RB26 Tomei Type R Cams - Results?
No Crust Racing replied to No Crust Racing's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Admittedly from a guy who sells Cams, but interesting response. ************ He recommended their 260 cam - http://www.camtechcams.com.au/niss_6cyl_rb26.html "Hi Dan, The cams to use is our 413a. see cam specs below." ********* Which I thought was too big based on what we've discussed here and asked him what he thought. ********* " Hi Malcolm, I've been told that's too much duration and will cost me response, potentially down low and mid range torque also due to overlap dropping dynamic compression. Thoughts? ********* He doesn't agree.... ********* "Hi Dan, I think unfortunately the people that are giving you advise may be a little inexperienced. The cam I suggested is the next size bigger than standard. If you put anything smaller than want I have recommended you are wasting your time." ********* Which is odd given I asked him specifically about the 250 degree Type R.- 125 replies

RB26 Tomei Type R Cams - Results?

I'm waiting on camtech to get back to me. Does anyone know what the max lift is you can go before requiring buckets? I was wondering if they could make me a 248 or 250 duration with a bit more lift, if possible. If no more lift can be achieved, then maybe just a 248 with the same lift. I'm inclined to wanna test cams, as I got a good result with the Sil, but I alos came to the realisation I've had the car for almost a year, spent over 20k on it and barely driven it. So Cams might get shelved for a while given the nicer weather is here and I should actually drive the thing and enjoy it. I still need to get the rims resprayed, and maybe get the calipers re-done, but again I should drive it for a bit.- 125 replies

Forgot to add, lots of people use apexi pods but I've got massive K&Ns if that matters.- 125 replies

Yes it had already been removed and I was running an apexi panel filter. Nothing else was changed, literally just bolted on pods. I have since changed to AFM deletes and KTS hard suction pipes but that was more for aesthetics.- 125 replies

The graph I posted earlier, was with pods. I dont have a specific airbox vs pods back to back graph, but I was there and fitted them myself then spun it up. 14rkw, on boost sooner, and held boost easier. Nothing else was changed between runs other than pods. We had tuned for a new plazaman and gained some power and response, but the pods was done separately.- 125 replies

No idea, but there's no type Rs being discussed, just the usual bullshit of people talking with conviction about shit they've never personally tested- 125 replies

Haha, so salty I love it. Surely you've gotta see my thought process about really wanting to dig into things after the pods vs airbox bullshit. How many people swore black and blue airbox wasn't a restriction. Yet oddly my dyno result seems to have just been ignored. I get the theory regarding too much duration causing excessive overlap and costing power down low, and we've seen that with bigger cams. What we don't know is how much duration, and at what cam gear settings, that becomes an issue. Nobody has shown me Type R cams vs stock on a graph yet. In essence, you're probably right, I may just need to buy them and dyno test like I did with the pods. I don't mind being wrong, I just like some actual real world data either way, not just theory and people jumping on a viewpoint despite having no personal experience with it, such as the airbox vs pod discussion.- 125 replies

It was 140 in parts for the Silvia, will be a bit more for the GTR so doing some research doesn't hurt- 125 replies

Here they are. This was a bigger intake cam, 240-248 with a tiny bit more lift, and cam gears being adjusted. As you can see, more response, more torque and more power everywhere. It starts to cross over right at the top of the rev range, bu I'm shifting by then anyway. In my head, this is what I expect from Type R cams dialled correctly, am I way off the mark here given that if I did type R I'd be doing exhaust cam as well? Did the Silvia work better because only the intake had greater duration so there was no/minimal overlap ruining the down low?- 125 replies

So yours is the red line? I'm not sure why the get ignored, I looked at type A also but the R seemed to be pegged for best response. I'll dig up the graphs we did from the silvia which showed cams effect on boost, torque and power. Did you go from stock to type A and gain response and midrange?- 125 replies

Like I said earlier. I increased duration and advance in the Silvia and got more of everything. Went from mild to a little less mild duration and lify. We're not talking going from stock 240 to 272. I wonder if camtech would make a version with 248 duration and max lift before it needs buckets?- 125 replies

I always appreciate the feedback and discussion but I ask for results becausw of things like the pods vs airbox debate. I saw first hand the factory box was a restriction well under 400kw despite everyone swearing black and blue it wouldn't be. Dyno proven, nothing else changed and pods made more power. Again I'll reiterate that I always appreciate and listen to the advice I receive So I always look for real world test results, not just theory.- 125 replies

The lift gain was on par with what were talking here between stock and type r. It wasn't that aggressive an advance if I recall, certainly not 6 degrees as was mentioned here earlier- 125 replies

I could live with the graph being pointer in the middle if the final position was not lower. I like the top end pull it has now. I just want it to come on sooner and harder because that's fun to drive. When I changed the intake cam on the Silvia from 240 to 248 and dialled in the gears, on the dyno, I ended up with better response, and more torque and power everywhere. Different motor though not sure how relevant that is.- 125 replies

Agreed, not in the way that stockers are. My 33 with standard R34 BB's on it and 18psi was a beast for traffic light grand prix. My 34 would reel it in and blast past one the speeds climbed though.- 125 replies
