Obviously I can't speak on behalf of the mods but unfortunately not everyone owns a digital camera or a scanner, but I agree that instead of emailing it to people, they should post it the thread once. -
Erm, what kind of yen are we talking here?

If/when I get over there, I'd prefer to get a car... because I prefer the freedom of having one... and I love to travel via driving. If it was just a car to get around in for the period that I"m there, I'd get a 180 or a Silvia or something cheap and fun that I could play with, but not lose a huge amount of cash on. If I sold my current car, and had $20k to play with over there... then it'd be a different story... I'd get one to keep and bring back with me. The only downside I could see would be at the end of my year-contract with work there, and the amount of time until I could export the car back to oz... I'd have to save up and stay *somewhere* for the two weeks/month, etc. Or I could stay another year.

And I've beaten WRX's in my lightly modded Skyline, but I can't really quote that as evidence... if you could prove your statement, that'd be great though. Edit: I actually just remembered that I'm sitting 10m away from a stock MY99 Rex owner. Unfortunately, no 4WD dynos here in Rocky.
-
HKS: they certainly are, utterly nothing wrong with them... as a mate just stated, a GTR is for the track, and STi is for the rally... BBQ: Figures are just figures and real world is real world, but until we've got some real world evidence between the two, all we can really do is put the stock figures up against each other.
-
Well, until you show concrete evidence stating what you just did, your post sounds like nothing more than 'Lies, all lies!'. Considering the torque of the WRX is only 6nm more than the GTS, it would be hard to imagine the rex having a much larger midrange, because the GTS doesn't suddenly get this massive burst of power and torque... the stocker is very linear. For the record, I'm completely objective about this. I have a Skyline. My friends have WRX's. I like cars

How much would they set you back for say a Skyline sized car, Akeenan? The rego and parking spot, not the insurance.

Well, er, since I'm avoiding work, R33 GTR vs STi. MY2004 STi again, from subaru.com.au Max. output (DIN) kW/rpm 195/6000 Max. torque (DIN) Nm/rpm 343/4000 Unladen mass kg 1470 P/W ratio: 7.5 (equal to the stock GTS25t... interesting...) '95 R33 GTR from http://imports.motortraders.net.au/imports...spec.asp?id=617, again, feel free to find me offical specs. Max power 206kW @ 6800rpm (real world, it's anyone's guess, but I've read on this page http://www.jbskyline.net/R33/GTR/Specs/ that it's 302hp, which by convert.exe is 225kw.) Max torque 368Nm @ 4400rpm Weight 1530kg P/W ratio: 7.4 (possible 'real' figure: 6.8) The AWD of the rex no longer becomes a big advantage, thanks to Atessa in the GTR, and the figures state that the 'R should be faster. Although, GTR-Sti, who has owned both, stated his STi feels quicker. Is it actually faster or is it one of those perceived things from being in a different car? The stock figures would say it's not actually faster, but until we get a stock skyline and a stock wrx/sti, we'll never know for certain. GTR-STi, even though you've left the thread, want to dyno and weigh both cars for us?
-
No one's really talked about power/weight ratios of the stock vehicles yet (that I've seen), so... MY04 WRX (taken from subaru.com.au) Max. output (DIN) kW/rpm 168/6000 Max. torque (DIN) Nm/rpm 300/3600 Unladen mass kg 1395 P/W ratio: 8.3 R33 GTS25t(taken from Meggala's page: http://www.meggala.com/r33main1.html - There seems to be some confusion over exact stock figures, 187kw, 180, same with weight... but Meggala's figures seem to be fairly average from what I've read, so I'm happy to use them. Anyone got any offical Nissan specs?) Max power 184kW @ 6400rpm Max torque 294Nm @ 4800rpm Weight 1390kg P/W ratio: 7.5 So... going by pure numbers, and all things being equal, the Skyline should be faster. However... ... there are a lot of variables: driver weight, extra crap in the car, amount of fuel in the tank, tire wear, slipping clutches on the WRX or slipping rear wheels on the Skyline, driver error on launch or gear change, aerodynamics, the list goes on. Bang for buck definitely goes to the skyline though... unless both of them are 2004 models.

That'd be one problem of moving to japan for a year, and hoping to get a car over under the 12 months thing... you'd have to buy something as soon as you step off the plane.
-
Actually, that's pretty spot on, the fries were the same colour as domo kun... yet greasier.
-
heheh, I asked her if she could speak english... and then I think I mumbled something like 'ni-juu burger o kudasai'... I'm not sure why I wanted 20 burgers... but I remember that the fries were dark brown/burnt.

