Count me in for twice.
1st time was very much the same situation as Docile. I took it to court - wasted lots of time and basically was told by the Judge "these little cars are pretty zippy these days" and had 6 points taken off me for doing 10 over the limit. Byegones.
2nd time was a silly me on my motorbike. A run of bad luck with small fines and one decent one on the bike and it was game over. This time it was fair. Lesson learnt.
If you really want to string out the time before you hand in the license, just don't pay the fine. You'll get a blue "reminder" notice with $10 added. Wait longer and you'll get a friendly court notice to pay, adding about $30. Timewise this process takes about 3-4 months and you get 1 month to pay the court notice - so there's an extra 5 months possibly which could come in handy depending on your situation.
