  1. Hmmm...so 4A-GZE pistons are a no go? that puts a big dint in my plans...anybody else have any other thoughts on this? or have opinions on any other cheap options are far as pistons are concerned?
  2. The joys of having contacts... Thanks Ash...read all that stuff already...i'll look through again and see what else i've missed... Please keep the info coming...
  3. Good day fellas, The time has come for me to take on a new project...I was recently GIVEN a blown rb20det by a mate i figured it would be a good candidate for a mild rb20 build up...as the title states...it will be a RB21/22... First abit of background info...its going to go into my HCR32 which currently has a reasonably healthy rb20det in it...it also has a hks 2535 and every required support bolt in it needs...at the last dyno session it made 223rwkw at 17psi... I have spent the better part of the day searching and reading up on all relevant threads with any infomation i might need and have learnt a fair deal...the plan here is not to build a bulletproof rb20hybrid engine to rival the rb25 and other bigger cousins...its is more of an experiment i want to do reasonably cheap and if it works out will leave me with a slightly beefier and stronger engine...being a mechanical engineer and a trained auto mechanic...i will try to do what i can by myself to keep costs down as well... I will be looking to use later model 4A-GZE pistons as they are about the right size and are forged and not to mention cheap...this will be a bore out job only and i do not plan to stroke the engine at this stage...i will be re-using as much as i can from the old engine and only changing things that need to be changed...the same turbo setup will be used on the new engine too... As such...i am looking for any advice an opinions from those who have taken a similar path or have done enough research regarding this topic to know what they're on about... I do have a couple of questions to begin with... 1. I understand that there is some work needed to get the 4A-GZE pistons to fit and work correctly in a rb20 block...can someone tell me what exactly needs to be done? 2. Using late model 4A-GZE pistons...what CR would the engine end up having? 3. Where can i find a headgasket with the correct bore size for this build? I'm pretty sure i'll have heaps more questions as this goes along but this will do for now...as mentioned...could anyone who has taken a similar path please post up all the info you can to help me along with this... Lastly...please do not post up saying that its not worth it doing this and that i should go to a rb25/26/30 or whatever combo because that is not the plan at this stage...Cheers all...
  4. You don't need to change the gearbox...it'll fit behind a rb25...whether it'll last...thats a different question...
  5. Good for you mate...enjoy the car... But lets all say it together..."happy dyno"..........
  6. Pics of the oil cooler and relocator kit to [email protected] please...cheers...
  7. My money is on the coilpacks or coilpack connectors/loom...its a common occurance...
  8. Yesterday...while on the way to the SAU VIC dyno day...i put my foot down on the freeway and got a shock when the boost gauge flicked to 1.8bar...car is only tuned to run 1.2ish bar...i turned round...went home and checked everything in the engine bay for anything wrong...nothing...swapped boost gauges...same result...wound the turbotech out substantially...same result too...finally i removed the turbotech and the boost settled back down to about 0.95bar which is correct for the hks actuator on my turbo...hence i'm now wondering whats wrong with the turbotech...has anyone had something similar happen to them?
  9. That was my R32 with the 2535...made 223.4rwkw...turns out my boost gauge was inaccurate and it was only running 17psi...should have been 19-20psi...but i'm happy with the result regardless...in the end...it was a great day...cheers all... Oh...and go the rb20!!
  10. Front or rear? i take that thats -2 degrees camber...if its the front thats fine...if its the rear...say goodbye to the insides of your tyres...
  11. Checked mine...its set to +3 IN and -6 EX...another guy i spoke to runs +2 IN -5 EX...so maybe try a setting around there when you get yours tuned...
  12. This thread is a joke...i'd expect it to go further downhill from here on...and good on you guys for giving this guy flak...
  13. Had the same thing with my car...went from a standard turbo to a HKS 2535 with a slightly larger exhaust housing and immediately the exhaust note changed...went from a creamy idle to a angry growl...
  14. He meant that all cars respond to different cam gear settings differently...even with standard cams...so tuning IS STILL REQUIRED to get some quantitative results...so your mistake there... That said...i've read up alot about these before i had mine done and in general most guys ended up with between +1 to +3 advance on INLET and -2 to -6 retard on EXHAUST...thats a starting range...the rest is up to you...
  15. Bwhahaha....thats the funniest thing i've read all day...so true though...
  16. Tossing up whether i should come down...might be the night to break into the 12s...will think about it...
  17. I was about to send my application in today...but now that this deal is here i'll just sign up on the day itself...makes it alot easier...good job all...
  18. If you have already written off 2 cars prior to this i highly doubt you are a candidate for a 300+rwkw car...
  19. Darn!! I won't be around during the first 2 weeks of May...spewing!!
  20. I quickly scanned thru these pages but didn't see anything at first glance...do you have to register to run the car on the dyno or is it just rock up and wait?
  21. Can anyone here comment on how the proxes4 would compare against the hankook rs2?
  22. Definitely not the JJR ones from just jap...they advertised it as giving +4/-4 degrees of adjustment which is BS...i got them and max i could get out of my car was -2 degrees camber in front...i spoke to just jap and they told me it was an advertising mistake...and that nothing could be done about it...absolute BS...
  23. Lucas pads are highly recommended too as a good daily/entry level track pad...and are rated higher than the useless bendix ultimates...
  24. Alittle knowledge can be a dangerous thing...you seem to know enough about what needs to be done but at the same time there are factors which you are ignoring...and you seem to be chasing your tail in this case...without monitoring afrs and more importantly ignition timing (which the safc can't control anyway)...how are you going to get a decent result? Not to mention that a 2540 on a rb20 when tuned well can push numbers in excess of 240rwkw...with the stock afm and injectors and the afm signal bending safc...its gonna end badly...
  25. Its all about the application...sure its not going to be a suitable setup for track...since apparently thats what you like to see...but for other applications like drag it might actually work really well...and its all about showcasing what you can do with a certain engine/setup...so to call it ridiculous is rather narrowminded...
