notchy gearbox at startup ??
silver33 replied to Gizmo73's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I have been told that the Redline Shockproof stuff is good initially but could prematurely ruin a perfectly good gearbox. It's made for racing conditions. Cars used in racing conditions usually get their gearbox's rebuilt after a race. Thus using it in a daily driven vehicle may prematurely destroy the gearbox. Don't know how true this is, but it's something to be weary of. -
I have done exactly what you have described. I didn't want the added noise of a cat back system, so i only upgraded the dump and front pipe. I did not expect to get a significant power increase but was hoping for better response as the stock dump is extremely restrictive. As expected, power does not appear to have increased significantly, but I am getting better response, especially from a standing start. In general, i'm quite happy with the upgrade. But if you are looking for a real power increase and don't mind the added noise from a free flowing system, upgrade the cat-back system first.

Thanks guys for all your input. I don't plan to do much more to my car. At the most, maybe replace the stock cat back exhaust system. Based on this, i don't think I will ever need to go to a PowerFC. The only reason why I'm considering the S-AFC is because a friend of mine is going to Japan. He has already done some shopping around and could potentially pick up a 2nd-hand S-AFC II for less than AUS$150. I figure, if I don't gain much from it, I could just re-sell it.

I have a 1996 R33 Skyline GTS-T Series 2 with very mild mods - TurboXS High Performance Boost controller set to 10psi and a 3" dump leading into a stock cat-back exhaust system. I've read various threads indicating that an Apexi S-AFC makes a good improvement even on a stock vehicle. But upon speaking with some performance shops in Sydney, they've indicated that I may not gain anything. Can I please get some comments from fellow members who are using an Apexi S-AFC and the mods on their vehicles. I was looking at getting an S-AFC II but now I'm thinking twice.

I'm looking for a silver R33 Series 2 front lip/chin spoiler, like the one pictured in the following link: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...&threadid=26805

OVL-747, Is M R C Dyno and Performance in Sydney? If so, which suburb? -
Hey Ned, If you do decide to get 3" piping leading into the stock muffler, let us know of any improvements or degradation. It would be very interesting to hear your comments.

Unigroup and ProCar sounds good at the moment. FireBladeJr - let us know how you go with ProCar. -
Hey Ned, I understand your dilema. I too have a 3" dump off the turbo upto the cat but have a stock exhaust from the cat back. I use to have an exhaust from Hi-Tech on my previous car and the exhaust note at cruising speed also got to me., which is why I have not upgraded the cat back exhaust. I like the quietness of the stock system but I'm sure there is alot of ponies to be had by replacing it with a more free flowing system. If I was to upgrade, a Jap cat back system that is JASMA approved would be the only systems I would consider. One of my friends brothers has an R33 GTS-T with a Jap system. I've only been in it once and it was very quiet - could not believe it. I'll see if I can get the brand and model.
-
Hey Ned, Why not try a second hand Japanese cat-back system? You can get them for as little as $450. Depending on the brand and model, some are quieter than the Hi-Tech exhausts.

Firebladejr, I'm very interested to read your comments on how you go with getting your S-AFC tuned. I'll be getting an S-AFC II in about a month. I'll be looking for someone to fit and tune the thing for me. I've dealt with Rick Shaw in the past. The service was good and the prices were very reasonable. I'm just not sure how much they know about Apexi products or tuning them correctly. I have also dealt with BD4's as well. The service was so-so but they were abit pricier than Rick Shaw. Again...how well do they know Apexi products? I know they use alot of HKS products though. -
As with Jay95R33, I am also using the TurboXS HPBC. Works very well. Set to 10psi with piping as short as possible (mounted the boost controller where the original solenoid was) - no spiking. The anti-wastegate creep design works very well.

Good question Shane. I would also like to know the answer to this.

I recently had a 3" dump fitted and the original heat shield over the turbo and dump was removed. Should I get some exhaust wrap on the dump? How effective is exhaust wrap in reducing under bonnet temps? www.flyn.com.au is selling 6m of fibreglass exhaust wrap for $48. Anybody using this stuff? Is this stuff any good?