Yukio, I'm personally considering NOVA because they're A: everywhere. and B: they seem to have an entire package and very variable shift hours, so for working tourists like myself, they would seem to be a rather good option. They're also used to taking care of westerners so they'd know the answers to the common questions. There are a couple of other english schools I'm looking at... but I won't be finished my degree until june next year... and that's if work gives me a redundancy so I can finish it internally. Long story. On a small japanese side note, I had a dream last night that I was in some japanese mall, and some burger bar had a special, 20Y for a small burger and fries... I was even speaking in japanese to the girl at the counter... :looney: My brain is weird. :headspin:

Where can I find insurance for my import?
Sciby replied to PranK's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
SliM, probably the best idea, at your age, is to get your dad to get the car insured under his name. For myself, I'm 29, rating 2, and I'm paying $770, but I also live in regional queensland. I'm not going to say anything about an 18 year old driving a Skyline (and turbo at that), but for the love of god, please be careful in it, and read this site: http://www.shemboy.com -
Umm... for the second time, I said that I wasn't confusing grip and handling. Perhaps you should read my posts again. For the record, the tyres on the car I was in were 50% tread, it took corners happily, nothing earthshattering, but the ride and associated handling are very good. Handling does not always mean cornering ability.
-
No, read my comment that Ferni was referring to. I was talking about the feel of the car, the suspension setup, not about how well it grips.
-
Er, no, I don't have them mixed up, don't need grip in a straight line. He's had a thicker front sway bar and whiteline springs installed. Regardless of that, the chassis does play a part.

At the moment, NOVA seems like a good option for working there... they have their own apartments, so you don't have to pay the godawful upfront fees, and you'd be living with other non-nationals, so they'd be able to give you the n00b tour. Also, since NOVA isn't a school per se, they wouldn't be tied to any school calendar, ie, if they give you paid holidays (I think you get 10-20py?), you'd be able to take them whenever you want. YMMV though.

I'd disagree on the 4wd being the launching gift that some people think it is, Maxx. Yes, it definitely works better, but as GTRSTI said earlier, the stock clutch will just let go to protect everything... if they've upgraded the clutch, then it'd be a different story, but then again, every rex I've had a blat against, I've gotten the jump on them.
-
predator: Yeah, some people do it in expensive strange ways. If I decide to do the 3L thing again (just been looking at http://www.shemboy.com - it stills the hoon inside for a while)... I think I'll get a 3L block all set and prepped, then spend two weeks taking the head off, transferring all subsystem stuff to the 3L and getting the head ready... the only thing I'd be worried about sorting out myself is the path for the larger timing belt.
-
SK, you've changed your pictures! Oh well, at least Stageas are somewhat pretty. The reason for the interest in the 25det head is that there's simply just more of them, theorhetically driving the cost down... or prepping and setting up the block and just swapping the head (albeit, with any changes needed). Imho, I don't think there'd be a world of difference between the 25de and the det heads? Sydneykid, the external line that you've outlined, that solves the different gallery mouth shapes? Would you do anything to allow for that? apart from cutting away at the gasket to fit both, I can't see a huge problem, but the reason I asked the forum is because I'm not a mechanic. I may have $3k very shortly, to throw at the car, so I'm exploring the RB30 path again...
-
My god this thread is huge now. Well, I'm back on the road again and starting to regret selling the 30det I picked up... and this thread is too huge to do an indepth search right now, so a quick question... is the modification of the oil gallery for a 25det head to mate up with a 30 block that difficult? It may be somewhat hard to find decent 25de heads and there seem to be more variety in go-fast bits for the det head.

Interesting thread (apart from 15 year olds with the 'my mate's bro's cousin's car' stories... My R33 is mildly modded - 12psi, exhaust, 34 GTT intercooler, better clutch, filter - and the several rex's I've played against on the street, I've beaten. For some reason (driver, probably) I've gotten the jump off the line on the rex(s) then turbo winds up fully and I'll pull away. The majority of them seemed to be stockers (at least from the exhaust), and one had an exhaust and I don't know what else. Frankly, I'd love to own a rex. A co-worker has an MY99 and I utterly love the feel and handling. I've spent a bit of time recently trying to mimic its suspension, and I think it's pretty close now. Tight, but not punishing, communicates bumps and the feel of the road without rattling teeth out. However, my money only covers the R33, so... Anyway, that co-worker and I have had a good drag on a very long stretch of highway (and several other wrx's and I have played there. ) so it's fairly close in enviroment to a strip: nice and straight and flat, goes for about two kms, set of lights that changes automatically, don't have to wait for cars to set it off, no places for cops to hide (unless they can levitate. ). The coworker I got the jump on, but thanks to a badly destroyed clutch on my behalf, he caught up to me and passed at about 90. I'd love to have another go against him now, and so would he, but we never seem to meet up there... and the damn sod won't let me have a drive of it anyway. GTR-STI, can I borrow yours? I'm quite sure if I came up against a mid-heavy modded wrx, it'd be a different and interesting story. I'm quite sure I wouldn't get the jump as easily and I couldn't even guess who'd pull ahead. Won't stop me from having a go though. Anyone got a stock R33 and a stock WRX?
-
Should be interesting... good gains for rb20... and now maybe for RB25's... it'll be hard to get a set of GTR cams.
