Replace Current Car With...
No Crust Racing replied to No Crust Racing's topic in Motorsport Discussion & Builds
Yeah I follow that Dane but while it's heavier it also wears wider rubber and has bigger brakes so yes those items cost more but the performance shoudl be roughly equal when taking the weight into consideration. Powerwise though you should end up with a better power to weight on an unopened engine? So in my head I have it as the GT-R costs more but should go faster, lap times wise? No? -

OK let's do some rough comparisons. What's an S14 weigh? 1250? 1300? and a GT-R is 1500-1550? So an S14 at 1250 with 230rwkw (I choose this power because I'm under the impression that's about the safe limit of a stock engine?) works out to be about 5.4Kg per kW. A GT-R with about 300rwkw (again guessing safe stock limit?) comes out to be about 5.16Kg per kW To acheive this both would need turbo upgrades, computer, intake and exhaust upgrade. I'm not 100% sure if both require fuel upgrades to get these figures. You would spend more on the GT-R to make that power but you'd have a better power to weigth ratio at that point, so more money spent but better power/weight.. make sense I guess. If the engines are rebuilt all this goes out the windo of course but neither are overly cheap to rebuild when going forged internals etc. Both will need suspension which when looking at decent quality suspension doesn't seem to vary much given the car, if we said the GT-R shocks were more expensive by a little bit due to heavier car then that's not that surprising. An S14 with slotted rotors and good pads and fluid should pull up pretty well, I have the same setup on my car and it out brakes semi slicks easily so does it need more braking power than that? Likewise my GT-R had upgraded rotors, pads and fluid and it seemd to have enough brakes for sprintsl, maybe it's because my home track is Winton which is not overly fast and I'm only doing sprints 6-8laps at a time? I'd have thought the standard Brembo's were up to the task but I must be wrong based on the consensus that everyone has about needing huge brakes on a GT-R. Then there's tyres, I don't think this one is avoidable, the GT-R seems to need 265 semi's to keep it on the black stuff whereas the S chassis cars seem quite content on 235's, a noteable cost difference. If buying new, but how much of a cost difference if being able to source them second hand I wonder. For all of it's extra expense in the above, the GT-R ends up with a higher outlay and ongoing costs, I can't even guess how much more fuel it would use, but at the power point listed the performance should be better in a GT-R, on paper at least all things considered. In my head it looks like you spend more and you go faster but from what everyone else is saying, that's just not the case. So I've either ballsed up the figures, over estimated the power potential of the engines, underestimated cost differences, or am just plain biased? -

Nah haven't forgotten, just been a bit snowed under with the house, unexpected redundancy, now working in Melbourne temporarily, etc. Haven't had time to work on or drive the car, DECA could be a good chance to blow out some cobwebs and see what breaks I'll forward through a form today Ryan. EDIT: In filling out the form I just noticed my licenses are expired, I'll have to sort that first - Joy -

Late as usual... What are my chances of getting in Ryan/Bec? Is the list very up to date? Any people pulling out just yet? -

I might be talking crazy, but do people not rebuild their own engines with 26's, would keep the labour cost down and in the end it's just another 4 stroke engine. s there something special to know regarding tolerances or oil control etc? -

lol curse Nissan for making us fall in love with a car that's maybe 10% more capable but %30 more expensive in every way? lol -

Really? what's the legality of it Marlin, just out of curiosity. -

I can't see why it wouldn't be legal, but putting a tow pack on a GT-R seems criminal... It'd be an expensive tow car too fuel and service costs wise. To add to the GT-R expense.. I would need a the next rated tow pack up to tow the GT-R behind the Fairmont =\ I only have the standard 1600kg pack, would need the 2300kg pack for an GT-R. -

Hah, Pretty much because I can see good reason in both points of view. I've love the lightness and cheapness of the S13 and there is something to be said for going along to a track day and being just .2 of a second off an M5 that's only a couple of years old, we all know it's a super heavy GT style car but it's expensive and it's got power so I got a buzz from that. At the same time he got in that M5 and cruised home like he'd been out for a Sunday drive, gotta appreciate that. On the other hand, I loved my GT-R but part of that was that I'd bought it modified and didn't have it quite long enough to ever have any major dramas with it, that and it was only mild tune 250awkw so not heaps should go wrong at that power. Sure I had to put some AFM's on it, common issue, and the parts cost for service items weren't awesome (because I wanted to treat it right). But the fun I had on the track tangling with much lesser powered WRX's coupled with driving it to work from time to time just to hear it scream down the on ramp was hard to match, I don't get that same feeling from the Silvia but it's a "dirty track car". At the same time, pulling into the pits, I thought, how the hell does a 2000 model WRX with only 160-170awkw keep up with my car on the straights. I've got 2 more cylinders, an extra turbo and this car new cost literally 3 times as much as the WRX. The answer of course is weight. My car wasn't that much more expensive than his at the time so it wasn't too bad and I did over take him so I at least felt justified in my GT-R ownership. It really is a tough one and when the time comes it will likely depend on what's around, what frame of mind I'm in and how much money I have to play with. No doubt the S14 option is much cheaper in basically every way, but It's not the sort of car I see myself taking for a weekend cruise so it should be cheaper as it'll be performing one less function for me. Some people might not get that but with the exception of the S15, I don't see Silvia's as great streeters, they're a bit small and a bit coarse. That's a personal thing though as I've taken my antics off the street now so I don't want something quite so raw for sunday cruising. -

Ego went out the door a long time ago, it's more a case of the $$. Like most of us, I'm not rich and I do my own work to keep costs down so the appeal of an S-Chassis is obvious, hence starting with one. Damn money... -

Won't be keeping this, as I mentioned. I also want to be able to drive it on the weekends occasionally and no offense to S13 lovers, but this car isn't good for much else besides thrashing on the track. Later model S-Chassis maybe but they're just not for me as a street car. -

I think the point is more so that in an lighter car you wont need 350rwkw to turn the same lap time as a GT-R with that much power and you'll have spent less money. As much as I hate it, those are the cold hard facts. -

To be honest, an R33 GTS-T isn't really on the cards, I switched to my R33 GT-R because the GTS-T just didn't excite me enough, and it wasn't just a lack of power. That said, I also used to have the idea that RWD + tubo just meant constant dorfito but after owning the S13 and seeing first hand that even I can set it up for and drive it grip style that was a bt of a revelation. It'd be S14 or R33 GT-R, which comes down to cheaper track car that I'm unlikely to want to really drive on the street on the occasional weekend or a more expensive track car that I'd be happier driving around on the occasional weekend. It's the old brains vs emotion thing if you get me. I was pretty attached to my GT-R, sold it to retain my license and give myself some time to grow up and stop being a knob on the streets. I'm old enough for that now. -

ROFL Gold! Same, I don't like spending more than $10 on a haircut and prefer to get the missus to do it when possible, she won't let me shave it though, prolly coz I have dumbo ears. Roy was it you who put the 32 through the fence at Targa? If it was, did you wish the fronts would engage to pull you around the corner rather than letting you slide through it? Semi serious question...
