  1. Hello! Apologies for the lengthy post. It’s been a long time since posting (or reading) the forums. Good to see the track days are alive and healthy. It looks like everyone is having a great time and benefiting from the opportunity to give these high-performance machines their head in the relative safety of a controlled environment. The Riverina Motor Complex is a proposed driver training and motorsports competition venue for Wagga Wagga in NSW. The aim of the project is to provide a boost to the local economy and to give the region's clubs a track day option that lies halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. The project is coming up against some local resistance and a petition has been circulated to generate support for the project (see the end of this post for the link to the petition). http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/news/ ... 01251.aspx http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/news/ ... 02563.aspx http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/news/ ... 28254.aspx My view, after 6 seasons of inter-club motorsports competition (and at least 1 club record along the way) is, that the opportunity to channel my driving "enthusiasm" (aggression?) through healthy competition (thanks Budge, Adam, Ray, Scott and Chris for some memorable “non racing”!) in a safe, well structured environment, meant that I didn't feel the need to express that same spirit on our public roads. It also meant that I was far more familiar with my own car’s performance envelope, so that in the event of a "situation" I was better equipped to make the right decisions –more quickly. I fail to see how the opportunity to “test and learn” on a track or skidpan could be a bad thing given the rate of road fatalities -particularly amongst young males. When we consider the lack of entertainment options that regional centres often struggle with when mixed with the attendant boredom that results and we add the appeal of an open country road and high speed (not to mention a splash of alcohol) it’s not surprising. I am signing the petition (despite the fact that I may never use the facility) because I have experience of having to regain control of my own car and 2 sons that will eventually become drivers. I hope that this facility is successful and it results in prosperity, enjoyment, improved skills, safer drivers and it saves some lives along the way. Please consider adding your name to the petition. http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/da1 ... entre.html Thank you Tedshred (Roy Cushan)
  2. Not November? What is the date?
  3. Righteo bro' I forgot/didn't realise/didn't know about the decision until just a couple of hours ago when I first looked at the (yet to be updated) results spreadsheet and the mental "no points for Calder" WRX outcome was brought to mind. Now I can go ahead and do the calcs!
  4. When was it decided to count points for round 1 (rainy day at Calder)? I didn't think that was a "points" round due to the events on the day.
  5. I'm interested...again....
  6. I have a Mychron light TG laptimer and wanted to download the stored times, so I purchased -from E-Bay- one AIM (the Mychronlight TG manufacturer) USB downloader module. Once it arrived, I followed the install directions closely (a number of times) and to my disappointment I could not get it to work. Before I go through the whole return rigmaraole, is there anyone who has a working download module in Melbourne, that could be used to test the operation of this one against?
  7. So too, shall I !!!!!! (PM me and I will surely prove my dedication to this worthy cause!)
  8. Thanks Matt. Actually it was a 1:52.8130 in practice. Overall I think it was 3rd fastest for the day. Once the sun came out, my rooted rear tyres couldn't handle the heat and I could only ever get within a few tenths.
  9. Wrong. There were 2 of us. .....but only one skyline....
  10. Cool. Thanks.
  11. Bec, You have only included 7 rounds on the spreadsheet with round 7 being the last round (round 8) of the WRX at Calder in October and missing the Sandown round in August. Is this a typo or is that how the SAU c /ships are to be run?
  12. bump. And I have a link that may work to see the rubber on offer: http://hometime.bounceme.net:8000/pics/
  13. 4 x RE 55 SR 235/45/17 Bridgestone %50 tread $750 PM or call 0425753528
  14. Well, The EVO seemed to hold up OK........again.
  15. Fair enough! Best you have a real car. There's clearly nothing to learn from Karting!!!
  16. I believe Paddy Hopkirk was a Lager Drinking Irishman.
  17. I would recommend Techsport in Bayswater 97209300. Zach is very methodical and fastidious. He has done the alignments on the majority of the fastest track-day skylines in Victoria. He is the only person I would take my car to, or recommend.
  18. Nope I have only been 2 or 3 times, but the Karts there are the closest to proper Karts you can get without owning one (or knowing someone else who has one). I know Frank and Glenn (and Steve) from "the old days" and I knew them as being very methodical and fastidious. Having driven there, I can vouch for the fact that the Karts (at least the ones I drove) were well set up maintained. Get into some competition, I don't believe that you will be disappointed!
