R32 Nostalgia
funkymonkey replied to funkymonkey's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
Yeah probably. When new the GTR was roughly 4.5M Yen, the GTSt was about 2.5M Yen and the GTS-4 split the difference and was 3.5M Yen. They made a lot more of them in the first batch that came out with the GTR (same chassis after all), but halved the production numbers for series 2. Meanwhile for GTRs they produced double the amount after the first release. So sales numbers for the GTS-4's can't have been that shit hot. Yeah Stagea engine did cross my mind. Billet block and header is on my fap list. If I look at this as a multi year plan... Phase 1 - interior upgrade + modern ECU Phase 2 - exterior upgrade + suspension Phase 3 - engine upgrade Main objective right now is to have a car to take the wife and kids on weekend car cruises once in a while to get back into the culture. If I find a nicer car that comes up for sale before Phase 2 I'll probably flip it. -

Bone stock car which is pretty rare these days. One of the things I like about the GTS-4’s is that usually they’re unmolested as they’re slower than a GTR for the older guys and they’re not RWD so the drift kids haven’t slid em around. Usually grandpa spec. you know it’s grandpa spec when it’s got the factory option parking pole Super rare AF lol. I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t buy the DH0 one that came up in November. Ah well. 1 of 2276 made in KH2 instead of 1 of 364 in DH0. actually by the numbers only 17k GTS-4’s made compared to 44k GTRs -

Little rust on the battery tray. Other than that it’s clean. From a non snowy region so I’m a bit reassured -

Not a fan of flocking personally, done it before on race only cars but I’m going for a M Spec vibe for the interior of the 32 eventually. First step is to acquire car and enjoy driving it. Funnily enough my wife has never known me to own a Skyline - she’s only heard my tales of yearning. She’s only ever known me to own Euros so I kinda want to introduce her to that part of my life. My old man used to run around in a turbo Ceffy about 10 years ago, and he just passed away last year… so there’s a sentimental connection with an RB there too. Currently negotiating on a car that has an immaculate dash with no bubble… so we’ll see how that pans out. -

I'm hopeful things are better this time a decade later cos I now have a 3d printer and can make my own fiddly parts including changing up the material so it isn't as weak or brittle. -

Good point. From memory 10 years ago I took it apart to repair the loop on the second cup slot, now it's somewhere in the shelving, gotta hunt for it! -

Lol at the rates these parts are selling for I might have a million sitting in storage. looking specifically for an R32 GTS-4. The poor man’s GTR. I kinda have a soft spot for them and I don’t feel bad modding them. Plus they’re about 1/4th the price of a GTR of the same vintage and kms, but go 80% as fast. There’s heaps of aftermarket GTR bits that bolt on including drop in engine swaps if I decide to go for big power. Altho Andrew probably won’t let me into GTR Festival with one lol -
More or less decided that I need to have an R32 in my life. In the process of finding and importing yet another R32... but in the meantime I figured it'd be good to take stock of all the R32 and Skyline stuff i've got littered around my house and my parents garage from when I first started playing with 32's back in 2001. First visit to my folk's garage saw me find these nuggets: Do-luck floor brace, spare R32 dash that I was going to reupholster at some point tucked in behind it a couple of R32 GTR front quarter panels from a previous GTR and a JUN fibreglass front bumper couple of pov spec headlights and there's a box somewhere next to it that would have the N1 GTR brackets to turn them into the elusive "N1 headlights" factory light up LCD panel (yup - not LED... LCD), fibreglass knockoff Nismo bonnet lip and JUN grille

