Call me weird, but if someone was willing to find a cheap set of rb26 cams and cam gear, i'd risk it. Oh, and a good tuner.

Well, the thread seems to have stalled, so I think I'll just reopen it. > I currently work for a uni in Oz, I'm a sysadmin (IT work, for those who don't know), and I'm about to take a redundancy... it'll pay off the skyline, leave me debt free and leave me with about $40k in the hand. Going to finish my last 4 subjects for my IT degree internally, and then going to try to get a position in japan, june 2005. Should be right for their autumn start. I have a few questions for everyone: - It seems that we can at least expect around 250,000y per month in wages. How far does that realistically stretch, assuming living in a box apartment and average travel times to work. - What is the situation with paid leave? is it a government stipulated situation, or is it per-school basis? Are they resonable with your leave, or is it basically 'when the kids are on holidays'? For that matter, what's the school year like? Do they even get holidays? I'm curious because while the teaching is a great experience and it pays the bills, I would be there to experience the country, the culture and the cars. - I've seen several places saying that you must be willing to work in Japan for at least a year. Is this likely to be a binding contract, or just a 'very good idea' to stay there for a year, etc? I'm not wanting to move back straight away, but if it goes sour, I don't want to be stuck, especially if it turns out my umbrella company is dodgy. - I would assume that if your japanese sucks, it can be very lonely. Are the japanese easy to make friends with? Do japanese co-workers invite you to social events, or is this one of those 'case by case' things? - Could someone give a brief rundown of buying a car in japan while living there. What on-road costs can you expect, etc? Surely it's not as easy as paying the free-on-board costs (or comparative) and just driving off?

New bilstein/Kings setup: review
Sciby replied to SLY33's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
The Bilsteins are now in, married to the Sports Ryders... which are still a problem. While the Bilsteins have definitely told the springs to behave, it's still on the bouncy side of perfect... but only just. The problem is that the roads I have to live with are... well... shiiiiite. No two ways about it... the Bilsteins are good, and if I move to a better-roaded area, they're just waiting for a new sit of harder springs. $1200 fitted, but worth it, I suspect. Anyone know where and how much for a set of King Springs lows? -
I was about to get a VX SS when the bank said no, and offered me $25k instead of $45k. I think I'm much happier with the Skyline than I would be with an SS.

help - instald dump pipe, now engine warning light!?
Sciby replied to Driver's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
You'll definitely notice a difference... I went from a cat back to a full system, first thing I noticed after a hard fang was that the cat heat warning light pops on. You'll also feel a bit more urge in the top end. -
Whoops! Typo on my behalf, was at work when I did that post. I'm very sure only monkeys would think that non-interference meant that valves and pistons interferred with each other. I can't imagine why nissan would make an engine like the RB series, put them in cars that they mean to have the poop raced out of them, and make 'interference' engines... imagine the abuse from race teams with snapped belts...
-
A mild side subject... does anyone know if any of the RB family are interference/non-interference engines? (non-interference: if the belt snaps, pistons and valves will collide.) Do we have a definitive source for yes or no on this? Would give us all peace of mind/panic and paranoia about our timing belts... but either way, we need to know for sure.

Questions - My dyno results ok? How to improve?
Sciby replied to Bill's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Well, that suits me quite well... the current target is 200rwkw as cheaply (but as safely) as possible. I've cut corners by using a 34GTT intercooler, so if an SAFC can smooth out things up to 200rwkw, fine by me. Thanks SK, excellent advice as always. Edit: Additional stupid question... anyone know a good place in Sydney to get an SAFC fitted and tuned? I'm off on a driving holiday soon, and I've got some free time there... -
Questions - My dyno results ok? How to improve?
Sciby replied to Bill's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
A very stupid question, because I'm 99% sure the answer is 'no', but an S-AFC won't help will it? Or will it help smooth things out even though the stocker ECU will still be enabling the boost cut? -
Why you wouldn't get a skyline!
Sciby replied to someonestolecc's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
That's generally the best option for under-25's looking for comp insurance... although I don't know if you still have to live with your parents or not? -