  19. The advice to go karting is by far, the best. The "scale" speeds you will do in a proper race Kart ,will normally, far exceed the equivalent speeds you will reach in a car (possibly, unless you're in something highly modified). Your reflexes, vehicle handling, vehicle setup and racecraft skills will be developed rapidly (if you're interested) with the regularity and level of competition. There are a greater of number of tracks within a 100km radius of Melbourne with regular meetings for Karts. To be at the top in Karting, even in Australia much less, globally, your skills will be so honed that motorkhanas and sprint days will be a cakewalk! You will gain -more rapidly- the valuable experience of driving a vehicle at or beyond it's limits. I believe that it can still a very cheap sport particularly when it comes to wheel to wheel racing (as opposed to sprints and motorkhanas) I'd go so far as to say that it is STILL the cheapest wheel to wheel racing you can do. Unless you prefer chequebook racing! At your age you may well start with a "J" motor in karting as your fastest option until you are older. I am not sure what age you are eligible for "S", Rotax & open motors but it might be 16yrs. Silhouette Karts in Somerton have proper "J" karts for hire. Talk to Frank or Glenn Riddell (in Karts for years) about perhaps arranging a drive, to give you a taste of the type of machine you might have. I am sure you wil find them faster than your ability at this early stage, but you will be able to master them. In my experience (and I raced Karts) The thing about "slow" karts (I mean real Karts not fun Karts) is that there is more to learn in driving a slow vehicle -quickly than a fast vehicle -fast. (I am sure that there are plenty out there who would differ on this!) The list of drivers who have come out of racing Karts is well known and lengthy; Russel Ingall, Craig Lowndes,Matt Coleman,John Fawkner, Marcus Ambrose,Cameron McConville,Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, etc. etc. They're top professional drivers because of their experience in Karts (amongst other things). Karts are definately the place to start.
  20. Sunday 05/03/06 (This Sunday)
  21. for those who are keen, this is a fund-raising event for Glaucoma research with a dyno-dynamics rolling-road. Here is some additional info. It costs $50 to enter and is a RWD Dyno There will be trophies on the day There will be plenty of giveaways Start time is 10:00am Be early so not to miss out on a spot on the dyno Approximately 30 to 35 cars will get on (first in best dressed) There is 4, 6, 8 N.A. Classes There is 4, 6, 8 Forced Classes There is a Toughest Rotary Class There is also a biggest power overall trophy. Regards Rob Webb Autobarn Sunbury
  22. A couple of us have been -very briefly- bouncing this idea around; Please bear in mind that this outline is very basic and probably full of holes. But it designed to to try to make the club competition, less about the $$ spent on mods and more about the ability of a driver to get the very best performance out of the car (whatever the mods) and then drive it well. It's far from complete and far from perfect, but it goes something like this; A matrix is decided listing most performance enhancing mods. A score is assigned to each mod (eg semi-comp tyres) and some combos (eg uprated internals AND turbos). Perhaps a power-to-weight ratio "multiplier" could be applied also. The total score is applied to the vehicle in question. At the end of each round your score is assessed based on you list of mods for each round -this would allow for changes -and therfore score adjustments- throughout the season. Each finishing position (normally based on the fastest lap time) in the the final results for each round is assigned a value , (perhaps starting from the slowest vehicle's time and working back). Your vehicle score is applied to this final score to modify your effective finishing position for each round. For those who want recognition for the outright fastest car, perhaps a separate comp can be created for that, eg fastest 3 on the day and most number of fastest laps at season's end. The aim is to provide the best opportunity for drivers to improve their times by adding well chosen and careful mods if they wish, but also to improve their finishing positions by learning to drive their vehicles better with any given state of tune. This may also have the effect of encouraging more members to have a go with their more-or-less stock vehicles. Perhaps there are some who don't participate (but would like to), believing that there is no point in going anywhere near the track unless you spend $ on big mods. Under a system like this they would be rewarded for perhaps being better drivers than some of those who do. Constructive feedback is encouraged.
  23. beer.