I've already put together a list of mods that's about 40k worth. what've you got my friend? -

thanks lads, good peer support in convincing me to not buy a GTR. just picked up an R32 GTS4 for twice what I paid for the same car 14 years ago. -
R32 GTR do-luck digital g sensor
funkymonkey replied to weikleenget's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
the switch in an R32 prevents power transfer to the front, most of the time it is in RWD mode. R33's and R34's use a second solenoid to maintain residual pressure in the pump so that the power transfer is faster, hence why you can't just kill it by pulling the fuse or wiring a switch in-line with the fuse. the G sensor's PWM is not the issue, the transfer of power to the front is mostly affected by the speed of the ATTESA pump... hence why in subsequent models they upgraded the pump system. my personal opinion is that upgrading the G Sensor is snake oil and a waste of money. once you turn off the solenoid you have to restart the car to make it active again... which is not something you do in an ordinary driving situation. You'd only flick the switch to do skids, some drifting or warming up tyres for drag or a 2WD dyno. In all those scenarios the speed at which you disable ATTESA is irrelevant. There are cheaper ways to intercept the PWM duty cycle from the sensor so it's not a permanent off till restart, these days you can use an Arduino for IO, about 20 years ago we used $50 circuit boards from JayCar. It's definitely not as exxy as $500+ for a Do-Luck unit. -

98 R34 skyline (GTT) back seat side (quarter) window seals
funkymonkey replied to JC71's topic in Exterior & Interior Styling
different shapes and locations. roofline is different. -
The upcoming movie is set around 1994 and the Japanese ninja character named Nightbird has an alt mode that is an R33 Skyline of some sort (probably GTS25t used in filming judging by the way itdrives in the on set footage, but meant to be a GTR) sporting a custom Pandem/Rocket Bunny wide body kit. I’d expect all the R33 whales to be harpooned over to the US once the movie releases given that they can import them 😁

I was so close to getting this back on Nov. ticked all the boxes and was the rare metallic green. Second guessed myself thinking I should get a GT-R instead. Instant regrets -

funkymonkey replied to funkymonkey's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
I've owned 1 R32 GTS Type X, 1 R32 GTSt, 2 R32 GTRs, 1 R32 GTS4 and 1 R32 GXi (with an SR20DET swap) in the past (plus a bunch of silvias/180sx's, a cefiro and an AE86). I know the pain I'm getting myself into with 80's/90's cars I've got an Audi SQ5 for daily. I want something to tinker on with no specific purpose other than just owning another R32 for nostalgia sake. Great advice. I wish I had a questionable stream of income. -

watching stuff that skid factory do is definitely influencing my want to tinker. I'd love to take all the knowledge i have about the R32, and all the modern stuff that I've got access to now because it's commodity or I've got a little more disposable income compared to 10 years ago, and make my own modern take on a 32. Plus I just clocked 40 years so my mid-life-crisis boner is rock solid. -

leaning towards GTS4 too. I regret selling my 1992 GTS4 about 10 years ago for $8000 😭 -
Going to start looking around for an R32 to tinker on. It's been at least 8 years since I sold my last 32 and I'm starting to feel like an R32 Yoda with no light-sabre. Should I buy a GTR and leave it as it is with a proper refresh, or should I buy a GTSt or GTS4 and pull everything out and restomod it? GTR is getting smashed by american fanboys snapping up even rusted out shitheaps for premiums, while the non GTRs seem to be going relatively cheaper without markups/competition. Non GTRs have sunroofs! I'd love to pull out all the antiquated ECUs and sensors, for lols switch the clunky gearbox to maybe a BMW gearbox with a paddle shift, hell I'd even love to switch to a bullet aluminium block and build the engine up at some point. The more of these "mods I like to try" I think of, the less of an original GTR I want to retain. I've got spare GTR quarter panels, hood, dash, grille, indicators etc accumulated over a decade of owing all flavours of R32s. I've got a daily driver that's fun to drive and really buying an R32 is really just to get back to my youth and tinker, learn and share. I dunno if I'd be satisfied with just leaving something stock. It'd be cool to go on a spirited drive from time to time, but reality is with 2 kids that need baby seats any outing with the family is in the SUV. I can count on one hand the number of times I've driven anywhere on the weekend solo. I don't commute to work due to working from home. Takig the car out will probably be just for cruises, SAU events, the occasional track day.