Sciby replied to someonestolecc's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
someonestolecc, it's generally not because you've got an import, it's more to do with age and location and type of car. If a company actually insures an import, they're not that much more expensive... however they have statistics of age related accidents, etc, along with demographics of car models most likely to be stolen and areas of high theft. I've lost my licence in the last year and I own a turbo import, but I'm also over 25 (which is the big one) and I live in a regional area (Central Qld), so I pay $770 a year, $1600 excess. I'm amazed I got such a good premium, especially after losing the licence... but it generally comes down to age and location. Good luck with the search. Give Suncorp a go, I believe they'll cover people in NSW. -
Evo 7 compliance now available!!!!
Sciby replied to Serious-Seven's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Well, what do you expect from someone with a Tupac quote in their sig? *baits, casts and waits * -
Interesting idea... should have a fair whack of torque down low, but of course, it wouldn't keep up with a turbo. Still... an RB30 na in a light R32 would be definitely fun.

Learner driver in skyline doing 205km/h?!?!
Sciby replied to Amaru's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
I"m pretty sure they'd make allowances for that sort of emergency as well. Cops may be arseholes, but they're not inhuman. -
It would be doubtful if you could get much lighter flywheels than 5kg... maybe some exotic metal'd ones, but nothing that's going to cost you $375. Darrin, interested.

Evo 7 compliance now available!!!!
Sciby replied to Serious-Seven's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I thought there was a dirt section to Targa Tas? *shurgs* Oh well. Personally, I'd prefer to have the fulltime AWD of a Rex or an Evo in the dirt, rather than the on-demand of altessa... -

Sciby replied to Amaru's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Not at all, you're fully entitled to your opinion, don't feel that because you're young that you can't have your say, or that people won't listen. I'd say she's a big ol' bag of crazy to be acting like she is... and you're right, it's the minority that ruin it for the majority. Of course, that's how I think most fast/powerful cars are seen... they're a want, not a need. Does a 17 year old L/P plater need a fast car to begin their driving career and learning bad and good habits in? They don't *need* it, so wouldn't it be more sensible to get them to have a sensible car, until they've built up the skills to handle more challenging cars? Giving them a fast car up front is not the best idea. The sink or swim method doesn't work with swimming, so you can be damn sure it doesn't work with learning to be a good driver. I understand and remember what it was like at 17-20, wanting a great car and cruising with friends, but kids today (and I'm not talking about yourself here) seem to want things right *now*, they're truly products of the instant gratification generation. Sorry, have to disagree with you there. Having accidents is not the best way to get a young driver to behave and act like a responsible driver. It is the *fastest* way, but not the best way. It's like saying that young drivers *should* act like maniacs so they have that life-changing accident and get scared straight. Proper professional advanced driver training is the best way: learning how to deal with common problems (wet roads, aquaplanning, snap oversteer, etc) without hurting themselves or others in a controlled environment. I'm not sure it's such a bad idea to scare some people off having a licence. I don't see the problem, all I see is that impatient people would want to charge forward. Sometimes things in life have to be worked towards, you can't expect the priviledge of driving on public roads to just be handed over that easily. It's far too easy now to get a licence. Well, no one's trying to stop it, you can never stop it. However, we *can* reduce it. We can reduce the number of idiots who get a Skyline, act like farkheads and ruin it for the rest of us who want to enjoy our pride and joys. We can reduce the number of idiots who get a V8 when they're 18 and then lose it around a corner, slamming into a family car, because they didn't know how to deal with oversteer when they planted their foot. It won't stop idiot 17 year old girls on their L's with more money than brains. Sorry, going to disagree with you there. It's not up to the individual because there are other people on the road that they can possibly endanger. Rules and laws and restrictions aren't there to stop people having fun or to make them seem lame to the opposite sex, or to grab money hand over fist from cameras (although it certain feels like it)... They're there to save lives. Pure and simple. If someone is going to act like an idiot because they have poor impulse control or feel that they have the 'right' to drive how they wish, then someone has to step in to stop them from potentially harming others. Also, a hoon may do stupid stuff in a V8 or a 1.3L excel, but he's not able to accelerate as hard and reach high speeds as quickly in the excel. He can still cause some damage, but nowhere near as much as a V8 that's be turned into a barely-guided missle. I found some statistics on thursday night (I've tried to attach the file, but it's 500kb, will try to find hosting) that had the road fatality figures for 2002 (couldn't find any for 2003), and the number of fatalities for males, aged 17-25 was 335, and males aged 26-39, it was 358... pretty close, and leaning in favor of the young guns. (Those figures from page 12) However, the total number of 17-25 year old males in the country was 1,239,600, compared to 2,030,300. (from page 14, table 13) To summarise, in 2002, per 100,000 drivers 27.024 x 17-25yo males were in a fatal car accident, as opposed to 17.632 x 26-38 year old males. 9.3 extra deaths. The young guys have another 53% over the 26-29 year olds, which is why younger people aren't trusted as readily, and are slapped with incredibly high premiums. It's nothing personal towards young drivers (we were all young drivers) it's just cold hard facts. Sure, it could be argued that those young people died from other circumstances other than their inexperience or being silly or whatever, but those other circumstances would affect all age groups. However, we're heading in the right direction though... look at 1981... 467 fatalities for 26-39 year olds... 1001 for 17-25 year olds. -

