levels you shouldn't get into major heat issues.
  5. Have you ever owned a set? There's a reason why RAYS have to provide you with a torque load for their lock nuts, and tell you that you can only ever hand tighten them. Its because they're soft, a lot softer than your regular stainless steel ones. I forgot about that once, and when I took my car to a tyre shop they practically destroyed mine. Since I also change my wheels frequently (I have street and track rims) it means I'm constantly on them, which also reduces their life. But they are amazingly light. If you're trying to shave off every hundredth at the track, that little big of unsprung weight might make a difference but on the street its all rice. And in some cases, like the Volk GT-Cs, you have to use a specific set of nuts to make them fit.
  6. We were wondering if that was you. Looked like your car, but the rims were black and it didn't sound as loud as normal when you left. If you'd gone on that cruise you may not have been involved - this accident was with a different cruise to the one you saw.
  7. If it had 4 doors, then its not a Silvia. People do stupid nose and tail conversions all the time, its possible someone wanted to make their ugly sedan look like the second ugliest modern Silvia (after the S12 "Gazelle") ever made.
  8. Its not variable geometry. Look at the pics - they've got wastegates. VGT turbos don't have wastegates - the boost control is done with the vanes inside.

  10. If you can afford an RB25DET I'd suggest it. You can set the car's suspension up, to a certain extent, around the extra nose heaviness from the bigger engine and if its drift-only then making major changes to the front end to fit all your coolers isn't an issue. The SR20 will make more midrange torque than an RB20 (while probably having just as much top-end) but there's no replacement for displacement.
  11. The RB20 would be perfect if you wanted to push your centre of gravity forward, encounter packaging issues fitting bigger heat exchangers, as well as increasing the car's total weight, while having less midrange torque.
  12. As far as I'm aware, AFCs are a universal part. They're not car specific. Technically they're illegal, since they change your car's emissions. And they're little like a PowerFC. An AFC only lets you adjust your A/F ratio - it does a fraction of what a PowerFC can do.
  13. It needs Watanabes, or wire wheels. And yeah, those wheel arches (and wheels) need to be a lot bigger for the vehicle to be in the right proportion.

  16. As per the doco, the number it gives you (especially in the higher gears) will never read the same as a dyno. There's no wind resistance to influence the numbers on a dyno. In the lower gears, where you're not going as fast, its meant to be quite accurate if you get the weight and calibration right.

If you ever got anything right your insults might actually hurt me, but since its quite obvious to everyone that you probably couldn't even tie your shoelaces on the first attempt it doesn't really bother me.   18. Dimensions Diameter: 18" Width: 8" Offset: +30 PCD: 5x114.3 Is that going to be a bit too wide on the front? If so, the 17" 350Z rims don't look too bad and at 17x75 +30 they might fit. They definitely fit on the front of S14 Silvias.
  19. That Nismo FairladyZ was getting held up by the Cayman S as well, but I doubt he would have out-accelerated the BMW Z4M Coupe regardless. I've gone for a squirt in the straights up against a mate in his E46 M3 convertible, and I got smashed. I'd love to get the chance to drive one of those Z4M's in anger, and see how the chassis feels in comparison. Even if the handling is only as good as the Z33's, that engine alone would make me want to trade up. I don't know if the 380RS-C engine (which has 300kW) is street legal, and thus a proper comparison with the Z4M. I am rather surprised that the "tuned" S2000 was that slow, though.
  20. I can't think of any inline-4 car engine I've liked the sound of. Silvia nuts love the sound of the SR, and those Toyota boys seem to ruin their pants over a wailing 4AGE, and don't even get me started on Honda fanboys, but for me its all noise and no note.
  21. Actually, the premise of VTEC was to provide a flexible powerband. Small camshafts are good for producing torque down low, big camshafts are good for flowing lots of air in the top end. In a VTEC engine, the camshaft has one of each lobe, and it chooses the one to use depending on the rev range. Logical, and elegant. Too bad they failed in their goal until they brought in i-VTEC, and added variable camshaft timing to go with the variable cam lobes. If peak power at high RPM was their only goal, just running a traditional camshaft with only the big lobe would have sufficed. It would have given them the same numbers, but without all the complexity. The car would have been, however, completely unstreetable. If your average VTEC car ran that badly in the low-end with a smaller cam profile optimised for that part of the rev band, imagine how bad it runs down there on the big cam.....?

You don't ever want anyone to think you've got at least two working braincells, do you? Did Holden name the current VE because its Visually Excellent? The RB30 powered Commodore of yore must be Very Loud, right? Since there's no actual meaning for the internal designation, how can anyone find you a source on a meaning that doesn't exist? Its the hallmark of an insecure person to go around looking for meaning where none exists. I didn't know you were 10 foot tall...? I'd guess you shoot hoops then, since you sound like someone who plays with balls all day.

  24. The WRX will be faster than the 2WD cars point to point, especially if you modify it. Some decent handling mods on a WRX (like the anti-lift kit) give them the handling to go with the grip. And there's plenty of knowledge of the engine out there, for squeezing power out of. Between the S15 and R34 GTT, the Silvia is the lighter and more nimble of the two vehicles. The Skyline is the more stable. So it depends on how twisty the roads are. Narrow and tight, go the Silvia. On more sweeping roads, take the Skyline. Mods-wise, both the RB25 and SR20 respond well to mods and the cars are so popular that there are plenty of handling mods out there. The difference between the JDM and AuDM S15s have been covered ad nauseum and the list isn't short; a quick search in Google or a Silvia forum will give you the answers you want. The Skyline is more of a grand tourer than the Silvia, so it will be a nicer car to sit in. It'll be more comfortable, better isolated, and feel more planted on the road. As a daily driven street car its a better option, but if every day is race day I'd probably buy a Silvia.