Have they made any noises about an S16? From all reports the Silvia has been retired forever? but yeah, you're right, they're definitely jumping feet first into the high-revving, high-tech NA field... which I kinda like (Exhibit A: S2000), but I guess there's the history that we'd like to keep going... -
where to mont SAFC2 in a R33?
Sciby replied to nizmokid's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
An idea I had was to mount it in the sun shade, but they're slightly too thick, too heavy to be supported perfectly and when it's up, buttons might get pressed... and then you've got to cut up your sunshade and run cabling, blah blah blah. Might still put my S-AFC up there, but I"m pretty lazy. Feel free to give the idea a go though. -

I know you didn't say stock... but let's face it, evo's could break sound barriers at 100 feet above the ground with a racing team, the only thing that most punters will care about is how fast an Evo is at a price point they can afford. A friend of mine is a V8 man, and that's fine, but he constantly goes 'Nah nah, ABC V8 is faster than your Skyline.', to which you have to reply to him with "Yes, but your v8 barely beats Excels, so someone else's car is completely irrelevant." -
The reason that they'd pick on bonnet pins and not on 4X4's with huge bullbars is because the pedestrian won't get caught on the bullbar or whatever, they just go straight underneath.

I love the look over the E7's over the E8's... definitely... very angular and almost clinical, but, don't have $45k... and would probably buy an R33 GTR or a *good* R34 GTT. Evo_lee: but we're talking about street here, not heavily modified cars. Let's face it, the Evo's are relatively stuffed full electro-jiggery, compared to the GTR's. Yes, GTR's have super-hicas and altezza but considering that HICAS is generally thrown out for circuit work and altezza is on-demand 4wd compared to the Evo's full time AWD and the 'super' active yaw control, smart abs, etc, etc, it's easy to see why racing teams can really make them shuffle it around a circuit. But... on the street, with $45k in your pocket... is the Evo actually faster than a GTR? I"m having a hard time believing it, at least in a straight line. .6L worth of capacity, an extra turbo, it's almost overwhelming in simple terms of 'I have more'. (But, as always, more than happy for people to proof me wrong. ) If I had $45k, it'd be an R33 GTR with suspension, two bigger turbos, fuel bits and maybe a better headunit. Or an R33 GTR and a trip to japan to see the country it was born in. -
Learner driver in skyline doing 205km/h?!?!
Sciby replied to Amaru's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
No, it's totally relevant, p1r4t8r. The difference is that your dad and more mature younger people will resist the temptation to have a bit of fun and be stereotypically irrisponsible, yet the idiots in the rice cars drive like tools because of who they are, not what they drive... with that in mind, imagine if they did the same time in a skyline or a supra? On a side note, it's amazing what tools will do when they see a Skyline/whatever. It's like their balls drop and they're a pack of dogs sniffing around a bitch on heat. -
New bilstein/Kings setup: review
Sciby replied to SLY33's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Well, in an effort to stop the ScibyLine from acting like a boat on the straights, I've ordered a set of Bilstein shocks to replace the Pedders Comfort Gas/KYB X-Cels that I've got at the moment... I've got sports ryder springs, which I have no idea what the rates would be, but hopefully it'll be fine. Anyone have any specs for Pedders springs? Pedders themselves are useless.
